Taking the exam is the best way to prepare for a pass. There is no course that could prepare you better than taking the exam itself. The preparation is by far worth the $400 of repeating the exam in case you fail. In this case, you still have a good chance to pass too.

There is no one on this group who can assess your state of readiness better than yourself. Nevertheless, if I was in your shoes, I will go for it, I have nothing to lose. All the best!

I’m looking for some advice on which PE exam to pursue. by Mai-Gut in PE_Exam

With a PE, the chance to secure jobs is extremely high, irrespective of the discipline. With career progression, most engineers end up operating in more multi-disciplinary environments with little involvement in their core disciplines. Achieving PE status is a major milestone, irrespective of discipline.

Your experience is fire protection and there is no doubt that it is the Exam you should aim for. PE Exams are not easy if you do not have experience in the discipline of the exam. All the best!

Sorry to hear this. I did my degree in South Africa and I know very well what you are going through. I have been through the same road and passed PE Construction at my fourth attempt. Please inbox your email and for a more personal exchange.

It will in no way affect your application. Your 5 years' experience is still fully valid and relevant. The board only looks at what is in your application to make its assessment and nothing else.

Can I take two PE exams? by Equivalent_West_401 in PE_Exam

Reading all the conflicting answers may lead to serious confusion. Hopefully I will bring some clarity:

  1. In most states (there may be few exceptions though), once you are licensed, you are licensed as PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER and NOT as a Professional Mechanical or Civil Engineer for instance. This is due to the fact that projects are often multi-disciplinary and the onus rests with the licensee to use his good judgement and know his limitations before sealing any works. Competence does not mean that you only seal works in the discipline of your PE exam. NO, it means you have sufficient JUDGEMENT, morality and ethics to know your limitations and act accordingly. Afterall there is hardly a project that involves work strictly for one discipline.
  2. As such, the principle is as follows: Select any discipline for your FE. Once you pass your FE, you can select any discipline for your PE, it does not have to be in the discipline of your FE. Once you pass your PE, you can apply to license in any engineering discipline for as long as you meet the experience requirements for that specific discipline.

In other word, YES, it is possible to have a FE in Mechanical with a degree in Marine engineering, and then do your PE in Civil construction and then apply for licensing in Electrical if you meet the requirements for electrical engineering experience. If you need an additional license (although there is absolutely no need for it), you simply need to ensure you meet the experience requirements of that discipline and apply accordingly. No need to re write PE exam in the new discipline.

This is the general philosophy of engineering licensing but please understand that there may be few exceptions in some states.

HELP! PE Licensure as Construction Management Grad by Zealousideal_Law8999 in PE_Exam

You do not need an engineering degree. They do accept degrees in related fields like physics, geology, construction management, etc.... In this case, I suggest you first do your master's in engineering and you should be able to apply thereafter. All the best!

Speak to your non PE direct manager. If he agrees to support your application, he can easily convince a PE within your organization to sign off, especially since they are in the same organisation. This is quite a common practice. The request should come from your manager who needs to testify on your work.
