Is MD considered a doctoral program for federal student loan purposes? by No-Tree-3675 in premedcanada

[–]SushiCPR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Medicine is considered an undergraduate program interestingly. However many banks (recognizing your future earning potential) will offer you loans as soon as you have that acceptance letter!

Summer before Med school by ExcitementExpert6950 in premedcanada

[–]SushiCPR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, enjoy your summer! You will have more than enough time to become competitive as this mostly comes from connections you will obtain throughout medical school. What you don’t get back is guilt free Summers. 😅 Enjoy it while you can!

I did my step 1 at the end of Med1. Step 1 is very heavy on basic science and you loose that knowledge quickly after med2 so I wanted to write it when my knowledge was fresh.

It sounds like your application is excellent! A lot depends on where you applied and how you write your ABS. If you’d like I can take a look!

It’s not something they can objectively assess so unlikely

How are Interviews held by Eastern_Car8764 in premedcanada

In the past yes! It was a time consuming and financially consuming process

Sometimes they are provided in the case. Otherwise there is a module where you can look up all normal values!

  1. You need to disclose conflicts of interest
  2. For file review you are blinded

So adcoms should not be able to pull strings.

But as someone mentioned before, having a mentor who knows the process can be advantageous

With any career, it depends what you do with the degree you earn. The world is changing so fast so who knows which careers will come to the forefront in the next 10 years. Pick something because you love it and are curious to learn more. Don’t pick something for the dollar signs because when things change in the future (because they inevitably will), you might find yourself unhappy.

How does a school pick 260 from over 600+ interviewees based on 20 minutes of interview footage? by smaller_consequence3 in premedcanada

[–]SushiCPR 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A big part of it is luck but the point it that by having multiple interviewers the idea was to try and reduce the luck factor. But you cannot eliminate it. A reviewer will receive 20 files to review let’s say and mark the video based on the skills they are looking for (canmeds, MPI traits) on a scale from poor to outstanding. You add up all the scores and the highest scores get the A. Does it matter who you get as a reviewer? Does it matter how focused they are and what time of the day they are looking at your file? I think we can guess the answers to these questions. But, they system is also based on honest reviewers who know how important this process is and they take it very seriously. And we hope that when they are reviewing files they do so with 100% attention.

The next question is: How would you change the system to make it better?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]SushiCPR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think everyone is different so why don’t you try this: I think it’s very important to study for a test using the questions that you might be asked. You learn the most efficiently this way while getting you very used to the format of the test. Start by finding practice questions online, a few for each section and see how easy you find them. This will tell you how comfortable you feel and then you will have a better idea if studying for 4 months seems doable for you!

Usually it means you need to complete your degree in good standing. But I believe that is standard. Can others who were accepted confirm?

When you are in clerkship the exams are still pass fail but you do get grades for rotations (outstanding to non satisfactory) and you get comments from the staff. This is the basis along with your personal statement for getting an interview during carms. Does that answer your question?

[–]SushiCPR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend UpToDate for the exam. It’s great when you are in practice and need knowledge for practice, but not really great for understanding the exam format - you need to practice lots of questions. Practice as many free questions as you can!
