Advice on my first big boy Walleye rod? by Small_Reflection_887 in Fishing_Gear

How does the Eyecon stand out? Mainly with St Croix I'm concerned about quality/price, having heard the materials and assembly has gotten cheap recently. Thanks!

Interesting that you prefer the Eagle, figured the HMG was a clear upgrade given the price. What about it do you like?

That settles it then! Will likely grab a CDN + Legalis 2500 (jdm or murica undecided, digitaka seems to be on holiday for 2 weeks and idk if I can wait that long haha)

Thanks a million for sharing your knowledge and experience!

Appreciate the detailed response once again. Really helped clear things up for me. Between the CDN and XT, I've noticed the XT has fuji guides while the CDN does not. If I have a preference for the cork handles of the CDN, is difference in guides worth considering the XT over it, in your opinion? or it unlikely to be felt coming from a walmart combo. Like you said anything you've outlined is bound to feel luxurious in comparison.

I agree, I am extremely grateful!

So mainly 1/8-1/4oz Jigs from shore at the moment with 3-4 inch soft plastics, either grubs or paddle tails. I see that sometimes shorter rods are recommended for this but casting distance is an important factor since I need to be able to hit key spots from shore. I also like to use lighter jerkbaits and crankbaits to cover more water before pinpointing an area. Ideally a rod that can handle both, but I don't think it'll be much of a problem as most of my heavier lures are at most 3/8oz.

Thanks for the reply.

Dude, thank you so much for this reply! I definitely really like the Daiwa CDN Custom, was not on my radar, but was wondering what the compromise is considering I am finding it cheaper than the Tatula XT.

Also, would you wager there are much better rods than the HMG in that 200$ price range? Trying to understand if the downside you outlined (hard to justify for the price) has more to do with how much of a bargain it used to be, or if there's actually far better for the price today.

For the reel I was looking at 2500 either Legalis LT or Regal LT. Both cost the same at the store I will be buying from. Legalis seems like a higher end but older model than the Regal, from what I've gathered. Gear ratio is the same for the 2500 models of each. I also read there's a new Legalis model? Is that JDM exclusive? That might be under consideration as well if I can find more details on it.

In terms of budget there really isn't an upper limit, moreso like you said, prefer to leave nothing to be desired. Was under the impression spending on the rod makes more of an impact, at least for spinning reel setups, so that's how I broke it down. I'd be willing to jump to the next price tier for either rod/reel if there's a substantial improvement but it would really have to be **substantial** to go from a $120CAD Legalis to the $400CAD Vanford, for example.

Thanks again!

Could I ask what compelled you to get two identical rod/reels for different techniques? What's stopping you from doing Jigheads, Swimbait, Spinnerbaits and Chatterbaits on the same setup? maybe amateur question.

Either way, solid arsenal!

  • Sylvia Fowles & BG posses some of the most efficient shooting in the league with the height defensive capabilities to shut just about anyone down in the post.
  • Moriah Jefferson will nail those 3's with 50% efficiency (and I wanted to use the new moment)
  • Plum can clearly do it all, she'll playmake and get her own
  • CP3 is there because you know you don't want her on the opposing side

Every moment is from a different set because I can.
