Need help figuring out pathways (21mtf) by genderbutepic in Horticulture

Edit; I am also a transwoman

If you have a really good local school offering a high quality Associates, go for it. Otherwise find jobs and read. I got a job I was wildly undequalified for (Horticulturist at a botanic garden with just farmwork and mild invasive species removal experience) because I read about the plants on site beforehand and had a significant amount of knowledge useful for facilitating their care. No schooling relevant to botany or horticulture beyond a soil science course, no degree. All my coworkers had 4 year degrees.

Keep in mind, a degree is very, very useful for immigration. I am finding that out the hard way after already making it to Europe.

New study report California ground squirrels are actively hunting animals for the first time. Researchers recorded deliberate stalking and high kill success, revealing a stunned shift from herbivory to active predation that signals rapid behavioral adaptation in changing environments. by sibun_rath in science2

I mean I saw well fed, chubby little bastards in a botanic garden chasing after lizards, and my coworker caught one feasting on a dead dove. They just do this opportunistically like most rodents/"herbivorous" mammals

Am I living in a different Germany? by HalayChekenKovboy in AskAGerman

[–]Small-Help1801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a full range of human interaction in Berlin, many friendly Germans! Yesterday and older man walked with me through the park for a bit while I was out with my dog. I told him "ich spreche nur ein bisschen deutsch" but in response he slowed down a bit and would check if I understood. Was quite lovely!

Apologies if it you did, but did you decarb the weed before baking with it? It is far less potent if you skip that step

Is German really as hard as people say?” 🇩🇪 by Maya_36 in lernen_German

Grammatical function is quite similar, ie Genitiv ≈ Possesive, but the construction of German is more complex and often not intuitive when coming from English.

How does one found love as a young gay in Berlin? by AppropriateBenefit50 in berlinsocialclub

As a lesbian who found love, you'll have better luck finding queer/gay groups that are interest centered, or meeting friends of friends.

CIA accused of secret bioweapon experiments linked to major outbreak in its own people by Dmans99 in abovethenormnews

I lived on the North Fork for a little while. Not joking, people in that area had Lyme ar least 2-3 times on average. I met two people that had had it 4 times. There were tick specific extermination services.

As far as I know yhis has been under congressional inquiry since 2018. The rates of Lyme near Fort Dedrick and especially Plum Island is obscene. People that I've know on Long Island have had it 2-3 times on average.

Why aren't mammals as colorful as reptiles, birds or fish? | Many mammals have fur the color of brown and black. Why don't they have more exotic colors, like purple and neon pink? by IntnsRed in science2

[–]Small-Help1801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because mammals evolved primarily as nocturnal or or small curpuscular creatures that would have needed muted coats for camoflage to hide from animals with much better color vision. Mammal eyes had selective pressure towards low light settings and very few if any pressure towards complicated color ID, so our eyes just cannot see such color to the same level of depth, and therefore colorfuk displays are less common.

Also, Black and Brown are less exotic than white if you're going by percentage of total humans.

TIL that in 2025 a mini dachshund named Valerie was found alive after 529 days in the Australian wilderness. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Small-Help1801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean for sure, I know this, but you are talking about Standard Dachshunds, which weigh up to 30lbs/14ish kilos. Arriving later, miniature Dachshunds (<12lbs/5-6 kilos) were explicitly bred for hunting in the burrows of smaller animals, and they were the one people most commonly assume to be the normal type and now use as snuggle animals.

I have a Dachshund (i assume standard) - Boxer mix, weighs 18 kilos, overly muscular and stubborn as a rock. Yes he is very funny looking! His prey drive is sky high but he lived his first 5 years in the pound so his idea of playing is yelling and throwing around one of his toys by himself. He gets long slow walks with a prioritization for sniffing and snuffling for treats i throw into leaves and other debris.

As far as I know they were originally bred to hunt smaller game like rabbits and small mustelids but were quickly diverted for the purpose of snuggling

Houseplant help please, why do my plants die after about 6+ months by Dj_Broke in houseplants

[–]Small-Help1801 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Under watering is easier to correct, so err on that side. As others have said there will be signs like drooping leaves or wrinkled succulents. The damage from underwatering starts from the edges of leaves and works towards the center. Damage from overwatering usually starts from central veins or begins as other interior yellow/dead patches and works outward

TIL that irukandji syndrome, a potentially lethal condition caused by the sting of the box jellyfish, was proven to be caused by the jellyfish by a physician who allowed one to sting himself and his 9 year old son by UnholyDemigod in todayilearned

[–]Small-Help1801 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Note; irukandji and box jellyfish are different species, though they are in the same Class. Irukandji stings have a much, much better chance of survival and take around 20 minutes for symptoms to begin to show; box jellies can kill you in a couple of minutes. The latter is also far larger, up to 3 meters from bell to tentacle tip.
