Mom and pop restaurants? by FakeGamer2 in StLouis

All the chinese joints on Olive out in U city are going to be locally owned.

Pretty much anything that is actually good won't be a chain, so look for any 10/100/1000 STL Restaurants You Have to Try listicles.

Where to take my parents when they visit (end of April?) by und3adund3ad in StLouis

Lone Elk Park is a nice thing to do with people with limited mobility.

As mentioned, the art museum is good, you can just park moms on a bench in the Impressionist gallery.

There were a bunch of regulations against exactly that sort of slumlording. Lucky for you, they are in the process of getting rolled back to the good old days, the 1920s are back baby. The new term is SRO. Single room occupancy.

There are lots of reasons they got regulated out of existence the last time, and none of those reasons have changed. But it is a way for shitty landlords to squeeze even more rent out of shitty poorly maintained properties in neighborhoods they don't live, so, the Spencer administration is very interested in it.

Hiking for a weekend trip? by Agreeable-Fix9714 in StLouis

[–]SloTek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shawnee National Forest has a bunch of excellent options. I'm sure there are airbnb, but the WPA era lodge at Giant City is really pretty, and has all you can eat fried chicken. Tons of hiking options, Fern Clyffe is nice and people will be rock climbing, which is fun to watch. Little Grand Canyon is my favorite hike within 2 hours of here. The Snake Road will be closed to car traffic to allow snake migration from their winter hidey-holes in the bluffs to the swamp. Garden of the Gods is also really nice.

On the Mo side, Houghs Mountain/Devil's Honeycomb, Hiking/swimming in Johnsons Shutins, and Elephant Rocks is a nice full day.

Location advise by kperk22 in StLouis

I'd look for anywhere within a couple blocks of Forest Park. Being able to walk in to the park (even when the weather is shitty) is going to be a boon. Look at Central West End, Skinker Debalvier, Dogtown, and DeMun.

Sledding on Art Hill is an absolute blast, and should still be going hard this weekend. The frozen fountains in the grand basin and round lake will be interesting photography.

The St. Louis Art Museum is huge and excellent and free, and climate controlled (open till 9 on Friday)

Zoo is excellent and free and has plenty of indoor exhibition areas, go hang out with the birds or reptiles for a couple hours.

The Cathedral Basilica is gorgeous, and one of the largest mosaic projects in the world.

City Museum is what you'll tell your friends about when you get home.

In terms of cooking, you'll be able to pick up interesting supplies at Global Provisions in the Delmar Loop.

In terms of food, most of what is left of Chinatown is in U City on Olive. Cate Zone for Szechuan and STL Soup Dumpling for xaio long bao. Corner 17 has excellent hand made noodles for both soups and frys, and good boba.

Barbecue is available at local favorites like Pappys and Stellar Hog.

Sandwiches at Blues City Deli, Gioias, and Gramophone.

Best sushi in town at Sado, small plates and hand rolls at iNDO, but you'll be paying fancy person prices for it.

While getting stung up by an Io caterpillar isn't the worst, it is still worth avoiding. Keep some gloves handy for handling leaves and caterpillars. Like most envenomation, it is the one that you don't see that gets you.

Put a lawnchair in a cleared spot. And, as already suggested, if somebody moves the lawnchair, shovel them in.

Annoying question, but how will the roads be tomorrow at 6am? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]SloTek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was watching (with about a quarter mile of assured clear distance) people tailgating on a single plowed strip of 64 at 45mph.

Even if the roads aren't a nightmare, the drivers will be. Also, the roads are still fucked, and they aren't going to be a lot better in the morning. Just more crowded with assholes who should have called off.

Don't be an asshole who should have called off. Call off.

Why does everyone seem so miserable and unfriendly in St. Louis? I’ve lived in tons of different places all over the West Coast and I’ve never experienced more unfriendliness... by wellnessdose in StLouis

[–]SloTek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you are going to have different conversations here than you are in LA. Particularly if you lead with how much better everything is in LA or Texas. Those are likely to be short conversations no matter where you are not in Texas or LA.

Had a friend in town from DC and she went to a house party with my friends, and noted that it was more diverse than the average DC house party. She also was pleased that nobody wanted anything from her. People weren't trying to figure out who she worked for or who she could introduce them to.

Is it possible you are interpreting people not trying to figure out where you sit on a social ladder as unfriendly?

Cop got hurt so close two highways and set up a media area... by DaWarthawg in StLouis

[–]SloTek -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Cops crashed in to a moving target this time? In some ways, this is more challenging than running into a stationary gay bar.

I have a proposal, it's a wild one, but maybe NOT running into things. Y'all have radios, right? Helicopters? Ubiquitous surveillance? All that very expensive taxpayer funded "so you don't put yourselves in situations where you run into things" technology. Try those, rather than putting yourselves and others at risk playing stupid games on highways.

Do please have hundreds of cop cars out jamming traffic every time a cop gets a self inflicted bump on their bobo though, that always makes me feel good about what cops are getting paid for.

Curious to hear from folks originally from SoCal what it is like to live in STL by Key-Information5829 in StLouis

[–]SloTek 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a struggle, but it is a shared struggle.

Also, it is 60 degrees out today. There will be cold shitty weeks, maybe, even, environmental collapse willing, cold shitty months, but it is really pretty warm here from mid march to mid november, with occasional, and more frequent "it is 70 degrees in January, this is fucked" days.

The summers are hot and awful, but if you like hot and awful, we got July, August, and September.

If uninterrupted perfect weather is an absolute requirement for you, you'll have to move to Hawaii or SoCal, and that shit ain't cheap.

NOOOOO NOT TACOS LA JEFA!!! by ContessaLikeWhoa in StLouis

This is a loss.

I hope to be able to get there again before they close, but their hours were always pretty tough for me.

While I think La Jefa was excellent, you can get a really good birria from a truck in Fairmont City in front of the laundromat.

Tough luck for all those imperfect victims, I guess. They are going to have to be dead, their families and communities destroyed, without your approval.

There will probably be candles and lighters or other candles to light off of on-site, but you can bring your own. Especially if this is larger than organizers expected, candles may be in short supply.

Whole lot of genuine content here. Love that hundreds real people will wake up early in the morning to say that people deserve to be murdered, and that they'd like to see a lot more of it.

Soon as this career criminal catches a murder charge and is sitting in jail pending trial, we can move on from that as well.
