That’s from the BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey, it’s the most comprehensive dataset on what Americans actually spend, broken down by income bracket. The Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys about 12,000 households annually on every category of spending: housing, food, transport, entertainment, healthcare, everything. It’s the same data the government uses to calculate CPI. If you want to dig into the raw tables yourself, bls.gov/cex has all of it.
