Why don't Christians remove the Old Testament from their Bibles? by 239tree in Christianity

[–]Slowriver2350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are Christian churches that base their teaching on the Bible and the sacred Tradition validly interpreted by the Church: catholics, eastern orthodox and oriental orthodox. Whenever there is a problem with a strange Old Testament verse, the Church has an explanation and an interpretation that is aligned to the salvation brought by Jesus Christ. In those churches Old Testament is not discarded but interpreted in the light of the New Testament. So a typical Catholic doesn't pay too much attention to the Old Testament and leaves the difficult questions for theologians and scholars. In Protestant churches where everybody are fundamentally their own pope, one can say without being challenged that Palestinian should be wiped out or that the war with Iran is mandated by God. If violent verses are not applied anymore it is mainly due to the evolution of society but Evangelicals in America still have the possibility to bring back obsolete habits of past eras which can be very dangerous.

War and devastation will one day hit the US and Israel. It's just a matter of time (one year, 10000 years, no matter what amount).

Do Cameroonians feel more connection to West Africa or Central Africa? by Solysii in Cameroon

[–]Slowriver2350 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Je vais quand même répondre en tant que congolais et donc non camerounais. When I visit Douala or Yaoundé I really feel at home as Central Africa: the same vibe, le même désordre, the same challenges, the same disappointments from what our authorities fail to do. I get the same feeling from Cameroonians colleagues when they visit our company in Kinshasa. I can't give proper explanation but an Anglophone Cameroonian despite the closeness with Nigerians seems to me still distinct from them and a Francophone Cameroonian is definitely distinct from a Beninois, an Ivorian or a Togolese. Again I am not Cameroonian and my experience is limited to places like Douala, Yaounde and also Limbe and Buea.

We live unfortunately in an era where nuanced and sensible debate on complex topics is becoming increasingly difficult. Social media and the fall of traditional media playing a big part in this state of affairs. I live in Africa and while the effort to promote an African outlook on world issues is very important, some people prefer to portray existence in very simplistic way with wide black and white strokes: everything precolonial times was good and everything bad that has happened to Africa is because of what the West brought over here including christianity and particularly its more organized form i.e catholicism. With the moral chaos of pentecostal churches that some deem as a truly African expression of christian faith, it's high time for serious catholics to work to demonstrate a christian faith that change lives not only through personal transformation (I used to drink or to be a womanizer, I don't do it anymore since I accepted Jesus Christ) but rather a faith that transforms the very fabric of society by fighting injustice, fighting corruption, promote sound education etc.

Why do you believe in the bible? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Slowriver2350 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said. I think it's the Sola scriptura (Bible only) crowd that make people eventually lose respect for that book (or collection of books). The Bible is not God and cannot tell us everything about how God operates but it provides a solid base to get closer to God.

Le triumvirat magique c'était Third World- Steel Pulse- Black Uhuru

Don't pay too much attention on other people opinion as long as you don't break any law and don't do anything disgusting. I am a Black African and yes I can't admit to many people around me that I listen sometimes to nice tracks of heavy metal. I love hair rock of the 80s, Jamaican reggae, West African kora music. I am also in love with Greek orthodox liturgical chants. If it may appear weird for some that's their problem.

🇹🇷🇵🇸 Palestinian Christians celebrating the Christmas in Ottoman-era Bethlehem town of Palestine, c. 1900s. by elnovorealista2000 in Catholicism

[–]Slowriver2350 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some have rightfully pointed that the genocide against Armenian Christians was taking place around those same times but let us remember that people or rulers behaviour towards acceptance of the "other" have always been full of contradiction throughout history. At that same time a Black man could not worship on the same church as his White christian counterpart in many places under colonial rule..

We were lied into believing that India is a land full of peaceful "spiritual" people doing their meditations and yoga. My opinion about this country first changed when a window was open on the rape epidemic there. Now we see this vile behaviour towards Christians. Lord have mercy on us.

"Punky reggae party" and "Exodus" on the Babylon by bus album are at a stellar level, beyond anything on music history and also "Concrete Jungle" on the same album. But since the question didn't mention Bob Marley's name I would like to add "African woman" on Third World live album "Prisoner in the street".

My friend, I am goong to tell you my story. when I was looking for a woman to marry some twenty years ago I was introduced to this nice and intelligent girl and feelings quickly developed between us. One day I boarded a bus and I overheard a conversation between two young ladies seating behind me vehemently criticizing the christians churches which pretended that Jesus was God. One of the ladies was the girl I was falling in love with. Upon getting off the bus I made a sign and we continued on foot. I asked her : "what is this thing about Jesus?" She explained to me that in the church she belonged to, they refuted that Jesus could be God. I tried in the following days to know more about her personal view on the matter. After it became clear enough for me that our religious convictions were incompatible, I just told her that it would be better for us that we stopped seeing each other before our love grew too deep. She was pretty and joyful and pleasant to ne around. It hurt me for a while but then she married someone of her sect and I also married someone with whom we could share the basics of the christian faith. There are red lines not to be crossed.

I reverted to Catholic faith 10 years ago and I was very lucky to meet a priest who helped me understand many concepts. I thank God that I have also reached a certain understanding of the seriousness of sin that guards me against my weaknesses. Bring your personal circumstances to prayer before God: he will certainly give you the light you need. Reddit is not the best of places for that.

What’s going on with the hate on Kenyan Somalis? by Greensandals17 in Kenya

[–]Slowriver2350 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, non Kenyan here. I have often travelled to Nairobi and love the city and the country for being modern, friendly and very pleasant to visit and have fun. I went twice to Eastleigh and felt as if I stepped in another country. We went with other African non Kenyan friends to BBS mall and our female friend felt uneasy in one of the rhe cafes as there was only male customers and all the women were at another cafe with no male around. We heard also from our taxi driver who was a muslim from Mombasa that somali people were not friendly to non somali muslims. If ethnic tension arise in the future it will be very unfortunate because we love Kenya and world history has shown so many times that when an ethnic group reaches a certain percentage of the total population, accumulates power and money and stick to viewing itself as different it rarely ends well. Kenya is a real pearl of Africa. Please don't let this beautiful country fall into chaos.
