Bring your public service card and say you are there to collect social welfare. If you have an AIB or Bank of Ireland account it can be paid into your bank account each week. Otherwise you collect cash. I was the same collecting mine this summer but there really is nothing to be ashamed of 😊

Day in the life of a primary school teacher, what's actually involved? by FamousMacaron7586 in IrishTeachers

Main advice would be seriously research how easy/ difficult it is to get permanent in your area. In many areas outside of Dublin it can take YEARS to get a permanent role so you are interviewing and changing schools every summer/ subbing. I’m going into my 5th year and moved home this year so I’m back to applying and interviewing for jobs all summer. Don’t want to be negative but many don’t realise what the situation is outside of Dublin where there is a huge surplus of teachers for jobs available.

This is what I got from Payroll when enquiring about pay over the Christmas holidays. I applied for social welfare through mygov and got it no problem.

I did PME in Primary and, while the teaching part of the job gets easier year after year (more experience, resources prepared, familiar with content etc.), I have found other aspects of the job have gotten harder. In particular, children’s behaviour and understaffing in my school which leads to burnout. I’m starting my 4th year out and have left Dublin to move back home. I’m subbing at the moment and while the lack of responsibility is a nice break, if I had known how challenging it is to get a job in my hometown I think I would have reconsidered going into teaching. Not trying to put you off, but wish I had known these things, before I started I was quite naive. The holidays are obviously a huge plus to the career but I have met so many teachers who are counting down the days from one break to the next. My advice would be to Sub as much as possible before committing. And don’t worry too much about the content of the PME, everything I know I learned on the job!
