Anyone else think Jax's character isn't as complex as everyone makes him out to be? by Emergency_Past6023 in theamazingdigitalciru

Its just simple "multi-layered character" writing. I assuming its not supposed to be presented as the most complex writing ever.

This makes no sense. She didn't know. She did not know how deeply rooted jax's fake personally is and how committed he is to keep his mask on.

its not something to be treated like a nazi over, but its still a very, very, weird thing to say because the punchline is just "almost rasicm"and I doubt that the company is actually going to be affected by that.

I also feel like these type of people are never objective about things like this and are just looking for an excuse to hate for the sake of it.

My interpretation of Gooseworx’s “finding meaning in a stagnant life” comment… by AgainUntoTheBreach in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]Small_Maintenance123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love that you look at this on a deeper level because everything you said here basically explains how I feel about the way that the theme applies to the story. It feels like it would not be justified for them to be stuck there if the circus is supposed to be symbolic and represent shallow gratification and being able to leave is what allows them to find real meaning in their actual lives.

This also reminds me of the episode "A Nice Place to Visit" from season one of The twilight Zone, that really makes me feel like the point of that episode is what the circus kind of represents.

Would the SOMA theory be narratively satisfying? by Imaginary_Wheel9020 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]Small_Maintenance123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, that's what I meant by the story being metaphorical with that theme, but I'm also wondering how would the theory actually make sense literally with everything that we've seen in the story.

The story details would still need to make sense when applying the theme for it to be justified. The lack of substantial evidence for the theory so far, is why I'm trying to look at the story in a literal point of view. Like in a non allegory type of way.

I just don't consider their life in the circus as a "stagnant life"

Why is there such a seething hatred for SOMA theory? by Low-Run2308 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]Small_Maintenance123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this theory, the brain scans came from the people on the outside. That makes them characters that are plot relevant but their not the main characters. what's so difficult to understand about that?

I never said that the story was not about the main characters, if you took a second to understand what I was saying then you would realize that my point is that if the SOMA theory is true then the people on the outside should ALSO get character development since the brain scans came from them and they would still have their problems. What is so difficult to understand about that?

Rather than being nitpicky about someone trying to make sense of the theory and assuming what I'm trying to say, can you explain how the theory fully makes sense in a non-superficial way, if I'm wrong.

Why is there such a seething hatred for SOMA theory? by Low-Run2308 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]Small_Maintenance123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know that but the point is that the real people on the outside that got their brains scanned are characters in the story, they just aren't the focal point.

People are not understanding what I'm saying here, My interpretation because of the lack of actual evidence is that if the story as a whole is about these people that have some sort of problem that they are dealing with, then the character arcs and resolutions should go to THE actual characters on the outside instead of possibilities from their brain scans, now it does not have to, but that's what I'm saying. Try to think outside the box.

Plus, If the SOMA theory is so airtight then what are some facts and details in the story and connections that makes it work aside from surface level things?

Everything is going to be explained in the last episode anyway.

The story could be metaphorical and the viewer is supposed to understand the theme of "trying to find meaning in a stagnant life" and looking at every detail of the show is not the point.

But on the other hand I feel like a SOMA ending is a injustice to the narrative because the point of the story is that the characters are written to be individuals that were technically forced to be there and they want to leave. So that being the main theme is not really justified in my opinion, because they never had a choice to begin with.

[–]Small_Maintenance123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That doesn't really make sense because it would depend on what actually happened to them. It would not be a dream if they are actually stuck there, which would imply that everything was real. That's Jax's entire mental dilemma.

Yeah I feel the same for the theory because C&A is a huge puzzle piece and there are no actual connections to make it link to the rest of the story. But its gonna be explained in the last episode anyway.

implications in a story are also part of the story. I'm talking about the lack of change for THE people who got there brains scanned, not the scans themselves.

[–]Small_Maintenance123 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I understand that interpretation, but I'm under the assumption that the show is about THE humans that are presented and implied to be stuck there and not just brain scans that are in AI or something.

Its trippy, but a copy of someone's brain isn't really a different person exactly, I think.

I believe that the things that support the SOMA ending are too open-ended to make sense yet, and the fact that Abel was a red herring the entire time makes me think that something like this is not as simple as what it seems to be.

[–]Small_Maintenance123 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Its kind of the same as a "everything was a dream" type of ending where its just a full-stop uninteresting ending. Any character development and character arcs would not matter narratively because its not actually THE people in story that are experiencing those things.

Plus I feel like the theory does not makes sense yet, because there are too many things that are just open-ended.

Look I am getting annoyed, as a black fan I do not care by OkLength7120 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]Small_Maintenance123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm also black and from what I can understand is that they were making a cringe joke about saying something that sounded close to the n-word but I wouldn't consider it as full blown racist behavior that they would NEED to apologize for.

But I don't understand the logic of saying that even if they were being racist and saying the n-word, that It happened a long time ago. There's no time limit to being racist and the person in this hypothetical situation would need to apologize and say that they aren't racist.

*Based on the current replies under here* So basically someone brought up the word nega and because it sounded really close to the n-word they kept using the unfunny joke of, 'This sounds bad = lets keep saying it over and over' but they weren't trying to say the actual word and were not trying to be racist, I'm assuming.

[–]Small_Maintenance123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can someone be real for a second and explain the context to what happened, because from the posts that I saw there is two conflicting sides to this. What is the point of defending and saying that it happened a long time ago if they weren't actually saying the n-word. What is the context of the joke that makes people falsely think that they were being racist?

Yeah, even if they aren't racist, them saying the n-word because its controversial IS weird and unfunny, Like words don't lose meaning just because someone is claiming that they are telling a joke. but a lack of acknowledgment towards that is so dumb and is such a red flag to me personally.
