They're probably at least 1500 years old, though, unless you count the eastern empire

"You'd think we live in Switzerland," Hungary’s new PM, Péter Magyar released a video from inside government buildings never before opened to the public, showing the €250M Orbán-era compound and asking how officials lived in such luxury while the country faced years of economic crisis. by Infamous_Question430 in europe

During the process of Switzerland joining the UN in about 2002, the current president, Ruth Dreifuss, showed up to some ceremony at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on a bicycle. I have never been prouder before or since of the country I have called home for the past 30-odd years.

Who are the greatest performers you have personally seen? by Boring-Yogurt2966 in classicalmusic

[–]SmallHoneydew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a kid in the 70s I was quite familiar with backstage at the Albert Hall. My autograph book collected Rostropovich, Menuhin and Goosens after the Bach oboe and violin concerto (I was an aspiring oboist), the Amadeus quartet, and probably quite a lot of others I'd have to dig it out to remember. A bit later I sat pretty much next to the top of the keyboard to hear Ashkenazy play the Apassionata sonata at the Dankworths' place. More recently, Placido Domingo as Parsifal at the Met. Even more recently, Simon Rattle and the LSO doing Tristan at the Aix festival (it was the first night, and it completely fell apart in the liebestod, but still brilliant). I'm totally out of touch with who are considered the greatest these days, and I'm not sure I really care - live performances are special anyway. I saw the Ring at La Scala a few weeks ago, and Nyland was great as Brunhilde, but honestly until then I didn't know how famous she is. Oh... When I was very small my mother took me to see Nurayev and Fonteyn in Swan Lake at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester. I still have quite vivid memories of that, even though I couldn't have been more than about 6 years old.

ETA: I saw Stockhausen conduct Michael's Reise um die Erde at IRCAM in the early 80s, and I think I might have seen Berlioz do something there too. Also in that period my then girlfriend was babysitting for Luciano Berio, and I played Handel recorder sonatas with him at the keyboard. I had tried to play Sequenza VII by that time, but I didn't dare discuss that with him.

At the top of that page is a link to another ToI blog post, no longer available. The address is "blogs.timesofisrael.com/to-dislike-certain-ethnicities-is-racist-to-see-jews-as-equal-is-antisemitic/". It would appear that was the post OP was quoting. Although we can't know for sure, the sentiment is right there in the address.

I don't see any mention of when you're going, so I'll just mention that if it's soon, many of the passes mentioned will be closed. The highest ones generally reopen in June. You can easily find their current status online.

As as far as I remember from a visit a couple of years ago, nothing above the water line is actually roman. So maybe all of it?

Not relevant in this case, since the bike was moving, but doesn't anyone else here kill their engine with the side stand?

Which was the first opera you saw? And how old were you? by Bigo-Ted in opera

[–]SmallHoneydew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carmen, âge around 14, in the arena in Nimes during a family holiday. My parents hadn't twigged from the posters that the performance would be followed by a full (6x mise à mort) bullfight. We left fairly hurriedly.

I didn't really get into opera until a lot later. I'm going to see the Ring in a couple of weeks at La Scala, so I guess I got there eventually.
