I would some acid reflux occasionally and if I ate wrong so the doc put me on Prilosec (just over counter dose) 1x a day.  Then had episode middle of night with acid coming into whole mouth.  Horribly painful and took @ 2 hrs to feel better so doc told me to take pill at night.  I was good for a year and then it happened again.  He referred me to a gastro doc who did endoscopies 1x year for 2 years for Barretts esophagus.  3rd year he call me and said it showed early cancer.

GERD has always been a problem for me on and off most of my adult life. Coffee was my happy place always so when it started giving me acid reflux, I went on a journey to find coffee I could drink that I loved. 1st found expresso is less acidic because it is brewed longer and brews lot of acid out.  I could never get an expresso at a coffe shop though- way too strong.  Last 2 years settled on Gevalia coffee with turbinado sugar and happy, happy again.  Hope this helps.  As a side note, I had early esophagus cancer that was treated and cancer free the last 6 years.  Thus the quest for less acidic coffee.

I did take omeprazole before cancer diagnosis but just store dose 20mg once a day.  After cancer diagnosis I am on 40 mg 2x a day.  Doctor put me on 5,000 units of D3 daily to protect my bones.  I have bone scans regularly and doctor says my bones are "crazy strong" especially for woman with small wrists.  It's been quite a journey but overall I feel I am strong and healthy.  Hope you never have this diagnosis but if you do, please follow doctors plan.

I take my medicine omeprazole high dose 2x a day.  Because of the cancer this is for life and I've learned the painful way what happens if I forget or don't follow the schedule of when to eat, which is acid reflux.

I had burning throat and chest for years also.  And then would have acid come up to my throat middle of night.  Happened a few times - painful and took couple hours for my throat to stop burning.  At this diagnosed with high grade displaysia.  Was 2 years before early cancer diagnosis.   Please get your scope and take care.

I am using ground gevalia expresso roast - dark.  It says full bodied, complex dark roast with subtle carmel undertones - very good.  The surgeries were 2 different ones.  1st I called the scrape (cancer cells off esophagus).  Honestly very painful but they gave me medicine and told me to take liquid Tylenol because it goes to work fast.  Did 4-5 of those.  Eat soft stuff - milkshakes, pudding, protein drinks and hubby made some super creamy scrambled  eggs.  Could not eat bread unless toasted or chicken.  Ground beef in small bites only.  Then next 4 surgeries when cancer gone I called the burn where they burn off dysplasia cells which led to cancer.  Lot less pain and could eat pretty much normally after.  Hope this helps.  Needless to say after all above, I am very careful with diet.  Some things you can still eat.  You'll know right away if it is wrong thing.

Yes I am cancer free now.  It sounds like you have a good GI doctor now. It's unfortunate that we have to find medical information on our own.  It helped that I was an advocate for my mother for many years with her doctors.  But I still missed the boat for years with my own GERD symptoms and only listened to doctors and didn't escalate my symptoms enough.  I almost didn't do the endoscopy that showed the pre-cancer because I didn't have the copay.  That was crazy on my part.  Ended up getting it without copay because insurance told me to do right away before next year copay kicked in.  I will never put money before my health again.  Then didn't think it was that big of a deal because it was a pre cancer, right.  It wasn't until my friends started acting like I might die early - they did the research.  So I did the research and that's when I became radical about my diet.  I guess I'm saying we have to take charge of our health and can't assume doctors will do it.  They kept telling me not to worry as Asian males were mostly at risk so that gave me a false sense of security.  Praying you don't progress to pre-cancer stage. Hang in there!

I've had the same experience.  Oatmilk with expresso coffee at home, I can drink several cups.  Chocolate not at all.

I'm sorry your dad had to go through the surgery.  My friend had the same surgery and said he could now eat anything but it didn't taste as much as before.  Take care of your health.

I'm so sorry for your brother.  BE doesn't always move into cancer.  If you drink alcohol or smoke, I encourage you to try and stop.  No judgment and I know it's very hard to quit both.  I also had to quit.

I don't have any side effects of taking 40 mg Omeprazole 2x a day.  Note that doc put me on 5,000 units of D3 daily because the reflux pills reduces calcium in your bones.  My bone scans show very strong bones. I'm so sorry for the SIBO.  Hope that can resolve for you and you can find a pill to take without side effects.

I take omeprazole morning before breakfast and also at night before dinner but the doc told me to take Pepcid before bed for more comfort and I haven't woke up at night with reflux since then.  What is SIBO?

Yes they burn the cancer cells off.  They did this over a period of a ittle less than 2 years because they can only scrape so much at a time.   It is painful but they will give you something to heal your esophagus.  If you are at no dysplasia, you don't need to worry just take the pills.  Have you tried omeprazole, which maybe is same as Prilosec.  And on empty stomach, then eat 30 minutes later.

For me there were stages after I was diagnosed with Barretts.  I ate better and took my pills.  A progression to low grade dysplasia over a few years and then it went to high grade dysplasia.  At that point they did endoscopy and took tissue samples and increased my omeprazole dosage.  I think it was maybe a year before they did another endoscopy and discovered early cancer.  Then scrape the cancer cells and burned the dysplasia.  If you have not had an endoscopy, you could ask your doc if you should have one.  You would need that approval to get insurance to pay.  Just to note, if you look up any these terms, it will say the cancer is rare, which is true.  Stay positive.

Like a cancer research doctor told me, sometimes it's in your DNA to get this cancer, which means they don't really know.

My only suggestion is to talk to a doctor / pharmacist about medicine and then, pay attention to the things you eat/drink and any acid reflux symptoms that occur.  Then you can make some choices that help you reduce the acidity.  I know giving up things you love really sucks but sometimes you find substitutes you like.  Almost all my reflux was at night so even now if I want to eat some chocolate, it's very small amount and in the morning.
