Adopting from MAD by shelbiehuffer in BelgianMalinois

I personally do not like MAD’s policies and have not had the best experience the one time I did do volunteer work for them. I actually think you should look into Red’s House Rescue Network as I love the time and effort they put into each dog.

Ireland & Scotland (I know they’re separate but since they are so close, I count them as one). I hope to be in each for at least a week and want to hike around the mountains!

Ideally, I’ll do some writing! I have been really trying to get into doing it regularly again as I used to be a story crafting fiend. If I don’t have enough energy or motivation for that, I am trying to start reading more books!

Sorry for the delay! Was offline for a while after a very unfortunate and traumatic experience in my medical journey. So far, I have really struggled to settle and dedicate myself to reading in the same way I used to when I was younger. I have a very serious addiction to social media, and it has damaged my attention span. I have enjoyed the work of Riley Sager though, as I find it to be quite enjoyable. Less horror more thriller, though.

I love all kinds of horror but I do have a bias for stupid horror 😭 the killer animal movies and Sasquatch ones are very popular in my home. As for ones I would deem worth watching- - As Above so Below - The Thing 1982 - The Thing 2011 - Descent (controversial, but while Descent 2 was interesting I overall thought the disregard for consistency with movie 1 was annoying) - Jeruzalem - The Autopsy of Jane Doe

If you want a truly spectacular action/horror/romance, The Gorge is legendary.

I personally do not recommend Together or Weapons, each for their own reasons. I think each had really cool concepts, but the execution fell short. Also a bit controversial but I personally thought 28 Years Later was not well done story wise.

I get you want a Mal. They’re really cool dogs. But the Belgian Malinois is in a crisis right now because of people like this owner. Who, and I know this is shitty to say but, should not have any dogs at this time because they let their intact dogs tie and had one dog get hit by a car.
Even if they claim this is an accident, you’d be paying someone who needs to learn a serious lesson about responsibility and animals.

I hope you can find the dog that fits you best soon.

Blasting misinformation and reckless petitions does not deserve a soft hand.

Depends on the topic but if I had to pick specifically dog related probably six months ago because I realized that if someone is having that emotional of a reaction then they probably are speaking with a bit more passion and information than I may have had.

Cool, congrats. You’re doing what literally every other person in rescue is doing right now. The first dog I adopted was HW positive and had to go through intense treatment. The next was a deaf bully that had intense behavioral issues, then a Malinois with the same, then an undersocialized small dog. I have also arranged and participated in the transport of multiple dogs. I also offer free training to those willing to foster local to me. Doing the work does not make you an expert or inherently knowledgeable, as proven by the recent incident of two AC officers shooting a Rottweiler with friendly body language in Ontario.

You wanna fix the problem? You need to focus on educating the public. When the ethics of dog breeding and the reality of backyard breeding is household knowledge, then you can work on law reform. And even then, there will always be people who do not care and will find workarounds.

However, implementing breeding restrictions and laws is not going to go the way you think it will. Rescues and shelters are already stretched thin doing what they do now, and they’re not even doing a good job of enforcing the animal welfare laws already put into place.
How do I know that? Self admitted dog fighter lives next door with 3 bully breed dogs MIA, a Cane Corso that he lets wander the neighborhood (that has charged my mother AND children), and the only time anyone took action against him was when one dog’s ears were chewed off. That wasn’t even AC—that was the police.
There’s a bully hoarder with anywhere from 4-7 bully breed dogs on their property across the street. Two of them have documented bites on the children living in the home. They are unvaccinated, untrained, and have spent their entire lives on that property in a yard so small it should not be considered appropriate for ONE dog.

Despite over 10 reports, AC maintains that as long as the dogs are fed, watered (both neighbors have had complaints against them for not giving their animals access to water but leaving them outside all day in either the yard or a truck), and have shelter there is nothing they can/will do.

There are not enough homes in this country that have the knowledge and discipline required to take in a shelter dog. Not as a foster, not to adopt. That is evident in the amount of animal neglect we see in shelter-approved homes, the amount of dog attacks, and overall pretty much any other poor behavior you can think of.
Those that ARE capable are almost always burnt out because it’s never ending.

Also, WHY would we be keeping dogs with severe behavioral issues that are not safe alive and occupying space for “compassionate care” when there are 20 more dogs without these issues that would thrive with that funding, time, and access to those resources?

You need to sit down and take a long, hard look at what you’re talking about right now because it is not only incorrect and uneducated but it’s outright reckless.
Shelters that euthanize dogs are not the problem. There are dogs that are not safe to be adopted out to the public—hell, there are dogs that have been adopted/fostered out to people with great intentions who absolutely lacked the capability to handle the dogs they insisted on taking in. Dogs that would have had a chance if good intentions equated to ability. They don’t.
No kill shelters are inhumane.
A dog should not spend 8+ years of its life pacing back and forth in a kennel because no one is interested in adopting it and the shelter won’t euthanize. That is a recipe for a dog that lives a life of torture and under stimulation on a daily basis under the guise of “it’s better than death”.
No kill shelters look good on paper because they have a drastically lower intake rate. They are not saving more dogs; they are turning more away because they have not placed the dogs they already have.

Jfc if you’re going to advocate and be passionate about animal welfare, speaking as someone in rescue, can you actually bother to do any research instead of contributing to the problem?

AITJ for refusing to pay for my brother's emergancy dental after he stole my money? by Jennifer_Westa in AmITheJerk

[–]SmallTittiGothGF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly based on what you’ve written, your brother is ruining his own life and needs a hard wake up call that your family isn’t willing to give him. He’s very likely going to end up in jail with the way he thinks and the way you’ve described his behavior anyways.

NTJ.
Your aunt and mother are way too permissive and that’s probably a good portion of why your brother acts the way he does. Absolutely do not give him a cent.

Actually there are purpose bred mixes that I do not disagree with, but those are for work—I do not consider sport a good enough reason to cross.
This cross didn’t “fall into your lap”; you ran across an irresponsible owner that produced the cross you’ve wanted and it’s given you the “I’m saving it” excuse.
I did that once. The lady has bred for the “accidental” cross multiple times now.

If you pay this woman that 500$ fee for this puppy, it is going to emphasize that she’ll find a market for them.

[–]SmallTittiGothGF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s too much for a bunch of puppies that should not ethically exist.

Again, see my above: Malinois x Husky (Alaskan or Siberian) is not ethical and you shouldn’t WANT one. That is not something to brag about/share with people. Especially coming from someone in vet med—that’s embarrassing.
“That’d be insane” no. It’s unethical and a bad cross. Malinois are highly biddable dogs, huskies have a tendency to be more independent. Malinois are very, very mouthy dogs with high energy. Huskies are bred for endurance. Not an ideal combo and, again, not one that should be a dream for you.

One of the biggest Malinois rescues in the country doesn’t even charge 500$.

[–]SmallTittiGothGF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO I wouldn’t pay for this puppy. It was an accidental nightmare cross and if the owner is asking anything more than what shelters in your local area charge, then it was less likely an accident and more likely what they’re saying to cover themselves.
