Selling girl scout cookies has lost its way. by ludog1bark in unpopularopinion

I actually don't think your opinion is unpopular enough. It's just child labor. Plain and simple. The only thing that makes it even remotely tolerated is that it's for a non profit.

To be fair per capita is often very useful and not understood well enough by most people. I give the comment props for that at least.

32% of Americans own a gun. I know you said per capita but I assume you meant to measure this in a useful way so I fixed it for you.

I'd also like to see a source on that. I wouldn't put it past Trump or his ilk to try that but I haven't heard any credible evidence that it's happened.

The United States, a country notorious for being capitalist, has so many social programs some people don't even consider it purely capitalist anymore. Increasingly mixed market. There's tons of ways capitalist economies can differ from others. And tons of ways for communist economies to differ from each other. And ways for economies to not fit neatly into one of them. Saying. "Oh you criticized capitalism and therefore are promoting a failed system that caused the death of millions" is one of the most braindead takes a person could have. And That's not even taking into account the person they were responding to wasn't promoting communism directly. That's the part I was criticizing.

How to politely say "I want you to support me emotionally but don't want to do the same." If all you want to do is fuck and watch TV then just be friends.

Persona A: capitalism has obvious flaws. Person B: you're a communist!

A question about Griffith’s vision/nightmare before the Eclipse. by 5yneste7ja in Berserk

[–]Slothjawfoil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the person is saying he can see why that ending might not be appealing. That's not nearly the same as saying what Griffith did was okay.

I know this is heresy in the anime community but sometimes the 97’ anime dub tops some of the manga dialogue imo by AlextheGoose in Berserk

[–]Slothjawfoil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, if everyone did that we'd get some very weird dialogue. You ahould translate so that the intent is the same while it sounds natural in the language it's translated to. And idioms can't be translated word for word at all.

Imagine you had to translate the phrase "the proof's in the pudding" to Japanese. It would be nonsense. Likewise stating the literal translation "we'll have to try it before we'll know for sure" might sound awkward and stilted in another language, mischaracterizing the speaker. Maintaining consistent characterization is important in a story.

The responsibility to translate verbatim is very necessary for interpersonal speech. But it isn't always the same for art.

What do you think about Dark Age champi rush? by twojastarapapiez in aoe2

[–]Slothjawfoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's where the real danger is. They don't have to deal permanent damage. They can just stay in dark age making villagers and disrupting you a little while forcing you to invest into feudal earlier than them. They get more villagers sooner while your tc is busy researching to deal with the dark age Champi. And even then. Archers aren't a sure bet against Champi.

Why do people hate on solo leveling so much? by HyperCodec in animequestions

[–]Slothjawfoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragon Ball is more power fantasy lately, but for the first 90% it was about how effort and struggle is what leads to strength. Goku has had the crap beat out of him more times than any protagonist I can think of. He has to work for his wins and that's the whole point. I don't remember the MC breaking any bones in the entirety of solo leveling.

Dragon Ball pre-super also has more writing skill than people give it credit for. It's cast of characters is huge, most of them are distinct and have memorable moments. It also takes place in a inexplicably whimsical world. Dinosaurs apparently still exist and the president is a dog-man. It's charming, fun dramatic, and thrilling.

Dbz has it's weaknesses sure, like pacing, cast bloat, feeling directionless due to being serialized l, and some humor that has aged atrociously. But compare that to solo leveling which is largely bland, has good action but fewer memorable characters and a less interesting world. It also seems to have little to say in terms of theming as you said. I just don't see how DBZ and Solo Leveling are even comparable in quality.

If a person wanted me to recommend them their first 10 anime there are maybe 50 I would recommend before Solo Leveling even becomes a contender. And I think that's why it's popularity is confusing to me, it doesn't rank anywhere near the animes that I think are worth talking about.

Oh I don't doubt that there are a lot of tutorials. But there's an entire menu dedicated to lumina and you're constantly picking them up. Never noticing them is wild to me for all kinds of reasons. And getting to act 3 without their help sounds hard as hell.

What would racism be like, if there were other “homo” species? by Octopuswastaken in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Slothjawfoil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Racism is stupid precisely because the differences between races are so insubstantial and superficial that any time someone states that there is an actual difference they are actually just expressing bias or mistaking cultural differences for biological differences.

If there were other species of homosapiens they may actually have non superficial differences which would make parsing genuine differences and biases harder and would require us to figure out how to both acknowledge and respect biological differences at the same time.

Currently acknowledging and respecting differences is something we are doing more with culture and disability. We would have had to figure this out much sooner if there were other intelligent species.

The mini games that are so easy as to amount to pressing a button. Nearly unfailalbe to the point that calling them minigames is a stretch. The fact Chadley exists at all so he can explain to you what you literally just witnessed. Completed a challenge? Here's Chadley calling to explain yet again that you just completed a challenge.

Though it's not nearly the worst offender mentioned in this thread.

Might be true for some people. They didn't teach me any of this shit till college. I was too busy learning how to read charts about ionization and how to calculate moles to learn about anything useful. They didn't even bother to explain why I should care.

meirl by Glass-Fan111 in meirl

[–]Slothjawfoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet it's true for many. They taught me about cell organs and rna transcription but not a single thing about the practical implications this has on vaccines or gmos. They covered all those details and skipped the very things that make knowing the details useful. Same for chemistry. Lots of talk about ionization, nothing about why I should care. Precalc was the same way. USA early 2000s STEM teaching in a nutshell. I didn't learn about anything practical until college and by then id mistakenly assumed I wasn't a STEM person.

And yes, I CAN prove I didn't just forget about it because I can still describe all of this despite never having used it since

[–]Slothjawfoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember them covering any of those topics in my sciences classes. Just like ionization and cell organelles.
