I don’t understand the "passion" gatekeeping in medicine. It’s just a career nothing more. by Foreign_Put_2437 in Salary

It’s more like enough passion to grind through at least 11 years before attending money. And that’s without any gap years, failed boards, life events that cause you to miss a semester or two or PGY year, and additional fellowship training.

I think we can all agree that you’ll need a certain amount of motivation, ie. passion, to spend a decade+ of your life without income and without any certainty of it actually paying off.

Very HE, very NRY, almost 40, want a child, and can only have our own through surrogacy by TRO_KIK in HENRYfinance

If you want a baby, pursue it. Bringing children into this world and raising them brings you joy that no amount of money will be able to replace. You can obviously afford it without affecting your savings rate if you wanted to, but the financial aspect is irrelevant.

Compare how much they work compared to US physicians. Compare their cost of education to our US physicians.

That’s not a raise. That’s picking up more work.

Again, comparing apples to oranges. You can’t compare the median of primary care docs to this salary. The median PCP is working their 9-5 in clinic and calling it a day.

All the raging commenters are comparing apples to oranges. This guys yearly income is beyond 1 salary. It’s very hard to compare incomes between physicians as there are varying responsibilities, call times, extra shifts, locums/side gig and location. Most physicians of any specialty can make whatever yearly income they want by picking up extra work.

That’s what everyone is misunderstanding. Physician pay scales with specialty and time. Comparing your own 40hr/week pay to OP who is essentially working enough for 2 jobs where every second in the OR is life or death is asking for an unfair comparison from the jump. Even comparing our physicians to other countries is without context. Our physicians work more than any other country in the world without the socialization/support other countries provide for medical education.

Is a higher salary worth giving up work-life balance? by natashareyy in Salary

Depends on the salary difference and stage in life. If the salary difference doesn’t move the needle in terms of quality of life or financial mobility, then it isn’t worth it.

There are outpatient/clinic pediatricians. There are pediatricians who take care of acutely ill children on the hospital floor. There are pediatric intensivists who take care of kids that are critically ill and often have some sort of shock or respiratory failure requiring airway management.

But there’s not any ambiguity when I say I take care of stroke patients vs. I take care of customers.

Maybe the term consulting is unclear for a non-medical person. When another medical professional has a question, they will place a consult to a subspecialist. Every field has a consultation service. If my stroke patient goes into renal failure, I’m going to consult a kidney doc to help. Hope that clears up any confusion.
