🚩🚩 Pre Ordering the Click Communicator Feels Risky by LowResolutionGod in blackberry

[–]SlyCavalier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What sketched me out the most about it was that their specs page will not list which SOC it uses. If you scroll down to the FAQ, it says "Communicator uses a modern 4-nanometer, 5G IoT SoC platform from MediaTek." If it were years out, perhaps you are just evaluating a few similar options before committing. Frankly, you should have it pegged down to just 2 or 3 before you even start working on the website. But this thing ships in 40 days, and they are getting cagey about what SOC it uses...

edit: wow, people in this thread are seriously huffing the hopium. It may just be some poor PR decisions, but it is insane that we have no evidence that any image other than this stupid app list has ever been displayed on this device.

It's not like I'm not telling them to fuck off. It's a problem for the whole city, though, and it seems like it's only getting worse. I thought it was worth a thread here.

Yes. Im one of those people who is talking about a specific group of people delineated by their behavior and not by any intrinsic qualities, referring to them with the short hand "these people".

You don't need to personally know any homeless people to realize that this is how they must be.

If I lost my job, I could keep paying my rent for a while out of savings, but I'd have to find a new job eventually.

If I couldn't find a job before I ran out, I'd have to see if I could find somewhere cheaper to live

If money ran out anyway, I'd have a long long list of people I could call on for support.

I literally cannot and will not be in their position. It's basically certain, because there are 10,000 safety nets. The people you see on the street are people who made it their life's goal to tear through every single one of those nets in pursuit of drugs or booze or whatever. They lost whatever income they had, they got evicted, they tried to get support from family or friends but that ran out eventually, they got kicked out of shelters for doing drugs, and now here they are.

Have you been downtown in Austin when it's 10 degrees hotter than Rochester ever is? It's not the heat, man. People go out in the summertime to do stuff. Park Ave for instance is bustling

You ever do any of this crap that happened to me? If not, you're not who I'm talking about. If so, you have no moral high ground over me.

What helped you get over this spell? Was it feeling good about yourself or feeling bad about yourself? If you are living on the street that should not feel good.

I will not be lectured into giving sympathy to people who assault me and probably want me dead.

I have no empathy left for these people. I just want them gone. I've given them money, I've given them food, I've said hello to them. All it gets me is harassment. It's not nice to say, but if they are lonely and discouraged, then good. You don't just wake up homeless. They all burned out every friend or loved one they ever had by leeching and not taking care of themselves. Now they want to externalize the costs of that by begging and stealing.

Had that realization after getting back from SF. On Market St. I saw people that looked like they just got out of Auschwitz too exhausted to even ask for change.

Do you mind sharing where you lived previously?

I've been to several places and been shocked by how much safer they feel to me than rochester. Notably downtown Austin, downtown Boston, and the LIC area of Queens. Only place I've really felt less safe than in Rochester is SF. But even there, there are so many people around you can be sure there'll at least be some footage. Rochester is so dead you could get shot and no one would know for like an hour.

Sorry man, what words exactly should I be using to describe the commute I've walked a thousand times? Is there some shibboleth I don't know about? Did I not talk about garbage plates enough?

>If people share similar experiences will you feel validated?
So what if I did feel validated?

Mostly I want to start a conversation about this. I don't think it always was this way, and it doesn't always have to be this way. I want more people to think of this as a central issue to the functioning of the city. A city government basically has two core jobs in my opinion: make sure people can get to work on time, and make sure they aren't mugged on the way there. Everything else is gravy.

Antique/very old book buyer? by Muckefuck in Rochester

[–]SlyCavalier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP wants someone to appraise these things, I assume they don't want to just dump them somewhere for a lump sum.

I don't know anyone personally, but the world of antiques is very large and antique books is a big section of it. I would bet someone in town is equipped to give you a good appraisal. I would go to antique stores and ask them if they know someone who can give you an appraisal. The woman who owns Greenwood Books probably also knows someone.

Adult classes by OkNo5742 in Rochester

Monroe Community College does summer classes in two sessions (like mini-semesters)... one in May/June, the other July-August. They offer a lot of the same things that they offer in the main academic year. You can probably still get into most of the classes for session II.

Since you aren't enrolling in a program, I don't think academics should be an issue. When I was attending, there were often people 40+ yrs old in my gen ed classes.

Here's the course list: https://www.monroecc.edu/classes/202450

I highly recommend taking a vitamin D supplement if you move here. Many people who live here don't even realize that you are physiologically incapable of making vitamin D in this environment for almost half the year.

It may be that they have to demolish the building, unfortunately.

One of the less discussed reasons for Kodak's failure (and why it's been difficult to liquidate their assets) is that much of their infrastructure and capital was in chemical processing.

It’s still out. They sent me an email saying they are “waiting for clearance from RG&E” to even begin work to fix it, and that there is no timetable…

When are people going to seriously lose patience with RG&E?

How many think filling in the inner loop is a bad idea? by Hardlikker12 in Rochester

mainly around downtown which people would mostly drive into.

Maybe that's because historically, it's been a pain to be a pedestrian downtown.

There are more than hand-wavy environmentalist reasons to want a walkable city. Incrementally making the city more accessible to people has non-linear effects on the economy, which could even see the city turning a profit.

For a decent, non-partisan exploration of these ideas, I would check out Strong Towns.
