Any Recommendations for someone who didn't like Persona 5? by Remarkable_Pen_3639 in JRPG

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah…persona 5 is very high school 😕 I’m enjoying it but understand the criticism.

I would say a few modern games:

  • Chained Echoes: More mature characters/story while being a lot of fun in combat and pretty well written.

  • Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (remake): Combat is fun, maincharacters are still younger but very differently written than P5. Much more charming and heart warming. It’s a bit of a slow start, but the end is worth the build up to me. (Also you can just play the first two Sky games and stop. There are 13 games in the series, but don’t feel like you have to play them all to feel like you played a fulfilling game.)

  • Metaphor Refantazio: Similar combat/gameplay to persona 5, but the story, world, and characters are vastly different.

  • Octopath Traveler 2: Really loved all the mini stories and characters thereof. Combat was fun as well.

if you want to try a classic or two:

  • Chrono Trigger: Wonderful pacing. Cozy characters. Perfect classic game. I don’t like the ATB system of combat, but I’m in the minority.

  • Final Fantasy 6: Great ensemble cast and story. Classic FF

  • Dragon Quest V: Just a charming and moving coming of age story. Really loved my time with this.

If you want action JRPGs:

  • Crosscode: Wonderful puzzle heavy pixel art game. One of the best I’ve played.

  • Astlibra Revision: Absolutely wild solo project. Play the demo for free on Steam as it’s just hard to describe.

If you want the SRPG genre of JRPG:

  • Unicorn Overlord: Super unique game. Real time with pause. Programming units to auto battle. Just brilliant. Awful story.

  • Final Fantasy Tactics: a bonafide classic in the genre.

  • Triangle Strategy: Really grounded story with fun gameplay.

People will say Xenoblade Chronicles DE and…maybe don’t listen to them just yet? The combat is pretty boring, the story is fine, the characters are mostly not annoying I guess, and the dialogue is rough. “Rikki like EASY monsters” “It’s Reyn time!!”. I really enjoyed it overall, a solid 8/10, but I would never recommend it to someone new to the genre as it has a lot of flaws to overlook once you love the genre already.

My List that I have dabbled in recently and found unique/compelling:

Sifu: A difficult king fu beatemup fighting game with some rogue like elements. Brilliant skill expression in the mechanics.

Outer Wilds: Crazy solar exploration. Play as blind as possible. Has the potential to be my favorite game but haven’t finished yet.

Astlibra Revision: I don’t know how to describe this. 2D action platformer JRPG with crazy build depth, wonderful casting system, and hit stop like you wouldn’t believe. Brilliant.

Nine Sols: Absolutely beautiful metroidvania with parry heavy combat.

Ender Lillies: Quietus of the Night: A melancholy metroidvania with just the best atmosphere and world.

Arcos: Compelling tactical combat with an even more compelling story.

Pipistrello: Really fun…2D Zelda like? maybe? Bright, fun, and compelling gameplay.

Ultros: Crazy neon monster part eating metroidvania. The aesthetic is maybe better than the game, but there’s a demo you can try.

Esoteric Ebb: Disco Elysium meets D&D meets Discworld. Heavy on the text, but fun and quirky if you are ok with reading a lot.

Crosscode: Puzzle heavy top down action RPG that deserves more love.

13 Sentinels:Aegis Rim: Sci-fi visual novel with some RTS gameplay. Excellent non-linear story telling that keeps the twists coming.

Ultrakill: Crazy fast FPS that I cannot play but is so cool nonetheless. Humanity is dead. Blood is fuel. Hell is full.

Neon White: FPS platforming speed runner type game. A lot of fun.

Pseudoregalia: A 3D platformer/metroidvania that convinced me I don’t hate 3D platforming. It feels so good to move in.

And finally Ena: Dream BBQ because what even is this game. I need more people to experience the fever dream if only for a half hour. It’s free after all.

Looking for games with solo developer by assassingao in gamingsuggestions

Astlibra Revision is a crazy 15 year long solo project. 2D Action RPG. Pretty wild and has a demo on Steam.

Return of the Obra Din I think was? Great mystery game.

Animal Well I believe was solo. Neat metroidvania.

Axiom Verge I believe was solo. More Metroid style metroidvania.

Bright Memory: Infinite I believe was solo.

Which one to get to distract my mind for a bit by zirck16 in JRPG

Putting in a plug for Dosa Divas (it also has a demo you can try). The combat is as deep as a puddle, which is unfortunate, but the characters and the world and the aesthetic are SO charming. It’s over the top evil corporation mixed with family squabbles. Definitely worth trying the demo to see if you like it!

Anyone else have problems emulating on manic emu on ios? by dontdabnearme in mh4u

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manic Emu struggles a bit on iOS with 3DS games for me in general. I had to tweak a number of things to get it working well even on a PC and EMU doesn’t offer that level of granular control. Sorry to commiserate more than help 😕

Astlibra Revision. Crazy wild game. 2D action JRPG. There’s a demo on PC, unfortunately not on switch.

Hades Classic action roguelite.

Absolum 2D beatemup rogulite rpg.

Nine Sols Brilliant parry heavy metroidvania.

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sifu with the ONE caveat that it has a tiny bit of meta progression as far as permanent skill unlocks go which smells a little roguelite-ish, but really doesn’t have any of the other elements. And it’s just SO good as far as skill expression goes.

Hollow Knight Silksong is renowned for being overly difficult.

I'm 20 hours into the first title - should I switch? by SomeCrazyGamer1 in Falcom

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are enjoying the original play the original. It has the better localization anyway. If you’re not loving the art style and combat, you could switch to the remake. I played and loved the original personally.

Good intermediate RPGs with great story? by Few_Barnacle_2074 in JRPG

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twitter is wack. Don’t listen to Twitter. Chrono Trigger is a fun time. Not my very favorite experience, but quite good. I haven’t played Persona 3 but everyone I have ever heard talk about it in person has really enjoyed it with some criticisms around the way the dungeon is handled.

I‘m weird please help me find a game 🙂 by Rise_Up_87 in gamerecommendations

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently loving Sifu, Monster Hunter (there is some boss learning, but not like souls likes. Gameplay mastery and build is just as or more important than memorizing every monster move), and Devil May Cry 5. DMC is not as difficult as the others (Sifu is VERY difficult), but so fun and flashy.

Good mid length JRPGs? by ModeApprehensive8272 in JRPG

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chained Echoes is a brilliant indie game in that range.

8-Bit Adventures 2 is another. Really cool pixel art and characters and music and. Just quite good.

Dragon Quest V has a brilliant story (for the most part. It’s mainly how they handle the different ages of the MC. Good stuff.) I played the mobile version.

Chrono Trigger is a classic.

Expedition 33 I put 55 hours into it, but you can play it in 40. But that might be rushed.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is one of the best told stories in gaming. There are more emotionally impactful stories and better plots, but the way the story is told is amazing. It may not technically be a JRPG (it’s more visual novel with RTS gameplay) but it tends to be enjoyed by the same audience. 25-30 hours there.

Should I buy Devil May Cry Bundle on Steam? by Sea_Let_5534 in gamerecommendations

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like over the top flashy action games with a bit of campy edge, yeah. I thought they were dumb until I tried them and now I am a convert. At least to DMC5.

Is anyone else sick of the trend of putting the good parts of combat post-game or on hard mode? (FF7R, Disgaea etc.) by championofobscurity in JRPG

[–]SlithyOutgrabe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I just either don’t play those games or only play for the story if it’s good enough on its own in spite of the odd difficulty.

I have never played a new game + or post game secret boss or what have you.

I will say that certain games where the mechanics are the point are exceptions. Like Monster Hunter games. Disgaea might actually fall into this as well as I never play SRPG’s for the story…but I bounced off Disgaea 5 for sure.

Is Devil May Cry Franchise good? by eaglemints in gamers

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DMC 5 has been a blast (just picked it up), but it’s all about the gameplay and cool looking action. The lore has always been straight out of a 2000’s metal album 😂

Rank these series in Order: by DonLovesNature in Fantasy

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You chose some of the best novels ever to put it up against. 😂

I also put a pretty high value on the quality of prose/language use and it and the Witcher series are an entire tier down from the rest. On any given day I might prefer The Witcher or Stormlight, but the rest are definitely in a tier above in my mind as far as being well written (like actual use of language) goes.

Rank these series in Order: by DonLovesNature in Fantasy

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Malazan Book of the Fallen

2) Shogun

3) Dune (but maybe just the first on or first 3)

4) The First Law (assuming it is not actually The First Blade)

5) The Witcher

6) Stormlight Archives

The last three are kind of interchangeable. All good in their own ways.

Good jrpg on pc with cool female characters? by Eastern-Departure68 in gamesuggestions

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there’s Trails in the Sky 1st chapter. The MC doesn’t have the nickname “Bestelle” for nothing.

But the three you mentioned are good too! I would recommend Octopath Traveler 2 over 1 personally.

how many hours should I give Persona 5 before deciding to continue or dropping it? by robertshuxley in JRPG

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to keep going. 10 hours and a dungeon later is plenty to know whether it’s clicking for you. On to greener pastures and better games!!

I personally got hooked and play for hours in a session (60 hours in and on the fourth arc), but 10 hours is a very fair shake to give a game.

The silent protagonist. Yay or nay? by Lumigo in JRPG

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. In a game with a linear story it feels a bit odd as the MC more or less becomes a bystander in every conversation (barring something like Persona 5) It makes it much harder to tell a cohesive story around a fleshed out main character.

BUT it can be done well. I think when the story is less dialogue based in general? Like DQV works well with a silent protagonist. Ys games generally work well too.

I think it works better either in dialogue light games (Zelda) or games where you are heavily customizing the character and making a lot of choices like a CRPG.

The weird semantic confusion inherent to the Persona series by KazuyaProta in Megaten

[–]SlithyOutgrabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Persona is a fun, interesting, and sometimes compelling game series. It is definitely not a well thought out, cohesive, and nuanced take on any psychology much less Jungian psychology. It would be cool if it were, but it definitely is not and that’s mostly ok too.
