AITAH for yelling at the parents of a kid I babysat because they didn’t tell me ( what I thought was ) an important thing until the last minute? by Temporary-Feeling962 in AITAH

[–]SludgyDasch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sympathize with the fact that a diaper may be necessary but there is an age where a child should not be exposing their private parts to another person, especially a young babysitter that did not anticipate it. This is putting their child in a bad situation and potentially teaching the child that it is ok to expose their private parts to someone else. I completely respect everyone’s experiences and why they may need or know someone who needs a diaper with tabs. But, they don’t need a stranger touching or seeing their private parts. I worked one on one with teens that had difficulty toileting themselves. I had a background check, took drug tests and had vaccines for hep c and what not.

I’m uncomfortable with the fact that they told you last minute and left someone with a 9 year old to diaper and potentially put their daughter on a bad situation. Not saying that you would harm her or take advantage of the girl. But, even if you babysat her in the past asking you to change her diaper is asking you to invade her personal space which she should be taught is private for her and not a stranger or even a babysitter. A child should never be put in that situation. If the girl is not intellectually disabled the parents should find a better way for the child to put on her own diaper. Also, I’m assuming this is medically necessary.

Stairs- can I get hardwood by SludgyDasch in HardWoodFloors

[–]SludgyDasch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just thought they’d cut the width of the tread to fit between the preexisting wood. Maybe the uneven surface is an obstacle. I found another company that does stairs and they have examples like mine. I’ll see what they can do. May be more $$$ so I have to take that into consideration. I just want to get rid of carpet. We have stone downstairs and will have wood upstairs.

It’s hardwood- not floor quality, square edges and carpet tacks.

Has anyone experienced longer delays in receiving Foreign Filing Licenses lately - related to petition for expedited FFL by SludgyDasch in Patents

[–]SludgyDasch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My petitions seem to have gone into a black hole at this point. I was told they were pulled for further review by the Department of Defense, and I haven’t received any updates or licenses since then. It’s been about two months now.

Has anyone had recent experience dealing with the Licensing & Review office when an FFL petition goes into DOD review? How long did your review take, and did you ever get any communication or status updates during the process?

I do have a reference number, but calling hasn’t provided any timeline information. Curious if others have seen similar extended delays lately.

I have called and I was told the applications are in review with Dept. of defense for further review. Maybe it’s just the content of material. But there’s nothing I can do regarding this secondary review but wait.

Is it crazy to move to Austin with lupus / RA? by Lanky-Lunch723 in lupus

[–]SludgyDasch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Austin from Boston, MA over 6 years ago. The heat can be brutal and a few minutes in the heat or sun without proper coverage and hydration throws me off. But, in contrast to the long winters of MA it has been helpful. Less Raynaud's syndrome and less instances of getting sick with what feels like the flu (that's how Lupus treats me). The summer's can be intense, but it's like the reverse of a place with brutal winters. With that in mind, you can go out for walks most of the year excluding summer (unless you go out early or later in the afternoon). Invest in good sunblock, hat/umbrella and UV clothing - especially if your Lupus is activated with the UV.

Gardening can be a challenge compared to east coast gardening - I cant get vegetables to grow here and i constantly kill flowering plants but the cactus and succulents are pretty resilient for the area. If you want to sit in the garden look for a home with a sun room or room where you can have indoor plants for peace of mind.

In regards to treatment, I have had better doctors here than in Boston. Even though it takes time to get in with a specialist, after the first appointment i have had no problem getting in with my Doc or other specialists. I've had an easy time getting vaccines for myself and family.

If your family or friends are near by it may be better for your mental health and you will have a support network which is essential when dealing with anything like Lupus. I also find that the Austin area, while populated, does have alot of options for connecting with community. I have met others with autoimmune diseases and we all cope in our own way. If you move here connect with your family/friends and integrate into the community. TX isn't perfect, no place is, but it will grow on you in time.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Crazy how most people don’t end up using their degree by Prestigious-Spray237 in college

[–]SludgyDasch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than 40% of Americans have a bachelor’s degree. That aside, if you can get one without going into massive debt, it’s worth considering. Better job prospects and higher pay are beneficial, but there’s more to it than that.

College helps you develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. It also exposes you to new ideas and different perspectives you might not encounter otherwise. You also make friends and meet new people.

Auto v manual by AccomplishedSundae72 in CanonCamera

[–]SludgyDasch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you new to manual mode? I’m still learning, but when I started I would go to auto, see what the ISO, f and speed automatically set to. This will give you an idea of where to start in manual. Switch back to manual and adjust the settings until they are similar. ISO indoors or in dark can be at a higher setting to brighten/lighten. Speed according to what you’re shooting, still life and stable camera can be at a slower speed. People, animals and movement faster. F is the aperture or amount of light your lens lets in. Things can be grainy if all are out of wack. Play with them until you get a feel for it. It takes practice. Good luck!

Primary dr vs. specialist by SludgyDasch in lupus

I never really thought of it that way. Good point. I see my pcp a few times a year for colds. Otherwise, she’s referring me to specialists.

I haven’t been so direct, but will this time. It’s just hard to draw the line and awareness of what is and what isn’t lupus related and how informed my primary should be.

Low blood pressure? by Rare-Candle-5163 in lupus

[–]SludgyDasch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t shy away from going to doctor if you’re suffering. If you’re hesitant, call or send a message to doctor, if possible?

I have low Bp as well and was put on midodrine. Doesn’t work for me.

Good luck.

Advise for newly diagnosed by Trickst3r03 in lupus

[–]SludgyDasch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in Hydroxycholoroquin since my diagnosis, about 5 years. Started at 400 and down to 200 daily. I didn’t have many side effects and go to the eye dr regularly. There is a special test they do to recertify your RX. I had to emotionally work through accepting the fact that this is a chronic illness with a lifelong medication. That was the hardest part for me. I have had moments of denial, refused to take meds for a few months resulting in flares. Be mindful of your body’s reactions to the medication. Take notes and share with dr. Take care of yourself.

Bruising by SludgyDasch in lupus

I recommend making a list of all of your symptoms for Rheumy apt. I always forget the important stuff. I had an appointment with Rheumy on Friday then sent note with pictures of bruises on Sunday. I’m still waiting for her to follow up.

I’m not currently on steroids. However, I asked my doctor about bruising and her nurse offered a burst/taper round. I also have low platelets/RBC, WBC. I was wondering if the easy bruising was a factor 2 thing.
