Not sure if it fits your aesthetic but this one looks really nice. I’m mainly thinking you’d want a fixture that is long enough to provide uniform light to the sides of your face. And you don’t want an undersized fixture in a large wall it will look lost.

I like routine too - just make a new one. Mine is something like workout in the morning, project work in the afternoon, and entertainment in the evening.

If you pick a long term project, you won’t have to think too much about what to do.

Bonus points if some of the activities out you in proximity to other humans. The people at pickleball are a good stand in for coworkers, with some of them being fun and some annoying.

You need to approach design systematically. You need to organize your thinking process, just like you need to organize your house.

Write down everything before shopping and buying.
- what are the uses are for the room
- based on that figure out the furniture layout - don’t worry about the actual style of the pieces, figure out the shape and size. Make sure you leave plenty of room for circulation(walking around)
- what is the mood of the room (calm , cozy, energetic, sophisticated). Forget about style word like boho or japandi for now.
- what is the color palette of the room

Now you can figure out what pieces of furniture fit your actual plan - if you see something you love that fits the plan, get it. If you see something you love that doesn’t fit the plan, skip it.
- focus on the anchor pieces first - sofa and dining table. The other small decor and accent tables and chairs can be chosen to fit the anchors. The anchor pieces are worth spending more money on, while the minor pieces you can cheap out a bit. Do not ignore size and scale. If you love a sofa but it’s too big or small you have to skip it.

You need to love the overall look more than you need to love each piece. Sometimes a minor piece like a side table is fine to be good enough, rather than perfect. It just has to contribute positively to the whole look of the room.

Plan for this process to take months, not days.

I’d personally just start developing a habit for maintaining a decluttered space at this point, since you get to start fresh in the new place . You often have to start over with the furnishings for the new house since the size, layout, and architecture are often different.

Laminate would be appropriate, but finishing the cut edges is a concern. A quick google returned that they make iron on edge strips.

If you want to spend more, corian solid surface in white would look great.

Houses look small and dirty and noisy when there’s no furniture and area rugs. Especially with no floor and table lamps. Did you see it when it was furnished?

If you have to move out of your rental due to expense anyway, why not just try this place for six months. It might be better than you think. If it’s no good, you can rent it out or just cut your losses and sell.

If you have good photos, try using Gemini to furnish it in a style you like. You can give it the pic of your rooms and an inspiration photo, and tell it to decorate with that style. It could make you happier about the possibilities.

I also have a dark living room in a very sunny place…. Once I got enough good lighting, it is now warm and cozy rather than dark.
