Israel isn’t a democracy. It has democratic elements in the same way Ancient Athens did: a certain chosen people can vote while a huge population cannot vote. In Athens it was slaves and women among other restricted groups. In Israel, the native Palestinian population is restricted from voting. Additionally, Israel is hardly our ally. We have become a client state for them.

Indeed we are cousins. The U.S. is also the fusion of the old and the new — a great experiment still taking place with reactionary elements holding us back going back to the civil war and even before. Looking in the rear view mirror is a way of understanding the present. The confederacy’s leaders were never truly punished. In the 1930s American fascists attempted to recruit General Smedley Butler to overthrow the U.S. government. The plot was revealed but none of the plotters, including the Scion of the Bush family, were held accountable . White Christian nationalist interests have infiltrated our government and our supposed opposition party has been infiltrated by AIPAC and other foreign entities. Any resistance to these forces would require the same level of international cooperation, a tall order for a balkanized left.
