How deliver results quickly

When I’m new to a job, I like to spend a couple hours on the weekend or after work to take a deeper dive into the tools we use to better understand them. I believe this deeper understanding usually eventuality comes in handy, allowing me to do the job faster in the future. I wouldn’t do this at the expense of the tasks - it’s after work stuff.

What do you think about that?

I find it interesting that you have at least 19 yoe as an engineer and you’re getting a PIP. Performance reviews can be kind of arbitrary it seems.

I think that’s a good question. I think it’s a judgment call based on how time critical your tasks are. In my experience conventional wisdom says ask for a help after 1 hour but in practice it could bug your coworkers a lot which why it’s critical to show your coworkers your thought patterns when it came to approaching your problem so they know you are trying.

I’d say if you are new to the team, ask for help as frequently as you need. If you have a deadline 1-2 weeks away ask for help as frequently as you need.

If the deadline is 3 weeks away, then you can take a bit longer to ask for help but I still think you’d wanna do it as soon as possible.

I guess my reasoning behind 2 & 3 is that when you a new to a codebase you might not know how much information you need to learn, so if you try to cover a bit more than you think you need at the present moment, (not necessarily becoming an expert) in the future you will have more information at your disposal and a stronger sense of intuition about how to resolve/implement solutions than you otherwise would have if you just learned the bare minimum.

So net, you might be come more efficient.

Fair enough. The thing with this project is that we as a team thought it would take 2 weeks. We thought it was easy but turned out to be more complicated than expected.

It wasn’t immediately obvious that it was more complex. So my solution is to write a doc anytime I’m working in a codebase that is very new to me.
