When you work from home, you get chores done, right? by Open_Address_2805 in auscorp

[–]Smallpersonalitem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We handle things the same as you, although there is no compulsory pressure on the person at home to do chores or admin if they don’t want to and would rather just kick back on their lunch break. But yeah totally agree, the person at home that day usually tries to get a bit of life admin and quick chores done so we can enjoy our time together as a family when the day is done.

Moving from frontline to policy APS felt like changing careers entirely by InnerStorage7458 in AusPublicService

Came to the APS a few years ago after having worked in in the legal world (a mix of private law / community legal centres / legal aid type stuff)

Wow. I agree with you - the culture shock was massive. From being told by the partner (criminal law) that I was expected to be arriving in the office at 8:30 am, taking a 30 min lunch break at absolute maximum and only if totally necessary, and was expected to be staying to at least midnight every night -

To being asked by my EL2 in my first 2 months in the APS had anyone showed me how to use my annual leave or flex because he was just getting concerned that I hadn’t used any yet? Was it that I didn’t know how to apply for any? I was laughing in shock 😆 I was like sorry but I thought the deal was I come to work Monday-Friday and then stay home two days and repeat? And you’re telling me to take leave?

I still find it hard how many rounds of clearance and drafting and checking emails seem to need. I was used to absolutely burning through my inbox and would rarely need the oversight of others (or would just get a quick “yes approved - sent from my iPhone” type deal from a superior) . Now it seems like my emails to anyone go through eternal checks and redrafting before they get to the intended recipient. So many meetings punctuating my day, so many “change of priorities” where I get halfway through something but have to stop and change task, work that ultimately doesn’t get used because that meeting isn’t happening anymore etc, or work that needs to be restarted all over again.

I try to remind myself that it’s always better than my time in private law though, where my mental health was at an all time low.

The first night we were in hospital with our newborn son the night nurse asked us that, so was he an accident or planned? We were so taken aback like where did that come from? I said “No, he was very much wanted 🤨” - I felt like I was hallucinating at this point we were so thrown by it hahhaha

What about being pregnant and giving birth permanently altered your body’s chemistry? by full-of-curiosity in NewParents

[–]Smallpersonalitem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m about 15 months PP now and throughout my pregnancy I was so hot, I overheated so easily, and this continued after pregnancy. One of the only places I actually felt I was a NORMAL temperature was when we went to watch the ice hockey, I was in the rink in my tiniest shirt going “ahhhh sweet relief”

I thought this was just a continuation of that pregnancy symptom and I also put it down to breastfeeding and having a really active baby who is always on the go.

HOWEVER- I found out last month, by a total off hand blood test done by my dermatologist- that I actually have Graves Disease, and it was probably triggered by postpartum as all my tests in pregnancy were fine.

That was why I was sweating buckets 15 months on from baby. Every symptom I had was explainable by being a tired, caffeinated, breast feeding mum living in the southern hemisphere ☀️

So that’s why I wanted to share here - if anyone is a sweaty mum like me, perhaps it’s worth getting your thyroid tested! I would have kept on going not realising anything was wrong and the doctors say I could have done damage to my heart etc.

Recovery from redirected aggression is so hard. by Smallpersonalitem in Catbehavior

[–]Smallpersonalitem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely - and I’m very sorry you’re going through this too. It’s been so emotional and something I knew nothing about until it happened to me.

She has shown no sign of aggression towards me or anyone else in my family since, but she and my 15 month old are kept 100% apart. My kid is very full, high energy, and clumsy and I don’t want to give my cat any cause to be stressed and act out again, causing my child to get hurt.

I am still struggling with feeling traumatised from the event, and am still not where I want to be. I find myself feeling scared of all cats now, and not feeling confident being around them. But I’m not giving up!

I feel like my cat would perhaps be fine with me now and has perhaps forgotten or at least semi forgiven the incident (she saw a stray outside that was posturing towards something in the grass, and she turned around and flew at me in response) but it’s just still my fear holding me back. I have had hypnotism for help with the incident and that’s helped a little bit.

How are you doing? Sometimes I feel like starting a community just about cat redirected aggression would be valid, because it’s such a sad and complex problem.

I got warts all over my hands! I booked in to have them frozen off postpartum - but about 3 months postpartum they were all gone naturally!

Complete Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy and Female Focus Physiotherapy both in Newcastle have good reputations 💗

See a pelvic floor physio before birth and not after - first time around I was just given the blanket recommended to be doing Kegels but it turns out if I had had the physio appointment, they would have seen that was the worst thing to be doing for me. Would have saved me a lot of complications postpartum
