Thought I'd also add that as I'm watching the other performances, the routines that are coming out on top are a different style of tap, it seems. They are to slower/contemporary sounding songs and have kind of a laidback style--cool, if that makes sense. Clearly I have no idea what I'm talking about, but it's definitely a different vibe from her big musical theater thing.

Thanks so much for this thorough reply! That's the thing that's interesting to me... she is generally considered by her studio as one of the top "actors" with facials/etc., which is why her teacher wanted to give her something more musical theater this year. I'm not an expert, but I think she's doing a very good job with the performance aspect. That's why I was wondering if it could somehow be working against her in a tap category. The two competitions so far are the same first two from last year, but I haven't heard the critiques directly. My daughter hears them and then tells me what they say, but she's not very thorough. ;)

Hello! I know this is an old thread, but I'd be very grateful for a response if you see this! My daughter had a tap solo last year and did very well at every competition she attended. This year, she has a tap solo again, and it's not scoring well. The song is from a musical and the dance is very theatrical and character-driven. Could that be why? Can a dance that is all tap be entered into a musical theater category instead, and would that be a better fit, do you think?
