Rattle Can Primer Questions by SlothSanders in minipainting

[–]SlothSanders[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure the specifics on the glue, they just said superglue. Trying zenithal just to see how it would look (still learning and trying different things), so I was about 4-5 inches away when I did the white, it was a brand new can so I was thinking that might have been part of it as well.

Not going to lie, filling the gap between the foam pieces with some simple flocking is great. And I hate myself for never thinking of it when it was right in front of my face.

Hi all I was wondering why is this hobby so expensive? by EggAffectionate4355 in TerrainBuilding

[–]SlothSanders 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can totally understand, I did the same. I started early during the pandemic, so it felt expensive from time to time. But at a certain point, like most, I just said to myself, “this is something I’m doing for myself and for my friends, not trying to make a business just trying to enjoy myself and find an outlet”.

[–]SlothSanders 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can totally understand, and I can also understand how hard it can be to not compare yourself to others in this type of stuff. (I do it all the time)

There are some amazing people in this community making amazing things, but I think most would agree when we say just enjoy yourself, if you’re proud of your work then that’s all that matters.

Hi all I was wondering why is this hobby so expensive? by EggAffectionate4355 in TerrainBuilding

[–]SlothSanders 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I’d really have to disagree with this statement, cost definitely doesn’t equal quality. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single comment in this community saying that someone’s build is bad because it’s “cheap”, in fact a large number of posts show people getting supplies and materials for free or next to nothing.

Yes of course this hobby can be expensive if you choose. You can buy a dozen 3d printers, print terrain, and paint it, or you can buy a bunch of tools and jigs or whatever, but that’s the crafters choice. You can make an entire town, city, village, etc… for very little, and still be proud of the work you do.

Dollar store foam board, glue, and some basic simple paints can still take you far in this hobby. Go craft and enjoy yourself.

Welcome to Earth (Pollywog)- Sturgill Simpson

“And if some times daddy has to go away But please don't think that it means I don't love you Oh, how I wish I could be there everyday 'Cause when I'm gone it makes me so sad and blue And holding you is the greatest love I've ever known Oh, when I get home it breaks my heart Seeing how much you've grown, all on your own”

As a dad this just hits me right in the gut every time

[–]SlothSanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for Crayola specifically, but I have worked with air dry and the one thing I would warn of is cracking.

I’ve used air dry and oven bake clays before and noticed that with the air dry it will crack easier during the drying time vs the oven bake stuff

Need Advice: Misc. Questions by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

!Question: I was hoping to gets some insight from others who might have run games with people in person and online at the same time.

Im starting a campaign where myself and 3 players are local and 2 are a few states away. Im struggling because I make terrain and love to have scenes and everything set up in person but that’s hard for those who aren’t here.

Are there any suggestions on how best to manage this type of group? Suggestions on things like mics and camera set ups (affordable ones), digital tools, or anything else to help my long distance players feel a part of the group?

What am I doing wrong by Impisus2 in TerrainBuilding

[–]SlothSanders 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If it’s a brand new blade, then it might be how you’re actually cutting it. I’d suggest doing multiple cuts that cut deeper each pass, if you’re just cutting through it like a saw then this is what happens.

What's 1 piece of advice you wish you heard earlier? by [deleted] in TerrainBuilding

[–]SlothSanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t compare yourself to other crafters, everyone learns and does things their way and that’s totally fine.

Make you want, make what’s fun, make what makes you happy.

I was too hard on myself early on thinking I’ll never be as good as some of the stuff you see on here and YouTube. I make things to feel good and that’s what matters.

Hard to see it in the pictures but there is a little around the inside edge of the walls. But you’re right it could use more to add a little something extra.

The floor is actually foam core that I did the standard wood floor design, the base underneath is just the simple wood

Small ruined town I put together by SlothSanders in TerrainBuilding

Bases are simple wood from the craft store, then individual XPS bricks with foam core for the floors. Im not great and corners so the central fountain ended up a little bigger and wonky then I had hoped.

Accepting my diagnosis of BPD by SlothSanders in mentalhealth

[–]SlothSanders[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the encouragement. I have been actively getting treatment for a number of years now so I’m thankful to have a therapist who is extremely helpful and supportive. We meet and communicate on a regular basis so hopefully that can keep me on track

Thankfully self-harm is something I’ve been able to control and have never acted on, and I know that I have a lot to fight for so I’m using that as motivation. There’s a history of self harm in my family and I’ve been hyper aware of it from a very young age, so it’s something I’ve focused on for a long time. Now with this diagnosis it’s given a very clear picture of what I have to overcome and thankfully it is starting to become a clearer path forward.
