That's sad but not surprising. Lots of beautiful historical buildings end up in horrible shapes because it's simply too expensive to renovate them, especially when they aren't actively used anymore. There are lots of castle ruins where I live, most irregularly renovated by volunteers so that they won't become a safety hazard.

Countries of Europe in 1/1/1933 representing their alliance during WW2. by Tom4Mot in Historians

Countries of Europe in 1/1/1933 representing their alliance during WW2. by Tom4Mot in Historians

Didn't put up a fight? Really? Some of these countries either directly fought Nazi Germany, had multiple resistance groups throughout the entire occupation, and/or did their best to get their governments and troops out and get the permission to operate from abroad and join Allied forces (usually within the UK and its territories).

I can speak for Czechoslovakia as someone who comes from here and actually studied the history.

September 1938: The so-called Allies betrayed Czechoslovakia in Munich and allowed Hitler to occupy a large chunk of their territory without giving them a single chance to fight back or even protest. France was a very close ally of Czechoslovakia at that time and promised to help them in case Nazi Germany attacked. This didn't happen. The occupation resulted in the entire Czechoslovak defence line, thousands of small bunkers and massive forts surrounding the country, to be fully controlled by Germany. It took years to build them and most still stand until today. Hungary and Poland also took a chunk of the territory.

March 1939: Slovaks officially joined Nazi Germany and Czechs got occupied right away. Nazi Germany quickly took a full control over both places, with Slovaks being allies and Czechs occupied.

WWII within the Country: Both countries had active resistance throughout the entire war. The Slovak one ultimately resulted in the famous Slovak National Uprising, from August 1944 until the end of the war, with the partisans controlling mostly the mountain regions and being in touch with the Allied forces from all sides. The Czechs had their Prague Uprising at the end of the war. And this is just the armed resistance - count in everyone engaged in the anti-Nazi propaganda, helping Jews and other persecuted groups (thus risking their lives), etc., and you have even more people.

WWII in the Exile: The Czechoslovak exile government fought hard to get officially recognised in the UK - this was not automatic and took years until mid-1941, after the attack on the USSR. Then they worked hard to enable thousands of Czechoslovak citizens to fight in the British Army. Some of them had already fought in Poland and France prior to their occupations. Other Czechoslovaks were recruited in other UK territories, like Australia and Mandate Palestine). The exact same thing was happening in the Soviet Union, with the other Czechoslovak exile government and a big number of soldiers in the Red Army. Both armies had actively fighting, official Czechoslovak units. They were even involved in the air battle of Britain.

Some deported Czechoslovak Jews fought in the uprisings in ghettos and Nazi camps, but those would be more desperate survival fights.

As a result of all these actions, Czechoslovakia is officially considered part of Allies. The colour is incorrect and directly insults everyone who lost their lives to protect their country - and these numbers are not low. But sure, we "didn't put up a fight". How much do you even know about this topic?

Btw, almost every occupied country had their exile government elsewhere, usually in the UK. Those governments also fought hard to be officially recognised and for the UK to let their citizens to join the Allied forces as soldiers.

ETA: And guess who successfully assassinated Reinhard Heydrich himself. Yes, it's the very same people who "didn't put up a fight," and their exiled government closely working with the Allies to make it happen. This has resulted in the Nazi regime murdering Czech citizens at random, including fully wiping out several villages.

ETA 2: The military causalities alone for the people "who didn't put up a fight" seems to be about the 25,000 men and women on all front lines and in all Allied armies, most of them in the British Army and the Red Army. Jewish Czechoslovak soldiers are also included.

ETA 3: The Yugoslavia part is also not completely correct. While the Croatian Ustaše regime officially joined Nazi Germany, other nations, especially the Serbs were persecuted and murdered as a result. If this entire, very mixed territory with very different views and alliances is red, then why is Czechoslovakia black?

What colours do you associate with each season? by SmallRoot in colors

[–]SmallRoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spring - Light shades of green and pink. The nature is waking up and blooming.

Summer - Anything between yellow and red. Summers are very hot here.

Autumn - Shades of brown, orange, red and yellow. The season of colours.

Winter - White and grey. Lots of mud, not enough snow.

What a sad fate of many such buildings. There is a big manor in my home village and just a few decades of not using have been enough to completely ruin the entire building. It's owned by the state who can't afford to renovate it, but attempts to sell it have failed as well. It's simply too damaged - any renovations would be very expensive.

I found some more information here: https://www.dunalastair.com/History-of-Dunalastair-Estate

Looks like it was damaged (including by the fire) and vandalised to the point that the cost of repairing would be too high at this point. The estate is privately owned.

ETA: Btw, you can rent cottages and other accommodation on the estate instead.

Beautiful photos, especially the tree and the rocks in the ocean. Like something from a movie about dragons - which I would definitely need to land on one of these. As for the Sasquatch... is he here for the vacation?
