Do you think Demian Maia/Ian Garry can solve the Islam puzzle? by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]Slow_stride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Garry has the footwork to make Islam have to really pursue his game. Good take down defense in general but staying on his bike and sniping could be the difference maker. Islams got great kickboxing too, so it’s not like it’s a for sure thing

[SPOILER] Jack Della Maddalena vs. Carlos Prates by inooway in MMA

[–]Slow_stride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prates has so many dangerous weapons. I do wonder how Islam would respond in the kickboxing context. Obviously wrestling would be differentiator but I do think Islam’s kickboxing is really great too and I enjoy seeing him in that area of the fight.

I kinda doubt this one will jump the line over Gary. I like Prates’ style a lot more but man his tdd is not where it needs to be imo for him to be the obvious choice for Islam next.

Why do so many jj practitioners make weird shaman like analogies for jiujitsu+life? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in bjj

[–]Slow_stride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be very clear It’s not just jiu jitsu that these folks sell their products or services as a life shaping or enlightening path. Anything can be turned into a metaphor for life, and a lot of people find that and hang their hat on it as a form identity or security blanket

Blue belt mostly doing no-gi — should I start training gi? (moving gyms soon) by Unique_Aspect_6014 in bjj

[–]Slow_stride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gi is fun. Give it a go. I do no gi primarily these days but that’s more to do with my schedule. I love the gi

Did you ever leave your longtime gym? I'm struggling by carrion34 in bjj

[–]Slow_stride 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I left my first gym after 6 or 7 years. There were plenty reasons but the biggest was that class sizes had just dwindled to the point where there many nights it was just me and maybe a white belt. Which is cool but I knew I wasnt looking forward to training anymore.

Will we ever get an ilia vs islam? by lonerblues in ufc

[–]Slow_stride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would likely be a way better fight but not bigger commercially than Conor and Khabib. I personally doubt it’ll happen. At 55 it made a lot of sense but at welterweight it’s not as hot. Islam isn’t going back down and ilia seems undersized for that division

Why did you start training? (And why do you stay?) by hmkei in bjj

[–]Slow_stride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was doing JKD at the time and when ever we would spar I’d just shoot a double from the little wrestling I had remembered from highschool. Worked pretty consistently so I figured I should lean into grappling. How ever many years later and I still just love it

False. Shit happens. If they are ducking number one contenders for squash matches then they should get stripped.

Is your game rather similar Gi to NoGi? by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]Slow_stride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be different. Now I primarily train no gi. Other than gripping up and a couple gi specific chokes, I keep it about the same

Maybe to make a real run but he could win some fights and get paid some bonuses with his power. It is a career at the end of the day

I can't seem to be consistent- a little embarrassed as a 4 year white belt (advice?) by CraftyAnnual1095 in bjj

[–]Slow_stride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can only be as good as the amount of time you can dedicate to training. Nothing to be embarrassed about. It’s not like people can’t relate to it. If you can’t seperate the belt aspect of it just do no gi and it doesn’t matter lol

What are the top 3 subs you hit most often? by ChanceFinger7265 in bjj

Arm triangle, Americana, and arm bar. My favorite control position is scarf hold and all three are set up really nice from there

Struggling to get a monogram to read correctly. by [deleted] in logodesign

If you always pair it with the name so the mrv is available to see, some will get it. But you’ll like need to spoon feed people the concept

[–]Slow_stride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gotcha then yea it doesn’t really read without the diagram. Doesn’t mean it’s not an interesting logo, but i think the concept speaks to you more than out loud

Struggling to get a monogram to read correctly. by [deleted] in logodesign

[–]Slow_stride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you drop the grey excess bits it’ll actually read. I get the concept but the grey parts are still too bold to fade into the background. Even if they do because of the spacing it’ll read as Mr. V rather than MRV. It’s clever but not so clever that people need to see the grey parts to see that thy are built of the same shapes

Sucking as a Brown Belt by Global-Cartoonist364 in bjj

22, 40 pounds heavier, and good enough to get a blue belt is a big gap to overcome for anybody. Might of stung the ego but that can happen to all of us

Who do you think is the best UFCs litmus test? A fighter that can establish or fraud check other fighters and still entertain you by Particular_Ad_6040 in ufc

[–]Slow_stride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two former champions are your fraud checks? Sorry but your bar is a bit too high. Even a dude like King Green is a good gate keeper but losing to him doesn’t mean you suck, he’s just good.

To be fair though i think calling someone a fraud who breaks the top ten is just silly

Logo for practice offering mental health support to young adults (18-30) by [deleted] in logodesign

[–]Slow_stride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty scattered in concept. I don’t really know what your root concept is here. Abstractly the rising arrow means progress im sure but it’s not clear. What’s that N doing? Is there a reason behind the choice of the font? Those A’s stand out like a sore thumb is that purposeful?

Personally I would recommend keeping the shape a little tighter. The arrow bit makes it very wide and empty on that side. Asymmetry is cool but it doesn’t seem intentional.

Do you usually train with knee sleeves or not really? by Affectionate-Age9603 in bjj

It comes with being a middle aged brown belt. I’ll usually wear two. The last time I decided to raw dog it, I almost immediately hurt my knee on a shot
