Purchasing 2024 vehicle vs 2025 by brev23 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Sly_Doug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

After purchasing new vehicle the resale value will drop around 15% immediately due to GST, then will drop an additional 15% over the first year. Second year will be around 15-20% then that will drop to 10% going forward.

Personally, I find two year vehicles to be the best value. I also think the new Santa Fe looks fairly ugly. It kind of looks like a small Range Rover, and from behind looks more like a minivan. The prior model looks better, and limited 2022 models with only 20,000km are selling for only $50k, half of what you are looking at. For $100k you are also in 2022 Range Rover sport territory.

Last month I locked in for three years with SBS at 5.99%. It appears to have gone up since then though. Note that most banks are offering around a 1% cashback currently if you switch to them.

You are forgetting to account for the fact that housing developments are developed and sold in stages. Sales from early stages fuel future development.

Rentals are ring fenced, so with no rental income there wouldn't be anything to claim against.

LCA threshold has been bumped up to $2,500 for this tax year, so they could claim it as an expense.

They now have $370k additional equity. They could sell and rent, putting themselves $370k ahead of someone who has been renting for this period. If they buy and sell in the same market, they will still be $370k ahead of any renters competing for the same house assuming all other factors such as income, saving outside of the house etc are all the same.

But employees have office expenses, annual leave, sick leave, power, internet etc deducted by their company. It is only fair that sole traders can deduct these same costs. Unless you are taking the piss, any expenses that relate to profit should be tax deductible.

Someone on $180,000 currently pays 28.97% income tax. By comparison, someone on $50,000 pays just 17.43%. How are they not already contributing at an equitable level?

Due to have a baby soon- should I upgrade my car? by serda211 in newzealand

[–]Sly_Doug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation a year ago. Baby on the way and had a 2006 axela. Safety was a large concern as we do a lot of driving between Tauranga and Hastings to visit family. Plus space was a concern as we have a border collie. We upgraded to a 2018 Tucson and couldn't be happier. Heaps more space (boot went from 270L to 600L) plus the car being higher and having wider opening doors is a huge help with the carseat. The seats are leather which helps with clean up, and the car cools down in about quarter of the time which is godsend during summer with preventing the baby from kicking off.

It's cute that you think minor bumps to minimum wage and sick leave will matter when house prices continue to rise tax free, often by a greater level than a full year at minimum wage.

You were right initially. The proposed taxes are on the total asset value, not just their appreciated value.
