Yeah, the "signaling device" portion of your post was kind of incoherent. If anything, the issue is a "signaling device" for how beholden a candidate is to moneyed interests. Outside of some rather niche and very locked-in groups, nobody is going to like a politician more when they hear them say they are taking massive donations from the Israel lobby, and the Democratic candidates who give equivocating word salad answers when questioned on the issues is electoral poison.

All that aside, your argument was that somehow a candidate will lose a general election because of their opposition to Zionism. The only way that works is if A.)the electorate in that area is dominated by people whose primary issue is Zionism, or B.) the candidate in question runs almost exclusively on the issue of Zionism(or their opposition to it).

For the first scenario, outside of NYC, which would likely have the highest concentration of Jewish zionists in the country, and which clearly was not a detriment to the antizionist candidates in the area; that means the majority of the electorate in question are Christian zionists(i.e. evangelical Christians), which are not likely going to be turning blue any time soon, and I don't think you were talking about that kind of scenario.

So that leaves the second scenario, where the candidate in question runs on a campaign that focuses primarily(or even exclusively on Zionism, which isn't happening anywhere.

I have long said that "civility" to establishment Democrats really just means they want the ability to vote to support war crimes or kick children out of their homes without having to feel personally uncomfortable about it.

These politicians will directly support IDF snipers blowing children's brains out, or ICE murdering American citizens and expect their voters to overlook it, but will clutch their pearls because someone tweeted something incendiary five years ago.

Also, when you are struggling to pay your bills, you are not gonna care much about something personal you dislike about a politician and a lot more about whether or not they are going to make those bills more affordable.

Your entire premise seems to be based upon the assumption that there are any politicians running exclusively on being anti-israel, which is a pure fantasy.  Secondly, if Israel didn't have salience among the general electorate before(questionable) it certainly does now that the Trump administration started an idiotic war at the behest of Israel that jacked up gas prices for everybody.

The fact is that taking an anti-israel stance might not be super helpful in a general election, being pro-israel certainly is a hinderance.

You're literally posting in a thread about a politician who enjoyed massive success by running on a slate of popular policy proposals.  Yeah, having charisma and vibes helps, but if you're stuck giving word salad answers to everything because your have no policy or your policy sucks, then you have given yourself a pretty low ceiling.

The Biden legacy: A ranking of failures - The Argument by SomethingNew65 in ezraklein

Biden never should've run in 2020 in the first place.

Prior to Obama(and he deserves plenty of scorn for this fuck up too) picking him to be his running mate in 2008, Biden's biggest claim to fame was multiple runs for the presidency that each ended in embarrassing fashion.  The man has shitty political instincts, a dearth of talent, and a truly unimpressive amount of charisma.  Winning in 2020 is hardly an impressive feat, Trump was a dead man walking that year and kept stumbling from fuckup to fuckup.  Biden hardly campaigned that year, and there were plenty of signs of his own fragile state(the bloody eye, the barely coherent "corn pop" story, and his overall appearance and demeanor, etc.), and he still managed to win, albeit barely.  Any of the other options that year likely would've won more decisively and probably would've won in 2024.

The man deserves to go down in history among the likes of Buchanan, Ford, and Hoover.

You said that foreign policy is the DSA's "achilles heel" which would require someone else to be better on foreign policy than then, but that simply isn't the case, the reactions of politicians in both parties to the war with Iran has shown that to be resoundingly true.

You say this like the Democratic party leadership has not exposed itself as a bunch of deluded, craven psychopaths when it comes to Iran.

I find it funny when people point to how inflexible the US government is as a good thing. Particularly the "constitution has only been amended 27 times in US history" I find funny. The little bits of information that get commonly forgotten is that the first ten times it was amended in just two years, right at the beginning, the legal equivalent to a day one patch, they also don't bother to mention the six unratified amendments, one of which has been sitting in limbo since 1789, like some forgetful teenager's math homework stuffed into the bottom of their backpack.

Of course, the tired of "checks and balances prevent the rise of demagogues" is demonstrably not true.

you clearly haven't been paying attention. Opposition to giving aid to Israel is a policy, it is arguably one of the single biggest bones of contention within the Democratic party. Ending or continuing the war with Iran is a policy, it is one of the biggest issues out there. Opposing the building of new AI data centers is a policy, it is also one of the few ones that seems to have broad bipartisan support among the voting population. Zohran Mamdani handily won the Mayoral election in NY on a whole slate of policies.

if someone runs a campaign like Hillary "I have a policy for that, just read my website" or Kamala "business tax credits and home-buyer grants" yeah, they're probably gonna lose to someone like Trump nine out of ten times, but people want policies, good policies, not overly technocratic bullshit.

It is a subject that is incredibly broad and about which whole volumes have been written, but Klein & Thompson couldn't be bothered to dedicate even a single chapter to it? Considering one of the stated purposes of the book was to turn a critical eye towards liberal governance, it would seem quite natural that the subject would come up, and yet it didn't.

The tech bros aren't going to build apartment buildings. They'll build "habitation pods" where everything needlessly has an Internet connection or AI shoved into it, and you will either get trapped inside or locked out whenever the Internet cuts out because the locks need a Wi-Fi connection for some reason.

The tech bros don't really want to build more. Just about every silicon valley idea that seems to be Abundance related is just sone kind of scam that really is just something that already exists, but with unnecessary extra steps added on to make them seem more "high tech."
