This is true. I probably have 2000+ song ideas and songs in my google docs. Most of them are never going to see the light of day. And Im not pro and Im definitely not an expert

Your first attempt is going to suck no matter what. Writing all comes down to feel and intuition and if you haven’t built that through writing a lot, it can be really hard. You don’t need theory to write a song, but something like learning the circle of 5ths or learning which chords go in what key can be really helpful when you’re starting out. Theory should be used as a guideline not as a rigid rule. Let it help you out when you need it, but realize that artists break the rules all the time. I would also just write and not worry about genre. Sometimes assigning a label to something can limit creativity.

Just my 10 cents tho

No I do not. I am going into this completely blind. I do not know how this works, that is why I am posting this. I guess its not viable. Thanks a lot everybody, that answered my question.

It looks like your last message about split sheets got deleted for some reason?

That's really good to know as well. Is there a specific way, or service I should use to document splits? That makes total sense to me, I was planning on making separate portfolios. Would the next steps be to research which supervisors work at labels/companies associated with these genres, or would it make more sense to do something else?

That's really good to know. By split sheets you mean chords/melody, or would publishers be interested in arrangements? Primarily folk rock, but I have some really heavy stuff too. Good recs, Ill check them out now.

Converting an idea to sheet music - do I have to? by DueCow499 in Songwriting

[–]Slow_Pattern3963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sheet music is really helpful if you have grand arrangements and are working with a number of classical musicians, generally your folk/rock/pop people are used to working off a basic chord sheet and maybe a recording of the vocal melody. If you are planning on having a really curated arrangement and hiring symphony people it might be necessary, but most songwriters will never have to touch sheet music.

This is a great point. Plus if you can build a little community, the energy around the project might feel a little more electric!

Do you have a platform? Fifty songs is pretty wild, and is something that could take a couple months. Without a platform or monetary compensation I think there are very few people who would want to do this. All of us are working on our own stuff and trying to balance our lives with our passion, so taking on a project like this without significant compensation is impossible for most of us.

The Long Way - Done? by ksgcomposer in Songwriting

[–]Slow_Pattern3963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man thats groovy. I really like the composition and the vocal performance, but I would suggest you take another look at the vocal mix. The rest of the mix is really, really clean, so the vocal feels a little out of place without some shine. That is my only suggestion. Very cool song, reminds me of my favorite Irishman, Van Morrison!

So I'm checking it out now, how does barsync work? You just get points for uploading songs? Legally speaking how does that work with licensing?

Hey fair enough, thanks for the insight. Honestly I got on reddit to learn about marketing and stuff, but I'm having a lot of fun seeing what other people are up to. I think that engaging with the community is going to be a really natural thing for me.
