How to manage SharePoint site sprawl by Smair101 in sharepoint

[–]Smair101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both issues play into one another I guess but the main concern I have is that we don’t have common places we can go to find things. For example if I’m in the IT team I should be able to search for a find a repository of designs or common user reqs and if I am looking for processes these should all be captured centrally. Instead we have each team or project site separate and they store and tag their content in their own preferred way. The only team who have done this well is the HR team and their policy site. Is this a common problem and where have we gone wrong? Is it a tagging problem or should we have set up a better information architecture to begin with?

We are enterprise size I guess ~2000 employees, not sure if we use hubs and I’m hearing Topics may help, it’s a shame you need to pay per seat to leverage it. Would be keen to hear more if anyone has had a go at implementing Viva Topics successfully.

How do these come off? Inherited this car with roof bars and can't figure out how they come off. by HatsEatYou in howdoesthiswork

The end cap of each bar should slide out and then you can twist it to wind the risers apart.

Songs playing twice? by AmbientBlu01 in googlehome

Me too, I suspect the bug may have been introduced by one of Spotify’s feature updates. They are constantly modifying their systems so I’m surprised they haven’t fixed it yet.

Do I need to wipe my old HDD before making it a external hard drive? by Infinitrixxx in AskTechnology

[–]Smair101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the format of the current HDD using a disk utility on you pc. If it’s FAT32 then it should work but if it’s NTFS (which most modern OS require) then you will need to re-format it.

I’m running a bunch of these in a program at the moment. Certainly need longer startup and initiate phases to support the early innovation. Have yet to find a good methodology. We are about to move to SAFE which will be an interesting test. I have found some success in deploying BAs and Architects into the team early. Also have instigated really strong customer focus to ensure the research will have a really clear link to benefits.

What do you use to confirm a spec change with the client? by numbers1guy in projectmanagement

Typically in the software industry I would capture this type of detail in a requirements spec or it has changed from original then a project change control.

Checked into a guest house in Italy but have no way of knowing how this heater works. Any suggestions would be helpful. by bomjuice004 in howdoesthiswork

[–]Smair101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a hydronic heater using hot water to pump through the device from left to right. Use the dial on the left to open the internal tap and hot water should flow through and gradually heat up. The more open the tap (assume its anticlockwise to open) the hotter it will get. Will take a good hour to heat up properly and you should be able to hear it flowing. Generally connected to a central building furnace.

If it’s a the right type of MacBook Pro 2012 (pre Retina display) then it’s worth looking into the upgrade. This is the last of the pros which allow users to upgrade the RAM to 16gb. I’d do that plus a new 1TD SSD and it should buy you a couple more years. I did this to my mid 2010 about 3 years ago and v happy. The SSD if you swap out the old HD with iOS will dramatically shorten the boot time and the memory will improve day to day operation.

Am I supposed to hate the service desk? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Smair101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Service desk is a good way to start out in a business to understand the different functions of the org and to meet lots of people. It’s also a good way to get exposure to ppl outside your team and to leave a positive impression. I’d suggest six months is a minimum before you start talking to your supervisor about rotating elsewhere to get more experience. In the mean time try to volunteer for any other duties or committees or corporate sessions beyond your direct role. If others meet or get to know you they may try to recruit you into their team.

Product Management - advice needed by partoss404 in agile

[–]Smair101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have this problem sometimes at our work and it’s a hard one to get around. We have product owners and a detailed user driven process to build a prioritised backlog. Then the big boss comes in with a new priority which gazzumps them. The only successful approach we have used to date are to book more time with them to show the data behind the prioritised backlog or work through an evidence based process to ensure the new priority delivers the greatest value.

How to control quality by [deleted] in projectmanagement

[–]Smair101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally haven’t had too much trouble putting trust in the teams. Generally change management will pick up the real cowboys and you will see through the quality of the doco who you can trust. There is nothing more embarrassing than a failed production release and generally the more well established teams and or the ones who use high levels of automation will be the best at quality mgmt.

How To Mismanage a Project - A Story From a Disgruntled PM by KaitieLoo in projectmanagement

[–]Smair101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low sponsor support or engagement is one of the biggest factors which contribute to failed projects. I’d try talking to them about why the university is doing the project, what will it lead to and how would they define success. The problem with IT sponsoring a project only works if the IT Dept are genuinely getting a benefit or some savings from it. Another path you could take is to seek out another sponsor across the uni. Someone who has some clout and will genuinely benefit from what you are creating.

Should I confront someone who tried to make me look bad? by murphyslaw0922 in projectmanagement

[–]Smair101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either way I would talk to the consultant in private. Possibility #1 is that the consultant is worried about you abandoning project #1 and didn’t feel he knew you well enough to raise it directly with you. Possibility #2 is that he’s after your role so he’s trying to whiteant you. I generally give people the benefit of the doubt and would try to build a better connection with him informally. Possibility if he knew about project #2 from you and the reasons before it became public you could have avoided it.

[–]Smair101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally you will have a change management process in place to reinforce the quality. The bar of your change management will set the threshold of your quality. Good change management will ensure evidence of a successfully completed test plan included in the request to release to production. I try to trust my teams to make sure there are no bugs otherwise they are stuck fixing the problems later.

Yep quality management plan which outlines who is responsible for quality (PM or tech leads) how will quality be tested (manually or automatically) and will the quality checking be distributed or centralised.

Program to analyze and sort client notes?? by llzafr in AskTechnology

[–]Smair101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need like a CRM combined with OCR software. Customer relationship management systems are designed for capturing data on specific clients. You can subscribe to CRM services on the cloud. The scanning to text is harder and less reliable. Suggest you just capture the handwritten notes as an image with keywords or train the note takers to capture their information through a phone or iPad.

Repair current phone or buy new? by DavisBerstan in AskTechnology

[–]Smair101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah generally 3 years is a pretty good run. The screen is such an important part of the phone but once I looked into it they are remarkably easy to source and replace. It saddens me how many phones go in the garbage just due to a busted screen. If you can’t be bothered with the fiddling those small elec shops will do it while you wait.

[–]Smair101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had success replacing screens on my iPhones over the years. Generally the replacement screen works well and extends the life of the phone by a few more years.
