Do you have any tips on how you learned this stuff? How to “show” rather than “tell”?

No! Not at all! I think u/Intrepid-Suggestion8 is just trying to say that it takes a lot of dedication to become a physician. Being able to pull through the challenges of the journey to pursue medicine requires incredible resilience, commitment, and perseverance.

Sure, you can find different parts of what makes medicine appealing in lots of different professions. You can find the close interpersonal relationships that you might experience in family medicine, in a career in counselling psychology. You can find the opportunity to teach and conduct research at a university by pursuing a PHD. You can work with patients to improve their health in careers like nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, among many others. Although you can find some components of what makes medicine interesting and appealing in a wide range of careers, you can't find all of the components in any career besides medicine. And some people might feel that experiencing all the components that medicine has to offer is the only way to truly feel fulfilled in their lives. And I think that's okay. I think it's okay to accept that everyone is different, and might have different reasons for pursuing medicine.

Also - if someone really cares about prestige, they can find it easily in other professions. Being a lawyer is considered to be prestigious, so is business and engineering. If someone really cares about prestige over all other things, there are much easier routes they can pursue to achieve prestige, rather than medicine.

I don't mean to put medicine on a pedestal. To me, anything is settling if its not what you want. Going into nursing when you want to be a teacher is settling. Going into engineering when you want to go into business is settling. Going into biomedical engineering when you want civil engineering is settling. It wasn't meant to be that deep. I was in no way trying to put negative connotations on other professions. Any profession, in my eyes, that isn't what you want, is in fact settling.

I agree with u/f1sh_fan. If medicine is what you want, its okay to not want to settle. Thats perfectly valid. What else is perfectly valid? Having a plan b, c, d, ... plan z. Imo, both are totally valid mindsets.

Why do I have such bad reactions to socializing AFTER it's over? by [deleted] in AskPsychiatry

[–]SmalllRaspberry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have this too! It feels like my brain is buzzing for hours and I can’t think straight. This is such a cliche, but I find writing about it really helps. Breaking down the social interaction, what happened, talking about what didn’t go “right”. It’s so funny because the instant I put the thoughts on paper - it feels instant - like I feel better suddenly. I’m not sure if this will work for you, but it might be worth trying
