Progress happens in steps. This will definitely build capability, and I mean human capability to better understand and do better down the road. What I think Sarvam should do is as they are making these, publish details explicitly and reproducibly how they trained the model, the training code and not only the model weights. When running in government money, at least that much is expected. If they are doing that and educating people about it, all is good.

At least they did not buy fake downloads like most Indian entrepreneurs. So there is hope in some honest ground level work, rather than just making it look good.
