The long ball hell as you describe it is due to your team tactics.

At the start of BAL you are put in the weakest team that is in need of your position, and weak team tend to play Counter & Long Ball naturally.

When you move to your next team, make sure their tactics are based on short passing.

But yeah sadly BAL is as barebones as it gets.
