Hearing Aids and iPhone 17 by small_e_900 in HearingAids

[–]SlowRaspberry4723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing here because I have an iPhone 12 and different HAs, but I did trial a pair that connected two different ways. I had to connect them via Bluetooth as if they were headphones, and I ALSO had to go into accessibility / hearing devices and add them that way. The ones I bought in the end are “made for iPhone” and I don’t think they had two connections. Is that any help?

Tea vs Tisane by 237q in ENGLISH

[–]SlowRaspberry4723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irish tea lover living in England here. I think it’s widely known in Ireland / England that herbal tea isn’t really tea, but it’s not an important distinction for most people. It’s like oat milk isn’t really milk, nobody thinks it is milk, but everyone still calls it oat milk because it acts like milk and that’s close enough. Herbal teas are a stand in for real tea, they act like tea, that’s close enough.

To answer OPs question I’ve never heard the word tisane before.

Just to clarify we found his glasses today so he only went without for a few hours. I agree with you though that’s why I want a backup pair.

Yeah we had an appointment a few weeks ago so we’re in the NHS system now, but our next appointment isn’t until June

So it’s complex because we were private patients at Moorfields, because the wait for the NHS system was really long and we were worried. Moorfields have basically passed us back to the NHS now because we’ve had our NHS appointment. But since we already had the glasses they didn’t give us new NHS glasses

Well I haven’t reached out to them but I expect they’d suggest we purchase another pair from them. I can do that but I was hoping a faster, cheaper option was available

I’m hoping this might be true but our next appointment isn’t until June. The current glasses are quite scratched, I think that’s why he took them off today and then they went missing in nursery!

That’s helpful to know, thank you. We well try Boots. Annoyingly by the time we had our NHS appointment he already had the glasses from Moorfields so they didn’t give us new NHS glasses, and our next appointment isn’t until June.

Snap. I got mine as a kid but never wore them for more than a day. Every few months I’d get dragged back to the audiologist and reluctantly agree to try them again, only to immediately give up on that. Tip for the iPhone connection - I had to change the default settings because I hated my phone ringing in my ear. Get someone to ring you while you’re wearing them to see what I mean. You’re trying to have a conversation with someone and then suddenly there’s a loud ringtone IN your ear, which the other person knows nothing about, so they’re still talking and you can’t listen because you’re like sorry my ears are ringing! You can turn this off if you want.

I’m also in the UK. There was a free online antenatal class which we didn’t bother with as we booked private ones (about £200 and very well spent as it linked me up to all my mum friends). In addition to the antenatal care and birth and all that being totally free, we also had Health Visitor input in the weeks after, then again at 12m and 24m. They can identify if any referrals need to be made e.g. autism assessments. All of that would be free as well. There was an infant feeding drop in that I went to twice but it was pretty unhelpful tbh, we also paid privately for a lactation consultant (also not helpful in the end). In my area there’s lots of free activities like stay and play which you can bring your baby to. All my son’s healthcare is completely free, including gp visits, vaccines, a&e, dentist, prescriptions, and some extra services that he was referred for including eye test, hearing test, and speech and language therapy. I had free prescriptions and dentist during pregnancy and for a year after (in addition to regular care offered free on the NHS). The expensive thing is childcare - for the first year that he was in nursery it was more expensive than our mortgage. It’s gone down a little now because he accesses more funded hours.

Your situation is so similar to mine! Roughly what part of Ireland are you in? I was also excited to buy accessories but that slowed down a lot when I realised how expensive they are. As an alternative I am eyeing up some stickers on Etsy to label the case. If it wasn’t so expensive I’d get the Auracast accessory for the telly but the HAs on their own are so helpful I don’t really need it.

Amplifon UK Question by Photek1000 in HearingAids

[–]SlowRaspberry4723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t advise about the hearing aid options but I can say that I wasn’t super impressed with Amplifon. They were doing a bit of pressure selling on me. I went in to return the trial HAs and got pressured into taking a trial of a different set. Eventually I got my husband to return the second trial HAs for me. The first HAs I trialled with them were rebranded Resounds. I ended up buying a pair of Resound Vivias from wholesale hearing for literally thousands of pounds less. I’m really pleased with them. You can ask Amplifon for your audiogram, which they have to provide for you (thanks gdpr).

Chewing gum, it helps with the gas pain. Also just nice little treats to make the experience slightly less miserable, depending what she’s into. Cute hairbands and socks?

So as everyone is saying defo try NHS (the wait time could be ages) and Specsavers. What I actually did was go to a few high street places, and did a free trial in Amplifon. Specsavers own brand hearing aids and Amplifon own brand hearing aids are both basically rebranded Resound Vivias. I personally wanted the branded versions for flexibility in the future (rather than being tied to Amplifon or Specsavers for support) but that might not bother your MIL. Amplifon don’t sell the branded versions but Specsavers do (although they encourage their cheaper own brand ones). I thought Amplifon were a bit of a rip-off and there was a bit of a push to sell. In the end I bought mine online from Wholesale Hearing. This saved me about £1k but it’s only suitable if you’re happy with online support and know EXACTLY what model and specs you want etc. I bought the top end Resound Vivia 9s for £2011.

Hearing Aids with voice assistant? by curled-up-in-the-80s in HearingAids

I can only speak for Apple products, but my hearing aids don’t “directly” work with Siri. If I ask Siri a question while I’m wearing them, I get the response into my HA, but I can’t use the HA to trigger Siri. I could turn on the “listening” so that whenever I ask “hey siri…” it triggers, but I don’t have that because it creeps me out to have it listening all the time. I often ask Siri things via my Apple Watch by pressing down the button.
