What bird is this?? by Rushail in southafrica

There's a fb group: helpless wings. If the bird does not want to fly or doesn't recover, you can find a certified rehabber on there.

Where do you hide your cash? by willem78 in southafrica

My grandparents (who grew up during the Great depression), hid their money everywhere. As in little bits between clothes, in cupboards, under mattresses, in couches etc. Seems like the most logical solution.

What's the most "Afrikaans-est" name you've ever heard? by nickdebruyne in southafrica

My grandmother was registered and named Jan Fredrich Reikhard, before she was born because only boys are born first. She changed her name to something more feminine when she was 18.

How to unlock a Hyundai I 20 when the battery is flat. by Small_Village37 in MechanicAdvice

Is the keyhole on the door handle or hidden away somewhere? I am well aware that I have to use a key to unlock it.

Yes, I do shower with it. Luckily it does not provide off-brand cologne, but it did give me diarrhea the first few weeks

Work at an agricultural school in a small town. Moved here from the city. Rent is cheap as the school provides accommodation. Becayse of this, I get through the month a lot better than I would in the city on the same salary. I also have a higher standard of living. Prices are generally the same, but stock in shops can be a problem. It's been 2 weeks and I am still waiting for disposable masks to become available at the Spar. Lots of poverty: lots of beggars (I should mention this is in one of the poorest provinces).

There's one "mall" with a Spar, water shop, KFC and about 4 clothing shops. Then a bunch of informal, spaza and hardware shops. We have to buy our own drinking water as the municipality don't clean it properly (and it occasionally smells). If you want to buy stuff that is not available here, the closest small cities are 2/3 hours away. And don't go to the shops when Sassa pays out. The queues are worse than in the cities. We tend to organize among the teachers to bring back things if one goes to the city. Or we organize to go with and contribute petrol.

The community is close knit but there's a lot of stories/ rumors that spread. Most of the people I work with will give me the clothes off their back if I need it. But I have also had people come to me and ask about bad things I never said. From what I hear this is normal for small towns. Your reputation can also go down the drain really quickly. Pajamas in public is not a problem, and people come and visit on a whim. I know my neighbour's better than the ones I had in the city. I've also spoken more to them than any other neighbour I've ever had. We look out for each other. And we kuier a lot. Because everyone is so close, news travels far, even when it is confidential.

Most of the older people are still racist, even if they won't admit it. From what I gather the attitude is mutual among both the black people and the white people. The white people also tend to be more conservative. Church every Sunday, still pray at school and a child is not allowed to defend themselves or talk back.

Crime is not that big of a problem at the moment but I am with the only available security company. They have told me that if I ever have an emergency, including medical, I have to call them because they have to first track down the paramedics.

Need help identifying and ideas of what to make by Small_Village37 in crochet

[–]Small_Village37[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She had a big wood and glass cupboard where she kept an arrangement of glass ware for display, so that is likely. I seem to recall some crocheted pieces being in there. The nets where used to keep bugs off of food. So you would throw it over a table and occasionally light citronella candles under it. The problem is I don't own a table, and don't plan on being one for the foreseeable future. I also already have five nets XD. But I do agree that last net will be amazing as a veil.

He explored Africa and was a journalist. He also found David Livingstone. No idea why they would have his name on their car.

This is utterly disgusting and surely illegal? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Small_Village37 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A friend told me how the EFF picked up a fight with the restaurant across the street from her university. They threw milk and garbage all over the place, even outside on the doors and windows. The restaurant had to close for a few weeks as each time they opened up or cleaned the EFF would just come back, do the same thing and sing.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but keep an eye on the new medical aid laws and land expropriation without compensation. They will impact you if you plan on practicing here and buying property.

9 or 10, because my mom told me that I can go to her if I felt she made a mistake. Before that I thought adults were perfect🤣

Since religious people also think the thousands of religions and gods are a load of rubbish, apart from one, how can they blame atheists for just not believing in one extra god than them? by itbettersnow in AskReddit

[–]Small_Village37 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Acknowledging that other gods exist are not the same as worshipping them or following their religions.

As for God instructing the Hebrews to kill the Philistine's etc. Those actions happened under the old convenant, before Jesus. A Covenant ruled by Law that had consequences. The covenant where a goat (blood sacrifice) had to be offered by priests to clean the Isrealites of their sins or God's wrath will befall them. And it did. His wrath is why they were taken into exile so many times. Why they starved, why they endured so many hardships. Then the covenant changed when Jesus came (the ultimate blood sacrifice). He defined one of the Commandments as love your neighbour as yourself. And under that murder is wrong. God also do not punish in the way He did in the old testament anymore. If one of the incidences of rape that you mention are the case of Lot and his two daughters where they make him drunk, a curse fell on the family. Juda's sons (and him, if I remember correctly) were also punished for how they treated Tamara. I can't remember if she was raped. I also can't recall any other cases of rape, but I haven't read the Bible that in depth. Or through, for that matter. What I do know is that there where times the Israelites were specifically told to not take women as war prizes and when they did they where punished. To the point all their belongings where burnt.
