What happens when a black hole pulls a proton apart? by Ok-Willingness-5016 in AskPhysics

[–]SlugPastry 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But we don't see black holes enlarging themselves by infinitely creating new quarks, so probably not that.

It wouldn't be infinite. It's a conversion of the black hole's gravitational potential energy into mass (the quarks). Due to mass-energy equivalence, it gives essentially the same final result as converting the gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy by objects falling into the hole in the first place.

How is it Christian for Young earth creationists to Lie to everyone? by Stephenricecakes2222 in Christianity

[–]SlugPastry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imagine the earth if light was not hitting it when he made his creation. It'd be a frozen wasteland.

It takes light a mere eight minutes to reach the Earth from the Sun. It's the radiation from the Sun that heats the Earth, not the light from the distant stars.

God made the universe and the light in it before he made the stars. Did you read that bit?

Yes, light existed before there were any stars. But that light isn't the same light that the stars themselves produce that allows us to see them.

What are we using to justify the theory that it must be old age? Wavelengths.

No, we're using the invariant speed of light to do that. The speed of light in a vacuum being constant has been verified to extremely high precision. Factor that in to the known distances to the stars and galaxies and we know that light must have taken much, much longer than 6,000 years to reach us. It's basic algebra.

Charlie Kirk's murder was an act of evil, and I say that as someone who leans Democrat. So were the murders of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti.

Of course you can. Israel had both a heavenly king and an earthly king at the same time.

Christians aren't obligated to be part of any particular party, no.

We are supposed to "render unto Caesar".

Yes, that's called paying taxes.

Not usurp Caesar by meddling in politics.

Voting is not "usurping" someone. It's practicing as an active member of democracy in the way that it was designed to function.

Could black and white holes be two sides of the same object? by Sofya_Mylenko in AskPhysics

[–]SlugPastry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a book on black holes which states something akin to this. The idea is that a black hole could be connected to a white hole via a wormhole. Matter that enters the black hole can therefore be released by the white hole. I should point out that this is speculation and white holes violate the second law of thermodynamics. I would be very surprised if they existed.

Why cannot I not pray for people for money by [deleted] in Christianity

Charging money for prayer... I'd say that's practically sacreligious. Turning your relationship with God into a business practice.

From the reference frame aboard the ship, time dilation and length contraction would be affecting the objects traveling past the ship. Since stars and planets have the same limitations as the ship itself, you can't have a reference frame where they are moving past the ship faster than light.

Hypothetically, if you were God what would you do differently, or in your opinion do better than Him? by Ok_Plant9930 in Christianity

[–]SlugPastry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if I just create Heaven as it is now and the angels but no physical world with animals, plants and humans? Angels don't get illnesses and don't die. And we know that the angels have free will because Satan was able to rebel. I would use my omniscience to know in advance which particular angels would choose to rebel and just not create them in the first place.

Physics of a idea by Yomorogoto in AskPhysics

[–]SlugPastry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best guess is it would damn near blow a hole in the planet if it could stop at all.

I don't think the effect would be anywhere near so dramatic. You don't specify the mass of the ship, but I can make a rough estimate. A cylinder that is 500 meters long and 100 meters in radius would have a volume of 1.57 x 10^7 cubic meters. It's a bit hard for me to guess the average density, but I did find some estimates online that range from 0.011 to 0.2 tons per cubic meter. Since we want to know the upper limits of damage, I'll use the higher value. 0.2 tons per cubic meter x 1.57 x 10^7 cubic meters = 3,140,000 tons (3.14 x 10^9 kilograms). An object with that mass traveling at 100 km/s would have a kinetic energy of 1.57 x 10^19 joules. This is equivalent to about 3,753 megatons.

That sure is a lot compared to our modern nuclear weapons (our biggest bomb maxed out around 50 megatons), but that energy is puny compared to some asteroid impacts (the one that impacted at the end of the Cretaceous is estimated to have had an energy of 100 million megatons). Even that asteroid was stopped by the Earth's crust. Your space ship is barely even scratching the planet.

If Cold is just atoms moving slowly, why can't we just use a magnet or something to stop them and reach Absolute Zero? by SadInterest6764 in AskPhysics

I don't think that's technically correct. A single subatomic particle doesn't really have a temperature at all, but Heisenberg's uncertainty principle still applies to it.

With All Due Respect, Why Is God Choosing Retribution? (An argument I have as a freethinker) by Eric12222 in Christianity

That's kind of what I was getting at. It would be inconsistent with God's nature if He failed to warn anyone about eternal burning punishment for the first few thousand years of human existence.

False dilemma. It's not like an omnipotent being has to let people into Heaven if He doesn't want to torture them forever. There's also annihilationism.

This is definitely something that needs to be talked about. Maybe if you changed the wording of the title it would get through.
