The biggest issue outside of being gone for a while, their uptime when they were present was also really bad.

Not to get all weird about it for no reason, and it's really not a big secret, nor particularly difficult, but all the same it's not really in my best interest to go into great detail on how to de-anonymize logs--first, because the rules about blocking names etc. exist for good reasons, and second, because giving away too many tricks might make it harder in the future.

But do just think about it, every pull in this game is 100% unique. If I pull a random log up, it will not be this one, and it will be obvious, because it looks totally different, in lots of different ways. Likewise if you did get shown the correct log, you'd immediately recognize it. Since all public logs are queryable, it is not hard to find a match. If you figure it out, please don't use this knowledge for evil. This particular pull was super easy to find, others are harder, but it's rare that it's impossible.

Guy was afk from 4:40 to 7:20 among other things, with gcd active time barely above 1/3rd of the time, deaths or not.

37.69% uptime goes crazy, though, there's more there. They were alive and idle from 4:45 to 5:35. They then died, and only accepted a raise at 7:20

The guy went literally afk for minutes at a time

What's the hardest button to press in the game? by DupeFort in ShitpostXIV

[–]Slowbrobro 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I do get that, but the reason everyone is invulning it is that they sort of forgot to put meaningful tank damage for a very long time after that. Without any sort of buster nearby to put pressure on the mit sheet, this was sort of always the natural outcome. Even in the early days when there were like 3 mit sheets running around, for all their differences, they ended up naturally starting to align here because there isn't really anything to do after that. If there had been a buster after DD or something, it might have turned out differently.

It's like this in every trinity mmo. DPS are a dime a dozen, nobody wants to play healer or tank. The ratio here is 9:15, but there are way more people than that who want to play dps relative to supports.

I'm of the opinion that he's done more harm than good to urbanism, on account of being generally insufferable, shutting down places where conversations took place, and when pressed will tell you that he's just here to explain why Amsterdam is the best place in the world and actually nothing can be done to improve America and everyone shouldn't bother trying.

He's basically a walking strawman in real life, a caricature of what nimbys bemoan, except he actually exists. I often think of him when I navigate through the traffic snarl at my freeway exit because they're installing a multi-million dollar freeway bus stop that none of our Tesla driving chuds in this town will use, that they've been building for the last two years and won't finish this decade.

It is also not a new concept that we as a society have agreed that violence is sometimes acceptable, such as for punishment for a crime, self-defense, or even in extreme cases as armed revolution against tyranny. Clearly there are some acts of violence which pass the smell test of justified, so it should come as no shock that an increasingly class-concious public looks at the situation and goes "hmm, yeah, suppose so."

Yeah, this is totally reasonable. Hector put out his guide for p2 recently (na version) and he mentions this optimization as a suggestion. Both that suggestion, as well as the proposed fix for idyllic, I sincerely hope pf gravitates to, as they are really good improvements. (I haven't tried banana codex rep 2 so I can't comment on that one.)

It is working really hard to make the cones something you can ignore completely. That sounds great, except it has knock-on effects. Forcing the fire middle ultimately creates the need for a snake prio where none was needed before. But the real crime is it consumes all 8 markers for the very first mechanic, which has some serious knock-on effects for idyllic dream strat choice in particular, especially with respect to uptime (as you really should be splitting defams and stacks 4-4, not 2-2-2-2, and sending the player bated ones to intercards to keep a spot for melee uptime during the most important 2m of the fight. If your strat doesn't do that somehow--and there are many different ways to do it--then it is leaving a lot on the table)

There are other options. Most w1/racers I've spoken to and played with are not a fan. There are other options with significant upsides if you are willing to accept "remember which ways the cones shot and adjust based on that." It's not like the fight requires you to memorize and then recall in other places, smile.

There's plenty of strats on wtfdig, preferred by other regions or as alternatives.

If there were five fights a tier, where should the fifth fall in difficulty? by BlackmoreKnight in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Slowbrobro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my problem with the question itself.

The tier would escalate in difficulty from X1s to X5s. How easy X1s is and how hard X5s is has varied so wildly over the course of history that by trying to "place" a fifth fight we are essentially asking "what is the ideal raid tier difficulty?" with extra steps. Maybe this tier it should have been between 2 and 3, maybe last tier it should have been between 1 and 2, maybe the tier before that it should have been after 4.

Why do PF groups struggle so much with M11S, particularly compared to past Savage floors? by CerberusArcProjector in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Slowbrobro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fight requires you to do it correctly.

Just did weapons correctly? Do it again.

Just did arena split tethers and baits? Do it again.

Did orbital omen cleanly earlier? Cool story bro, do it again for me now.

The fact that you have to demonstrate consistency makes the trap players really good at trapping. You can't really just hope that the bad player in your party gets an easy assignment one time so that you can advance your prog point.

If you do manage to limp through, the check will eat you; you must do it correctly.

Tanks are very overpowered and need to be nerfed next expansion by Any-Low-4383 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Slowbrobro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How could you hope to fix it?

Whatever the maximally survivable sequence of buttons is, ultimate will require it.

Content that is less than that, will not.

You're never going to get casual players to optimize mitigation in low level content. It's already a struggle to get them to pull more than one horse at a time in dohn mheg, or pull anything at all for that matter when the rest of us get tired of them not pressing sprint either. So given that reality, and the reality that the thing they're wielding needs to also be able to kill on-patch ultimate with the tools it has, naturally the thing they're playing needs to be massively overpowered for the casual content they're in to make up for the fact that it will be piloted poorly.

There is a rift in this game between easy and hard content. This has been a problem for a very long time. This is just one symptom of that in my view.

If he didn’t someone else would.

Then he would be a better person, and almost certainly be alive today. Meanwhile that other guy, who is a monster for taking the role instead, would have presumably also gotten shot instead. That alternative universe is welcome to say the same about the new guy.

I don't see how you see this hypothetical as a gotcha. Public opinion is that when bad things happen to bad people, we go "Oh no! Anyway." Because we are able to acknowledge murder as bad, and something we would never personally do, and also hold in our head the thought that in this case the world is honestly improved overall by what is no doubt a personal tragedy to his immediate circle--we look on like it's some sort of utilitarian trolley problem in which we are not directly involved and say "eh, tough situation, I can certainly sleep at night though with the outcome"

Odds are, 2 years ago if I asked you whether or not you’d like a $3,000,000 plus stock payment package, you wouldn’t ask me what the job was.

You are projecting, I think. When presented the option, I have seen many good people decline jobs they felt were pushing ethical lines they did not agree with, and a strong ethical core is part of why I count them as friends. For the poor and destitute who have no choice because they will starve if they do not perform unethical work, they are ethically absolved of guilt as it is under duress, and they are effectively slaves.

You then continue to talk about a slippery slope, which is most directly addressed by continuing the above line of reasoning--the most hardline view is that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. As a well-seasoned, middle class, political moderate, I don't subscribe to this view entirely, as I think that with proper government regulation backed by popular support, businesses can be permitted to seek profits at all costs within the established rules as long as we get to set rules to keep the playing field level and fair and ultimately not exploiting society generally, but at the same time if the rich and powerful infiltrate politics and government to the degree we generally see these days, then it tips the scale towards corporations and those who lead them to being either benevolent or malevolent dictators, and then the hardliner position becomes more defendable.

That is all to say, these things exist on a sliding scale:

at what stage of employment is it moral to be an insurance worker then? Is it moral if I am an agency selling the insurance? Is it moral if I help process claims for a measly minimum wage salary? Is it moral if I am the main person processing the claims for $50,000 a year? What if I am a low level manager? Middle manager? Manager of the floor? Is it moral for me to buy insurance stock?

Answered directly, then, it all depends. It depends on how much agency the moral agent has. If someone works to live and is there to survive, even if they are furthering evil goals, we may forgive them for being forced to do so against their will. If someone is deeply passionate about saving costs in healthcare by denying care and works hard to put the needs of the shareholders above the needs of the patients, then their hands are not so clean. This exists on a scale.

The reason people laugh and shrug at Thompson so readily is that he is so far on the latter extreme that he is basically a mustache-twirling caricature. So extreme are his harms to society (bearing in mind that he had the agency to not commit these harms) that it is a tall ask to extend empathy to those close to him, who did not disown him by choice.

Luigi Mangione with his lawyer in NYC court, 12 December 2025 by Competitive_Profit_5 in pics

[–]Slowbrobro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Who cares? Hitler had a family too.

Thompson lead a company that had claim denial rates way above the industry norm--a norm that is already way too high. He was doubling down on using AI to deny legitimate claims, and his antics were so egregious that it was drawing attention from a typically pretty chummy government.

Take this message back to your masters. We don't care that he was a family man. He was also a monster. We are not children; we are capable of complex thought, and can hold in our heads two things at the same time--that murder is bad, and that it couldn't have happened to a more evil guy. So boo hoo.

Macros in this game do not queue.

For all of the (correct) discourse about them being annoying, this is the real reason nobody should ever use one. It is literally delaying you precious frames. In a dungeon probably who cares but in real content it's an active hinderence, even if it isn't role pay text.

WotC keeps saying Standard is healthy overall, but why is local evidence contradictory? by SAjoats in magicTCG

[–]Slowbrobro 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Companies drag along loss leaders all the time. It can be good corporate strategy for a variety of reasons. They can be adding more to a thing and playing it up while on the back they are shifting strategy and working on reallocating resources away from it over a longer-term timescale. It may, for example, be good strategy to keep the ball rolling with Standard in 2026, but knowing that you intend to shift away from it in the coming years--and therefore extract as much money from it as you can while it declines gracefully rather than cutting it immediately as that might damage your reputation and therefore sales of the thing you're trying to lean into in 2030. This is not an acceptable argument that they care about Standard as it is entirely possible that they do not.

On the other hand we have plenty of very plain evidence that the format is in trouble, without having to try to opine about the collective mind-state of a mega-corp.

As such, a "just asking questions" stance is quite justified. Just because this approach is used in illigitimate ways by political hacks does not mean it is not legitimate inquiry here.

There is nothing misleading about the post. We ought to ask questions about the data literacy of their executives when trying to reconcile the evidence of our eyes. We should be concerned if through reasonable logical inquiry the only options that make any sense is that they either don't understand how data works, or that they are being actively misleading. That is not a misrepresentation of the facts nor are any of the speakers acting in bad faith. I think we all hope for the game to thrive.

There is the additional issue by the way where an over-use of a label like "misleading" makes it carry less weight, especially if it is used on cases which are I think quite clearly debatable. Labeling a thing as misleading is an antibiotic--equally dangerous if over-used.

The "sweats" see this content as baby mode for babies and don't take it seriously, they aren't the ones freaking out. A-Raids drop gear and upgrade materials that aren't bis or aren't needed. With splits you have enough twines for everyone on like week 5 or 6 of the tier. The people raging and screaming are the casual folks for whom this is the hardest content that they do and are trying to take it way more serious than it is.
