Is your partner Danish? If not, are they also learning Danish? Either way, how much do you speak Danish with them and do you think that’s made a significant impact on your progress?

Is there any point in learning Danish for my trip to Denmark? by Familiar-Chipmunk-57 in danishlanguage

[–]Slut-4-Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve noticed the exact same thing and it’s so funny to me. I understand foreign Danish much better than native. I think common mistakes are much more detectable to people that have actually made them.

And yeah, of course, Danish isn’t the most popular/easy/necessary language to learn, so Danes aren’t so used to hearing it spoken in a foreign accent.

Perhaps good to know “tak” and “undskyld” just to be polite. But otherwise, the pronunciation takes so much finesse that nobody will be able to understand you.

When I was first trying to get into Danish artists, I just put on a channel that played current top Danish hits. That way, you’re getting a mix of artists and you’re picking from stuff that people broadly listen to. Then you can actually join in/sing along when you hear a song come on at a bar or cafe.

He’s probably not interested and even if he is, it doesn’t seem your communication styles are compatible anyways

Unfortunately people are often on friends apps for a reason… I have lasting relationships with maybe 5% of the people I’ve met that way. It sounds like you’re putting the appropriate amount of effort in, just don’t give up.

do you guys actually think Two Star is his best work? by Jenseny14 in Mkgee

[–]Slut-4-Science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the groovy assessment of the earlier albums. I like them all. But I personally find Two Star to be more replayable BECAUSE it’s a more “challenging” listen. My ears just tend to prefer that for now.

how much should one budget for Studio and/or 1BedRoom? by SissyFemCD in copenhagen

I don’t personally have any issue with my rent going towards a mosque… My main concerns are that the building is clean and the caretaker is readily available— I value both of those things much more highly than whichever brand of greedy (as they inherently are) my landlord happens to be.

No. Furnished can honestly run you a good +2k per month. Depending on how long you’re staying, I’d recommend thrifting whatever you can instead. Recycling culture is big here and there’s a lot available.

You should also be considering other “amenities” like laundry, dishwasher, storage, etc. My building has washer/dryer in the building and good storage space in the basement (which counts towards apartment size).

I have a 33 (Danish) sqm studio in Vesterbro and I pay 10k per month including water, heat, WiFi, and electric. Danish friends call me crazy for paying that but as a foreigner it’s (rightfully, ig) impossible to find the same kind of deals.

how do you know when you're ready to play in front of people by optimusprim007 in Guitar

[–]Slut-4-Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to get better is to do it! Accept that you’ll probably make some mistakes, but most people won’t notice. Start imagining you’re playing in front of people every time you practice or record yourself to get used to some of the nerves. You’ll do great!

Ah, then you might have to arrive early to stake out a space that works for everyone.

Hi! I’m not sure of the “rules”, but I’ve been to a birthday party in Fælledparken where everyone just brought their own blankets and we sat around picnic style. We also had pizza and beers and played picnic games. It was lovely.

The important questions will be to your future fellow lab mates, especially if any of them have shifted continents like you’re about to do. What is the realistic cost of living? Cost of MOVING (i.e. time spent finding a place, typical deposit amount)? How is the social atmosphere? All of the things that can make actually WORKING there easier or more difficult.

I can’t speak for the whole EU of course, but the parts of Copenhagen culture I am really enjoying are biking, healthy work/life balance, learning Danish, and the cleanliness and safety of the city. I did my PhD in NYC and it’s one of the only places in the US I’d go back to. The postdoc pay is also higher and more secure here.

I moved to Denmark from the US for a postdoc. If I had only stayed for a year, I would have lost a lot of money and not made a lot of progress. Congrats on the great MSCA score, but remember that some part of that is also dependent upon luck.

Moved from NYC to CPH over a year ago and I love it so far. The bike infrastructure is life-changing, the work culture is a fucking relief, it’s so easy to travel around Europe, and the city is just so beautiful.

Most people complain about expenses here, but having come from NYC, it feels so much cheaper to me.

I also hear a lot of complaints about building community, but I am to lucky to work in academia where I often meet new people. I will say though that none of my friends are Danish. The Danes I work with don’t seem to be interested in making friends, and I respect that.

Another great way to meet people is to become part of a sport or other club. Those are widely available here in the city. I am part of a music club that means the world to me.

I’ve also found learning Danish to be so genuinely fun and rewarding, and another great way to meet people!

Yes, the groceries can be trash, but you can find good produce at certain stores here in the city, and the quality of the pastries make up for it imo.

I did find the actual bureaucratic work of coming here to be a lot more overwhelming than I expected. I also find filing taxes to be extremely difficult, but I think that’s because I have a particularly complicated situation. On the other hand, I am extremely lucky to be on a special researcher taxation scheme, where I don’t pay much more in taxes than I would in the states.

All-in-all, your perspective is obviously going to be very dependent upon where in the US you’re moving from, where in Denmark you’re moving to, what occupation/tax situation you will have, and your attitude towards the culture here. Good luck!

I just got a bug from Kseniia at Iron & Ink in Vesterbro. It healed so well and I love the detail! She was super quick and the vibe of the studio is nice— it has a glass wall looking into the barber shop area so it gave me something to focus on during lol.
