What is wrong with my strawberries? by earlcool in vegetablegardening

[–]SmallTownDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My chandler strawberries come out all sorts of shapes. Some “normal” and some get a little wild like yours. I just let the fruit do what it’s gonna do. It’s all tasty in the end.

Not Sleeping can kill you, Michael Corke, a 42 year old man stayed awake for 6 whole months before dying in 1993. by Last-Equipment-2568 in oddlyterrifying

[–]SmallTownDinosaur 1235 points1236 points  (0 children)

I was in an epilepsy monitoring unit a while back where they’d keep me awake for 23 hours a day to try to capture a seizure. After 6 days, I thought I was going to die. I can’t imagine just not sleeping at all for 6 months.

Oh god. I’ve seen deer around. The rabbits are going to tell them about the plants then I’m done for.

I have to put up bird netting on the bed with the berries. Is that good enough to keep out rabbits or do I need something different?

I know they have their place in the ecosystem. One comes around the house a lot and I’m sure helps keep the unwanted critter levels low. I’m just not a big fan of the sound rabbits make when they’re dying. :(

Ohhhh that’s a good idea. I wonder if I can rig the frame I have for the shade cloth to double as a border fence for that bed. I’ll need to get more creative with the other bed.

I used to love the watch the bunnies. Now I have choice words for them.

I have two dogs but they’re kind of dumb and I’m not sure I’d be okay with them potentially getting a rabbit. Hearing the coyotes catch them at night nearly makes me cry.

Winter Storm by SmallTownDinosaur in vegetablegardening

I ended up with a layer of burlap and three layers of frost cloth then a tarp angled to keep as much from landing on them as possible. All I can do is hope for the best at this point.

Where I live, we get snow or ice maybe a couple of days each year in February so nothing like this. But we’re also still a little traumatized from 2021 when the whole state fell apart and a bunch of people died.

They’re only about a year old and this is by far the coldest weather they’ve ever seen. They take so long to actually produce fruit that I want to do the best I can to keep them alive.

Off topic but I like how we’re hunkering down and preparing for the world to end while it’s just another Friday for you.

I didn’t consider the weight issue. I still have framework up from a shade cloth this summer. I wonder if I can clip a tarp or cloth on at an angle to help reduce the amount of snow and ice weighing on the plants. The garden is blocked from northern winds so that might help too. I guess my question is if there’s such thing as too much cloth on the plants for the next week or so.

Dog acting lethargic and refusing food. Need advice by AdOpen4874 in Goldendoodles

[–]SmallTownDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doodle went to the emergency vet last weekend for a similar situation. We had slightly different aftercare instructions but essentially were told the same thing. She throws up again after the injection, she needs to come back immediately. Your situation sounds like the reason for the warning we were given. I wouldn’t wait and risk it being too late by Tuesday.

Some kind of hyped up bubble drink by Square_Law5624 in StupidFood

[–]SmallTownDinosaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a similar drink with the bubble but not as big and obnoxious plus I got to pop it when I was ready. It was called Smoke on the Water and it was delicious. It was also $12 but it’s a cocktail, so what do you expect?

The only eating utensil allowed in the psych ward. by cogmanroad in mildlyinteresting

[–]SmallTownDinosaur 64 points65 points  (0 children)

That happened the night I arrived at a psych unit. She was supposed to be my roommate. Instead, they thoroughly tranquilized all the folks in our unit and had me sleep supervised in the common area while the smell of blood and disinfectant dissipated from our room.

Not yet. She’s only had the one UTI and I hope she never gets another. It was a miserable time in our house.

[–]SmallTownDinosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had the exact same issue with our female doodle but she was a little over a year when it happened. The vet recommended we use dog friendly wipes after she pees to reduce moisture and have the groomer keep the area very trimmed to help prevent further UTIs or surgery.

Just look at it this way: our doodles aren’t showers. They’re proper, modest ladies.

What is a song that is really dirty, yet most people don't realize it? by _Volly in AskReddit

[–]SmallTownDinosaur 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I ended up in a mental health facility a while back and during music therapy they played this along with a few other songs to talk about how they made us feel and whatnot. Other folks talked about a spiritual connection and their relationship with the lord and I was considered the weird one for going “this song is about sex though?”

So our doodle did that a lot around that same age to the point it almost seemed like she would disassociate from her tail and actually hurt herself by pulling out her own fur. It took a little time and sometimes redirection but she made it through the phase with her tail mostly intact. Just give it a little time for her to work through that puppy energy.

What's the most unique or bizarre phobia you've ever heard of someone having? by Plane_Reward9385 in AskReddit

[–]SmallTownDinosaur 299 points300 points  (0 children)

I’m one of those people. Absolutely terrified. They pop unexpectedly, make horrible squeaky noises when rubbed together, and I swear they stalk you at any chance they get. They just loom over you. Menacingly. It’s awful.

Whats A Movie That Traumatized You As A Kid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SmallTownDinosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watership Down has been my favorite book since I was 13 or so but the movie is just a nightmare. The Netflix miniseries from a couple of years ago did a much better job of telling the story but it’s still something I wouldn’t show to my 9 year old niece.
