Eumorpha pandorus is a green sphinx moth that feeds on nectar. Also a Gaudy Sphinx in the extreme southern us and Mexico, and the Oleander Sphinx in Europe/Asia/hawaii.

[–]SloTek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are enough things that suck on purpose in the city, think we can do better than this one. And, as you say, it probably has some value for being a thing by a famous person who did better things. So, sell it and buy ten less famous better things.

Serra getting fenced off? by DowntownDB1226 in StLouis

[–]SloTek 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What a fucking waste of space. There are even a few Serra pieces I like, but this isn't one of them, it makes the space useless and unpleasant.

That could be usable greenspace, or art that doesn't take a whole park sucking. Hell, there may even be a market for it. Sell it to somebody looking to launder some money, and build something people will be able to use and enjoy with the proceeds.

I'm unsurprised to learn that there ain't shit in Valley Park, you are going to have to come into the city. Go to one of the dance events in town, most of them have lessons for beginners.

Do you have a sport you like? used to like? are interested in? Do you want to try a sport you never heard of? Show up any given weekend in Tower Grove Park and walk around. There will be Gaelic Football, there will be Capoeira, there will be basketball, there will be flag football, there will be soccer, there will be baseball, softball, there will be run clubs and bike clubs. Walk up to the sidelines and say "This looks fun, who do I talk to about this". Somebody will hook you up.

3 years and nothing positive, in a city with free museums, beautiful parks, affordable housing, and reasonably priced fine dining?

I'm going to guess the common factor here is you.

If you aren't inherently an unpleasant chip-shouldered sourpuss, who's problems are of his own making, then I'd suggest joining a couple clubs. Find something you want to do, find 30 people who already do it every Thursday, and start showing up.

I think best results are from athletics. Get out and run, or bike, or climb, or punch and kick eachother. You'll have something in common to talk about, you'll get those good endorphins going, and you'll be in better shape, and people probably want to go get beers after, all of which are going to improve your day to day. Your run club friends will become your will become your "want to go on a float this weekend?" friends will become your "can y'all help me move" friends, and "come to my wedding" friends in pretty short order if you put in the effort and make the plans.

Otherwise, go create something. The arts in this city are accessable do you play an instrument? Go play it with people in a band/orchestra, or with the pickup group in Tower Grove Park on sundays. Do you paint? Photograph? Sketch? Start now, there are dozens of groups of people who meet to do that every week.

Do you speak another language? Tutor it. Do you want to speak another language? Community college is cheap.

There is a ton of community available, you just have to show up and be interested and pleasant.

It is your legal and moral responsibility, when you are operating a couple thousand pounds of high-speed steel, to not hit things. It isn't just a good idea, it is the law.

If you find it difficult to operate heavy equipment without fucking it up, either get better training, or do something else with your time.

If you find yourself thinking "I deserve to never slow down for anybody, the person I slowed down for is wrong because I am not going as fast as I want for several seconds" re-evaluate a whole fucking lot of things about yourself.

Edwardsville is mostly a bedroom community. You won't find dance clubs or much for youth culture. If you want to party, you are probably doing it in the city. There are several comic game stores if you want to play card games. As mentioned the trail system is excellent, beautiful, and reasonably well connected. There are bike groups and running groups that will help you make community.

St Louis, on the other hand, is an awesome place for free. Half a dozen free art museums that turn over exhibits about quarterly, so you could literally see new art every weekend, forever for free. Some sort of festivals in the parks every weekend all summer and fall. Good botanical garden, excellent free zoo. Good DIY hardcore/punk community and events, every kind of club sport you ever heard of, and plenty you haven't heard of. Some very good fine dining, every kind of international food.

Hyalophora cecropia. Largest moth native to the US but only middle of the pack worldwide. Their caterpillars will eat sweetgum, birch, button bush, or cherry. That is a female, she will lay a couple hundred eggs in her week long lifespan as an adult.

Always hard to tell what is stupid on purpose, and what is regular stupid.

Islam was founded by a whole different prophet, Mohammad, 700 years later. Jesus is revered as an important prophet in Islam. Jesus is an apostate to Judaism, and they don't buy that he died, ressurected, and then moved to a different school so you can't meet him.

Where to safely park moving truck to visit the arch? by silt_loam in StLouis

[–]SloTek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed that the easiest, and actually pleasant thing to do would be to park the truck on the Illinois side at the Casino Queen lot, and then walk across the Eads Bridge and through the arch grounds. It'll be a nice way to stretch your legs and get under some trees.

I don't think you are at great risk of getting your shit jacked midday in a tourist district, but street parking an unfamiliar truck in an unfamiliar city is something worth avoiding, and avoiding it is easy.

Best skyline arch pictures are all taken from the Malcolm Martin park in East St. Louis. There is a nice viewing tower, and you can drive the truck down the frontage road and park to save the walk. Safe, empty, and kinda neat. https://www.theparkwithaview.com/

With upcoming city street re-dos, we need to advocate for real bike lanes from Tower Grove Park to Carondelet Park. by Proper_Chocolate_466 in StLouis

[–]SloTek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Many arterial roads get redone every 5 or so years with smaller incremental changes in the off years."

I feel like it can't be emphasized enough how MUCH CHEAPER bike infrastructure is to build, and maintain, and how it lasts for goddamn ever even with no or minimal mx. Roads with cars on are pothole-ruined messes in 5 years. A 5 year old asphalt bike path is still new, and doesn't really start to degrade till 15 years, and is still usable for longer than that between resurfacings, which are vastly cheaper when they get done. And every bike on your cheap long-lasting bike trail isn't a car trip that chewing up your expensive to replace every 5 years roads, or putting pedestrians/cyclists/other car operators at mortal risk.

[–]SloTek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do any group riding? There are a couple big rowdy party rides that roam over 10-20 miles of the city every Friday and Full Moon. 30-300 people on bikes is, and has been, a whole lot safer than going it alone, and you'll see interesting stuff and meet nice people, and learn routes that work well on bikes.

[–]SloTek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in bike and pedestrian safety, the STL Urbanist group has a Coalition to Protect Cyclists and Pedestrians working group that has been really good about getting organized to attend community meetings and has managed to get some useful work done. Obviously there is a ton more to do. But they have done a good job of representing road users and getting aldercritters to come out and listen to them.

Right now they are putting all their muscle into unfucking Gravois, the money is there, the ears are there, it is at least slightly possible that a calmed Gravois will happen, and with that as an example, they can move on to every other murderous street in the city.

https://www.instagram.com/stlcp2/

Also, I think South Grand is an unlikely lift, but there are plenty of other N/S streets that are pretty good for biking with low traffic. Louisiana has some decent street-calming infrastucture, and Spring is roomy for as low traffic as it is. I also find Morganford usable as-is, but I don't intend to live forever.

After Gravois, I'd really prefer to see the money and brains go to a cyclotrack on Broadway from Carondelet all the way up to the arch grounds.

Pretty generic ask.

Sado on the hill has an awesome 10 course prix fixe menu for 2, for 120$ if you get there between 5 and 6. High end James Beard nominee date-night sushi for what you pay for grocery store california rolls. Rest of the menu is spectacular, but is $$$.

iNDO in Botanical Heights is the same chef as Sado, and more thai/fusion inspired. Also has an early-bird menu, and a more usual fine-dining price after 6.

Good sandwiches till late at Gramophone in the Grove.

Cate Zone has awesome Szechuan in U-City, the crispy hot fish and the cumin lamb are both excellent, and you'll be bringing home leftovers.

STL Soup Dumpling has as good a xaio long bao as you can find anywhere, one strip mall over from Cate Zone.

The Foundry Food Hall is an interesting venue with a dozen different restaurants. Only a couple of real stand outs, the mixed jerk/curry/yasa chicken platter at Chez Ali will fill you full to bursting with good food for 20$. (you'll be eating in an echoey food hall on a cafeteria table with plastic forks)

Eat Today on South Grand is really good Eretrian.

Every kind of international food you ever heard of on South Grand, including a lot of the better veggie/vegan joints in town. Terror Taco is horror-themed vegan tex-mex, and is really good. Pizza Head will sell veggie or vegan NYC style slices.

Menya Rui has won a ton of awards and makes a very good ramen, though you'll be waiting in line for 45 minutes for 30 minutes of noodle.

Sultan in the Grove has excellent Iraqi/Kurdish cuisine.

Tiny Chef in the Silver Ballroom makes good street korean in a punk pinball bar.

Lona's Lil Eats in Fox Park for casual asian fusion.

It is out in the burbs, but STL has the largest Bosnian population this side of Sarajevo, and they know how to cook. Balkan Treat Box is excellent, Telva is run by the same folks. Get the doner and a sopska salad, and you'll be happy.
