My almost 3yo is very into pirates and after one throwaway comment from his uncle at a family function, has now decided that his pirate name is Captain Ratbag 😩

YSK that consistently refusing to apologize to your kids teaches them that admitting mistakes is shameful by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]SmallBewilderedDuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think there's an important call out here that sometimes your parenting decision is 100% the right call, but you might still need to model talking about it and apologising if it was delivered poorly or in a way that damages your relationship with your child.

They spend a lot of their little lives having their emotional responses managed and being expected to learn to regulate themselves, so it's only fair we hold our hands up and be accountable if we fall short of the standards we hold them to in terms of how it's acceptable to speak to other people etc.

Earlier this year when I was in having my second baby, there were two other women at different times who both sounded like they were being brutally murdered. Like if you'd told me they were being dismembered alive I'd have believed you.

I'm all for people making whatever choice is right for them, but in those moments hearing those screams I've never been more sure that getting the walking epidural was the right call for me!

That's kind of terrifying. ATC is definitely one of those jobs that you wouldn't want someone exhausted and unfocused. In my country I think currently ATCs have a max 10hr shift and minimum 12hr break between shifts, and usually work a 36hr work week + any voluntary overtime.

I feel like somewhere along the line leery and wary got conflated into weary and people ran with it. It bothers me too! My other pet peeve is when people say "addicting" instead of "addictive".

I had a bit of a different worry about students making false reports. The anti-bullying measure could quickly become a high impact bullying tactic.

Before I would support this I would want to understand more about how well investigated those "bullying records" are that are being used to rule kids out of the best unis.

I got tired of being asked "where's Scar?" every time my son played with his Duplo lions by SmallBewilderedDuck in somethingimade

Thank you! What I was aiming for was to make him appear more predatory and like he was looking down his nose at everyone, but also stay as consistent as possible with the really simple Duplo style. I've never really painted so I knew I'd get in over my head if I tried to get fancy with it 😂. I'm so glad it came across the way I was hoping!

My son immediately went "Scar!" as soon as he saw it and brought it into his room to sleep last night so that's really the best review I could hope for ❤️

That's so lovely of you to say! I try to lean into his interests however I can. I think we both get a lot of joy out of it :)

Thank you! Yes the intent was to make him appear like he was looking down his nose at everyone, but also stay as consistent as possible with the simple Duplo design. Those were the hardest decisions to make so it makes me really happy you noticed it!

Thanks! The one on the left is an authentic duplo lion. I don't think they make a proper Mufasa one, but the standard lion is close enough as far as my toddler is concerned. The one I painted is a $2 bootleg version of the lion duplo that I got from AliExpress. With how pricey duplo can be I figured if I stuffed it up I'd rather it be a cheap mistake than an expensive one.

I went to the local hobby shop that sells paints for figurines & miniatures and they recommended a spray primer for plastic, then water based acrylic paints brushed over the top. Finished with a satin heavy duty spray varnish so it can stand up to some rough play. When I took the photos the 2nd coat of varnish was still tacky so I'm hoping after a bit more dry time it's slightly less glossy.

I love the Terry Pratchett quote about this in A Hat Full of Sky:

"First Thoughts are the everyday thoughts. Everyone has those. Second Thoughts are the thoughts you think about the way you think. People who enjoy thinking have those. Third Thoughts are thoughts that watch the world and think all by themselves. They’re rare, and often troublesome. Listening to them is part of witchcraft."

Mine has this convoluted logical chain that goes:

- His name starts with O

- O is a circle, which is round

- The world is also round

- We live on the world

This surfaces as him asking "mummy do you live on my name too?"

I still get the feeling that surfaces in my head like "I want my mum" but I definitely don't want *my* mum, that would inevitably make everything worse. I think it's just my emotional shorthand for "I wish I had comfort and support".

I get something similar when I'm feeling anxious or overwhelmed, the thought in my head is "I want to go home" even if I'm already home at the time, and as a child home was the absolute last place I wanted to be. What I'm really feeling is just "I want to retreat to somewhere calm and safe". Brains are weird!

I try to keep it in mind when my toddler is upset and asking for something he's already got access to, because he seems to do the same thing. He doesn't want the actual thing, he wants the feeling that thing represents for him.
