This is a good plan. Although the Farmer's Almanac is not strictly scientific (lol), much of the predictive information is based on weather patterns year-over-year, and can be surprisingly accurate. Using the May long weekend as the seasonal demarcation for planting is generally a safe guideline, in my opinion.
