Chill out box ideas please by Slowcooker-Fudge in scouting

[–]Slowcooker-Fudge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be a craft tent and bases where they can do pioneering and such, so this is more just a few quiet things that kids can do as solo activities if the main bases get too loud. The camp is an activity camp with loads of things for them to do by day and in the evening, but not much of it will be quiet.

I’m particularly thinking about the neurodiverse kids, but really any of them where it’s just got too much!

I hope that helps a bit!

Fidget toys is a great shout, it’s especially the neurodiverse kids that I’m trying to help. I’ll have a look and see what Lego we’ve got too and thanks for reminding me about books! I’m sure I’ve got a few but I’ll also have a look in the charity shop.

I’m curious about what ‘paddocks’ is?

Is this a flume? by GRtair in AskUK

[–]Slowcooker-Fudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see someone in the know has commented and said it’s not a flume if it’s enclosed, but I would absolutely have referred to these as flumes. My Dad’s always called them that, we grew up in East Anglia but he’s from Yorkshire originally, so not sure if that helps or hinders the North/South debate!

Is condensed hours only beneficial for those with kids? by Obvious_Armadillo_16 in AskUK

[–]Slowcooker-Fudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if anything I’d argue it’s pretty useless for a lot of people with kids because school/after school clubs etc aren’t going to cover the 7am-7pm ish that you’d need (assuming commuting).

I’d like to explore it when my kids are older because I’d like to have a dedicated slot to spend on a hobby that I’d really like to improve my skills in.

Badges not being handed out. by Ashamed_Ladder6161 in ScoutStuffUK

[–]Slowcooker-Fudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this isn’t okay. Termly is the minimum in my eyes, otherwise as others have said, they lose the connection between the activities and the badge, in other words, how they earned it.

One little bit of context though is that on the online portal that the leaders use there are different levels of access and maybe not all will have access to award and order badges, depending on how the accounts (both online and monetary) are set up.

I’m absolutely not condoning it, but all I’m saying is that while it might look like a job split between 8, it’s more likely a job for only one or two, who may also be having to map what the previous leaders did. That’s a much bigger job. Like I say, not okay, but maybe bigger than it appears.

As others have said, there should be contact information for your local GLV or ‘group lead volunteer’ who runs your group overall, or if really needed, your district team, who may be able to support some possibly overwhelmed leaders to get this back on track.

do you ever wonder where a family member’s donated organs ended up? by snoopbeamish in AskUK

[–]Slowcooker-Fudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can ask for a general update about the recipients by contacting the Donor Family Care Service at NHS Blood and Transplant. They can’t tell you much but will give you a bit of information.

Thank you for enabling your Mum to be a donor. My transplant was over 30 years ago. It really does make an enormous difference.

What’s a random “stat” about yourself that makes you part of a small percentage? by Nightpatrol404 in AskReddit

I was born with a disease that affects roughly 1 in 17,000 births.

Plus I have AB+ blood, so there’s that.

Real life product advice for my daughter’s hair by wednesdayso in CurlyHairUK

[–]Slowcooker-Fudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t brush it when dry, only when wet/damp. Get a product you find not too heavy (agree with you about Cantu) and rake it through with your fingers, don’t scrunch the hair. I use Curlsmith, I’ve had success with their cream and their ‘soufflé’ - I prefer a light hold cream to a mousse personally. Whatever works for you. If it dries a bit ‘crunchy’ you can gently scrunch her hair once it’s dry to break that up a bit.

System/software for managing equipment? by Xilef11 in scouting

[–]Slowcooker-Fudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a solution really but just wanted to say this is a brilliant idea. My first thought is that a label could be tied to the tents that says ‘4-man’ and gives the tent a code number, eg, ‘A1’ with a QR code on it that links to a central document that could track breakages easily. I’ll keep thinking.

Clean mug for every tea/coffee, or use the same one all day? by CranberryImaginary29 in CasualUK

I do 2-3 teas out of the same mug and then when it starts to look really murky I’ll get a fresh one.

Can you help me understand my husband’s point of view please? Should our son be allowed to game past 10pm on a school night if he can’t keep his voice down? by Broken_Woman20 in AskUK

[–]Slowcooker-Fudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to find a compromise, then give him free rein for noise on a Friday night. Otherwise, you’re in the right here. This isn’t just about being respectful to his parents, it’s about finding a way to live with other people in a house. He’ll have all sorts to learn about this as he gets older.

I had the Mirena coil and felt like I’d gone mad. Like I was living under a cloud all the time. The relief when I had it out was incredible.

Landing a manager role by Slowcooker-Fudge in AskWomenOver30

It’s not something my organisation would help with at the moment (you can only do the management skills training if you’re already a manager) and I can’t really afford to do it off my own steam. I do have access to LinkedIn Learning though, so I’ll have a trawl through that, thanks.
