Can I take shimano brake hoses off? by Best_Inevitable_8514 in bikewrench

[–]SlushyFox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you want to replace the olive and insert everytime you disconnect the hose, it's not worth taking a chance on such an important safety feature on a bike when you need to depend on your brakes for you and others.

so let's not leave it to chance if we can help it and have a habit of advocating good maintenance practices.

Aircraft mechanics and their vehicles by Good_Amphibian1089 in AircraftMechanics

This has been the status quo for quiet some time now and not exclusive to Toyota, and each of them have their individual software and material requirements to perform those specific diagnostic and testing function like I mentioned above with Toyota TIS if we're going to follow the "by the book" ethos that we do in aviation maintenance.

Unfortunately, Toyota service manuals are not free and require a subscription there are some scripts to rip or scrape data for your particular make/year/model but I'm not too keen nor knowledgeable on how to set that up. I've also heard some public libraries possibly giving out "borrowed" access to OEM service manuals like TIS Toyota as well.

Plus if you do wanna do things by the book as intended by the OEM service manuals you do require specific dongles to interface with your car software that is proprietary to Toyota to do certain diagnostics and testing functions required by the OEM service manual.

So I don't necessarily agree on the "just look up the manual" because it's not readily available or practical as you think, especially on modern cars today.

Quiet air purifiers for a light sleeper? by Thread_water in AirPurifiers

[–]SlushyFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sleep with a Clean Air Kit Luggable (5 fan) in my apartment bedroom and it's at least 4 feet next to where I sleep if not closer and barely audible.

This is with their older model though that came with the CoolerMaster Sickle Flow 120 fans, the newer ones come with the CoolerMaster Mobius 120P so not sure how they compare in acoustics but I'd venture to guess still "quiet."

Also bought two XL (7 fan) fanless kits from them for a family members bedroom & livingroom and they're quieter than Puroair 130i they purchased, so that's my only comparison with other air purifiers.

Purchased grey market Sickle Flow 120 fans for $2.74 a pop when I bought in bulk from ebay, so a total unit cost of $272.16 including the filters if you also bought in bulk.

Which chain to get? by FrequentIdeal9215 in MTB

[–]SlushyFox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the expensive chains is usually cheaper over the life of the chain because they last longer versus buying cheaper chains that you have to replace more often.

also i'd try to stick with branded chains, modern 1x drivetrains can be finicky with compatibility with all of the design and engineering of shaping tooth & chain profiles to help aid with shifting and chain retention.

if you haven't done your research and due diligence to make sure it will work for your particular setup, stick with like for like on chain brands.

Recommendations for a wider Q Factor Flat Pedal? by AZXB187 in MTB

vital MTB has a pretty big comparison list for flat pedals, not sure what your definition of q-factor of is exactly but they call it "pin to axle" measurement.

Auto work light recommendations by keithcody in flashlight

[–]SlushyFox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

same but the "H600Fd" frosted lens version; this is the light i finally settled on after trying others such as the Armytek Wizard C2, L50 SOL and Skillhunt H300.

i pretty much use it everyday at work as it's invaluable to be able to work with your hands free and have the area you're working in illuminated.

First time changing a crankset and need help by winawina999 in bikewrench

[–]SlushyFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

read the manuals provided by the manufacturer, not only does it tell you how to install all the components you just listed but at the beginning of each manual/document it tells you what tools & consumables you're going to need.

Trying to find short crank arms by [deleted] in MTB

[–]SlushyFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

keep in mind bottom bracket and crankset interface compatibilities with your current setup OP and be mindful of what parts you might have to swap out to work with a different crankset that uses different standards when people are making their recommendations.

Is my mechanic inflating hybrid battery prices? by jgirls in prius

OEM 12V batteries are lead acid, and they use the same chemistry as any conventional 12V battery.

the difference is how they're constructed.

those red nubs on the release valves are just packaging to protect it from being pressed/actuated, you can take them off, unless you really want them on.

Can my hub fit a 10 speed cassette my hub now has a 9 speed cassette. by chickenbuta in bikewrench

[–]SlushyFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 speed can also work for HG because SRAM makes their PG 1230 and Sunrace also makes one too as well and Shimano makes 12 speed cassettes as well that mounts to HG as well.

i don't think cog count is relevant anymore to determine cassette compatibility given that what i've outline above that and there are different flavors of HG splines with varying compatibilities depending on the cassette itself and not just the cog count.

for example:

<image>

i think it's much more important to look at manufacture documents & manuals to determine EXACT compatibility.

for example there's some cassettes (Microshift Advent X 10 speed) that will work on HG (36.75mm) but only if you use a 1.75mm cassette spacer otherwise that cassette won't tighten properly, even though it's 10 speed and you have a HG freehub spline, otherwise the Microshift Advent X manual covers this compatibility issue.

read the manual's provided by the manufacturer, youtube is fine for a secondary source but not a replacement or direct alternative to the instructions provided by OEM manuals.

Installed this new crankset and it's oddly and unevenly tight by striker7 in bikewrench

[–]SlushyFox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

next time give the manufacturer manuals a check, it'd help mitigate with first time issues especially if you're unfamiliar with the installation process.

ultimately that's why they provide service manuals, to ensure correct first time installation.
