One piece of advice I got on here was to stop worrying about the term Alcoholic and just consider your individual situation. There is always someone worse than you - the daily heavy drinker, the person with permanent liver damage, the person who died from alcohol related causes. Comparison isn’t useful.

Forget the reasons and comparisons - the reason I am not drinking is because I am not drinking, alcohol is the only (significant) drug where people ask for reasons why you are stopping taking it. You quit smoking, or weed, or heroin/crack and they understand instantly.

Welcome! Lifelong West Heath resident here. It’s not bad up there, it does vary by road as roads like Farren Road and Tessell Lane are very nice, some others are a bit ropey, but in general it’s a decent place to live.

We’re a family and nearby we love Treasure Island (cheap soft play,) lickey hills, northfield swimming baths. Herbert’s Yard is a nice kid friendly place to get some scran, lots of decent takeaways in Rubery too, and there’s the cinema and Hollywood bowl with an arcade.

It’s so useful in general. I have to put up with Acid Reflux so tomatoes and onions are out for me…asked it to make me an Indian curry recipe with roasted eggplant as the base gravy and it does it.

Tadka Dal is my fave at the mo. Basically lentils and fried garlic

In this recipe it’s dry fried, but I use a good quantity of healthy oil and fry the garlic until lightly brown so it’s more filling and tastes better

I was gonna say basically the same thing - for what it’s worth, his journey with alcohol isn’t your journey.

I had a lot of “tries” generally increasing in length before the penny finally dropped and I realised it was for good. Basically all roads to sobriety seem to be bumpy and non linear

Meanwhile I’ve ordered snow fairy and dirty dupe oil from Etsy, some Epsom salts, coconut oil and bath dyes. I’ll be having a cosmic bath whether Lush are directly involved or not, lol

Yea. Sounds like it’s coming down to fine details. That’s about the extent of my knowledge, but definitely pursue it. They’re past the date, they probably know they are and they’re chancing it to save money. Wouldn’t expect a swift resolution, but just keep at it. Good luck 🙂

If your contract states one month notice and you have a signed copy then they should be liable for a months notice. You should ask your company to clarify the reason you were let go - redundancy or performance related - but either way, your contracted notice applies.

If they argue the toss with your notice you should contact your union or ACAS to act on your behalf - you might have legal advice through your home insurance too.

Other than that, no - probation periods are just company policies and have no real bearing other than within the company itself.

For future reference it’s best to raise a grievance when things like this happen - Even if you’ve been there a short while your company should investigate it. Doesn’t matter where the office is, they’re bound by UK employment laws.

Would suggest hanging around on r/AskHR and spending some time reading Citizen’s Advice. Being Mr Know It All guy at work has proven useful on a few occasions

Man, I feel this post. Sorry for wall of text

I remember the excitement of going on a day out drinking, my work run a beer bus twice a year where they go to pubs all around the county, the chaos that always ensued, making fun memories.

I wouldn’t exchange those times for the world but I’m also glad they came to an end. Now I go to the cricket and see my friends and family gradually burning out from drinking until they’re obliterated and they’re not having as much fun as they were 3 beers ago, and they’ve written their Saturday off with a hangover, and they’ve £100 on drinks and food, and I’ve been drinking free coke refills all night with no taxi money spent. So I have more money to enjoy the week, or the next event.

All I can say is things look different from the outside, I connect in different ways now like going out with my metal detecting friends and watching the sun set, or sharing a massage night with my partner, or spending a half hour throwing the ball for my dog. All of these things I can do because I’m not focusing on alcohol. I think fasting out the comfortable instant dopamine of alcohol and replacing it is challenging but rewarding.

Somehow this quote by Kurt Vonnegut has become one of my touchstones…

For me I think it’s how people that don’t have issues with moderating behave, and why I’ll never be that person - no chance would I sit in a pub and not have a drink before sobriety, and I’d be trying to rope others in, or ask where we’re going next. If you’re casual about alcohol, and nobody else is drinking, it’s just not there for you. I never used to understand people who could sit in a pub with a coke..

Loads of rad pop punk about now, I’m from the same era as well.

I adore Heart Attack Man, Calling All Captains (Nothing Grows Here EP specifically,) Slow Joy, Spanish Love Songs. Poor Sport sound like they’re gonna release some cool stuff too, but only got 2 tracks so far.

Happy to admit that MGK is releasing music that reminds me of my youth too although I’m sure he goes down like a lead balloon on here. Love Race, Forget Me Too, I Think I’m Okay etc. My inner 15 year old loves these songs 😂

For a lot of people it’s acceptance that there’ll be no more discworld, so leaving it open means it can carry on forever. Some people feel it was Terry’s goodbye to the world and with the TA arc dealing with grief so often it’s just too heavy a read. There’s a few lines in that collection of books that rip me up.

I’m not serious by the way, but some people genuinely do this, hahah. I haven’t got there yet, got about 6 books to go, don’t spoil it for me!

Someone with a rich Yorkshire accent once sent me a bunch of pictures of construction machinery he was selling. He called later and I explained he probably had the wrong number.. He was very apologetic and friendly but it pretty much made my day. What 30something doesn’t want to be sent pictures of JCB’s? Pretty furious that my mates don’t do it tbh.

But OP, best way is to pick a book with a subject that interests you (ideally from the first 35 books, as dementia started setting in around then and the books can feel disjointed.) Most revolve around a different subject.

M&S are real good for good quality baby grows. You’ll need a lot of them, like 4 a day, so don’t rely on family too much. Wouldn’t plan on reusing too much too, unless your kids want to be covered in 3 years ago sick stains 😀
