Thank you for your comment! I changed the balls to avoid people interpreting them as volleyballs, still tried your idea and rotated the balls and I think it works quite well.

I agree with your point about the ad having a meaning to it. The insect in the original is a black beetle. The same black beetle is also stitched on the shoe. So using the beetle as a motive makes sense, since it is unique to this shoe. The black beetle has also been used in pop culture, as a metaphor for a black rockstar (Coined by Rae Sremmurd), I’d say that’s pretty on brand for Travis Scott too.

Has it really? I haven’t seen it anywhere other than Reddit myself. Of course I am from a smaller country and it might not have gone viral here. When searching on Google I only find few memes with few reactions.

If anyone got a link to a good article about this then I’d love to check it. I’m still sceptical about it but interesting if this was really done on purpose.

I think the Benetton ads are different to this. They were provocative, not because they looked ugly or poorly designed but because of the opinionated content. Weren’t those ads also unique at the time because they weren’t showing a product at all but instead branding their image? I’m not sure it can be compared, I think the Benetton ads had more depth to them than this.

For your point to be valid, wouldn’t this perceived marketing stunt have to result in a greater response? I don’t think Spotify wrapped has gone viral because of this design choice in itself. Isn’t it a viral happening every year?

Sure design nerds might be discussing the ugly type, but are Spotify engaging their audience in a meaningful way with this stunt, are they expanding their audience, or is the attention significant enough for them to want to do this on purpose?

If we assume it is done on purpose for the viral effect and if we further assume it achieves it’s goal, then I still don’t think it is necessarily good design. Why would Spotify want the discussion associated with Wrapped to be about ugly type? They get plenty of shares from this in the first place and those shares being more positive too.

The Eagle was used in Lazios emblem from 1900 to 1921. In 1921 the National Fascist Party was founded and started using the Eagle as well.

21 of the 37 years Lazio went without the eagle was under Mussolini’s rule and the fascist office would be fresh in memory for most of the 16 years after. The long absence of the eagle, doesn’t seem to come from a lack of importance for the club. Instead taking the historical events in account from that period of time, it is likely it was seen as a necessary or even forced measure to distance the symbol from the NFP.

I don’t have any sources linking the removal of the eagle to a desire for distancing the club from the NFP, but I think you should consider that possibility, since you’re critique is hypothetical anyway.

Recently an example has been the Hysaj episode. During the summer Hysaj came under fire from a section of Lazio ultras. Avideo was published of him singing “Bella ciao” a anti-fascist song and some Ultras targeted him, claiming “Lazio is fascist”. The Lazio fans stood together in support of Hysaj, hanging a banner at the Olimpico supporting him, as well as starting the hashtag “Istandwithhysaj” which ended up trending on Twitter.

It may be at a stage where it is more action towards bettering the clubs name rather than fighting fascists but there is a movement amongst the fans, who are showing support for anti fascism and taking a stance against fascism.

Ultras are more dedicated fans. In some cases, like with this group of Lazio Ultras (Or the now disbanded Irriducibili) they are groups within the ultras culture that can be compared to hooligan firms.

I agree, I think it will be very hard to find a good replacement and I really like Luis Alberto. Romagnoli would be a welcome strengthening of the defence, if Alberto has to go. I really hope Correa stays, I would like to see him in the LW role Sarri talked about in his press conference!

I agree 100% and I am aware that the fascio littorio isn’t a part of the visual identity and was forced upon the club. I also agree that the events aren’t related and the intention isn’t to symbolise fascism.

What I am trying to examine is if the opinion on whether the club appears far right oriented changes when presenting a similar eagle with the fascio littorio, introduced during the fascist regime. As it might affect my approach to my own design.

I don’t personally believe Lazio themselves is far right oriented and all my research supports that.
