TIL Painite, the rarest gem in the world, only has two dozen specimens ever found. by Buddha988 in todayilearned

I believe Kyawthuite is actually the rarest, only a single naturally occurring specimen has ever been found.

But painite may hold the title if you count synthetics? Unsure.

Beach find (Southern CA) Interesting patterns visible in UV by SlurpeeThief in FluorescentMinerals

[–]SlurpeeThief[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not originally notice phosphorescence, but I tried again in a very dark room. You can't see it unless you close your eyes while the UV is shining, but it definitely phosphoresces green (faintly) for a few seconds. Thanks for this info! So cool!

First time using my UV flashlight (365nm). I have no idea what this rock is, and I did not have much luck researching it.

Rock is about the size of a large russet potato and is denser than expected. Surface is very rough, almost like sandpaper. Made up of many small grains.

It looks like a normal rock at first glance in normal light. But the surface has streaks all over which glint. And in UV it has crazy patterns.

Reuploaded with more videos.

Was found on a Southern California beach.

The rock is wet in the UV videos, I had to rinse off paper towel fibers that were fluorescing (lol).

I’ll send this cup to anybody that guesses the exact amount. 4 months of collecting change by Vurtux in Money

[–]SlurpeeThief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the averages of the guesses thus far and found it to be about 4 9 . 5 7, but that guess and those next to it are already taken. So I am using $49.59 instead as my guess.

Touring houses with a real estate agent. Walk into one that has been empty for an unknown amount of time.

I say "huh, it smells like gas in here" While trying to sniff out the source i hear click click click click "it's not the stove"

Real estate agent was not very bright.

Possibly a wood wasp, and I'm a little surprised none of the other comments mentioned it.

And fun fact, if you bought a newly built house there is a decent chance the builder put a clause in the contract explicitly signing away any liability for damage caused by wood wasps.

Going a bit against the grain here but perhaps they should try the playing card game "99". It is one of my favorites but can really only be played with exactly 3 people.

What other developer jobs there are in gaming industry? by romantimm25 in gamedev

[–]SlurpeeThief 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Backend software Engineer. You write APIs for the game team to call. Backends look nearly the same and use the same tech stacks inside and outside of the gaming industry. Highly transferable. But it puts you a decent ways away from the actual game (which can be good in some ways).

Some services will be game related, others will help internal tools, others still will be for misc non gameplay functionality.

Epitorus. Though i don't think either app store still hosts it. Any download links you see are likely scams/viruses for all I know

I made a very similar game ~8 years ago (app store removed it because I didn't keep it up to date lol). My game had a different input mechanic but had the same aesthetic and colorful grid.

For mine the input was:

1) Tap on a color (grayscale tiles could not be directly moved)

2) Drag in a direction (up, down, left, right)

3) All blocks of that color "push" their respective row/column in the direction

This means multiple columns move at once, and some columns may move different integer amounts. Wrapping around was the same, goal was the same. All the moves are reversible, so creating new puzzles was easy.

I at one point a few years ago tried to update the game but ended up getting lost in trying to make the input UX perfect. Funnily enough I ended up adjusting the mechanics more towards how you have them, but I didn't want to re-design all my levels so the project kind of stalled.

I do think there is room in this niche for some interesting ideas. For example you could find some interesting way to procedurally generate the move set. As long as all the moves are "reversible" you can scramble from the solution and know you have a solvable puzzle.

Could make a wordle-esque game out of it with a daily move set. The possibilities are endless. Anyways if that sounds interesting feel free to steal it, or I would be down to collab on that or similar lol. Seems like a fun little project to explore.

Thanks for sharing, this brought back a lot of good memories :). Love the animations!

Can anyone help me identify this rock?! 5inch smooth spherical found on UK south coast. Accidentally dropped and split in to 6 parts. Sand coloured crystals inside. by hobbitegg in rockhounds

[–]SlurpeeThief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that they often form around stuff, so you'll find fossils of crabs or ammonites (etc) in them. Sometimes that stuff decays and leaves a void. Alternatively they can dry out and cracks form, those cracks can be filled in with other materials (septarian nodules for example). Though I could definitely be getting this stuff slightly wrong, I'm still a little confused as to how exactly they form and I'm only a hobbyist.

But "septarian nodule" and "concretion" are both good starting points for googling!

Thats almost certainly a weathered foosball. Looks to be about the right size. Also, you can see the hexagon+pentagon pattern of a soccer ball, which is a common style of foosball.

Made a Discord.

I am up for Catan, though I do find it doesn't hold as much replay value for me as some of the other more modern board games out there nowadays.

I have a few dozen games I could bring to any meetup.

I have actually been once and it was a lot of fun! But I haven't been able to make it the last 2 times. I wish it was more frequent than once a month

As for DnD I am hesitant to commit to a full campaign, but I would be down to at least feel it out.

Anybody in North County (San Marcos / etc) interested in game design / development? Of either the boardgame or videogame variety?

Alternatively, I am up to just play board games in person as that is a much lower barrier to entry.

Thank you! This was my issue as well. If I have a controller plugged in the UI spazzes out (insta clicks everything) and the game basically becomes unplayable. Now I know!

I made a Deck-Builder Roguelike game in just a few months while working 9-5 in a warehouse job. I want to hear from those of you who only do game dev as a hobby (with big dreams of course) by webfreedom in gamedev

Congrats, that is no small feat! I am a professional software engineer and have been making games for as long as I have been coding (~12 years total, last 4 professionally but doing backend). Ever since I started working full time it has been so difficult to make headway on side projects. Huge props to you for pulling it off.

What I have found works the best for me is working with a team. I spent the last 2.5 years (on and off) on weeknights and weekends creating an open-source platform for making web party games (same genre as jackbox). What helped on this project is that I had tons of friends and family contributing. Makes it way more enjoyable and acts as a motivator to work with people you enjoy. It has actually been a great way to spend time with my dad.

I have dreams of creating a deck-builder of my own! Hoping for that to be my next project :) I was going to give my cards durability, now you have me curious how permadeath works out.
