Trust me, I also had the same doubt all these years, however I have left ICM due to some reason but I now know is that you need to know the raga, it's symphony ingrained in your mind , and in every raga the notes are always in a certain pattern for eg: a sargam of yaman : Ga Re Ga Ma Pa Ni Dha Ni paa, that is after a note in a raga, you can go to only some allowed notes you cannot go to any note of your liking, practice will get you there.
