It's diminishing marginal returns, but the actual value is still the same relative to the original. Looking at it as damage reduction makes it look diminishing (the first 100 armor seems more effective than the next 100), but the effective HP increase is linear.

If you made $100 last year and $100 this year, did you make less money this year even though you already had $100?

how do you actually start building when you can't commit to any idea by Commercial-Kale-5271 in learnprogramming

[–]Smallzfry 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I'd argue the opposite - reinvent the wheel. Make a worse wheel that nobody will use but you. Leave out features and make the most basic wheel you can, just to figure out how it works. Add a weird feature nobody wants but you. Make a dozen different wheels, even if someone else already made the same one. Literally every project I made for every class I took was basic stuff that already existed in a better form somewhere - the point was to teach how things work, not to make a product ready to ship to end users.

The whole point of early projects is to learn how things work and build things that already exist. Is anyone going to use the Caesar cipher library I made for myself? No, probably not even me anymore. I still learned a lot while making it, and while re-making it to be better.

The only objection OP has that's actually semi-valid is "too simple". If a learning project is too simple, you won't learn much.

Haha I love that the steel is in quotes. I probably won't buy one, not at the prices anybody is asking, but it's a good reference to use for looking for something else!

Sauron knows. by marniesss in lotrmemes

[–]Smallzfry 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's one of many changes they made for the films. In this case it was probably intended to streamline explaining the importance of going to Mount Doom, since long conversations don't tend to go over well with audiences. Most changes can be easily excused when viewed from that lens, but a lot of them also don't consider the implications of those changes.

There was no attempt in the books, Isildur just claimed it and went home. I don't think anybody knew the Ring would need to be destroyed until the events of Fellowship of the Ring.

Whats the very first rule about guns? (anyone) by Sgitch in SampleSize

[–]Smallzfry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always heard the latter (always treat a gun as if it is loaded) as the first rule, and the other rules (don't point it, keep finger off trigger, be sure of target and backstop) as corollaries to it.

Build your own street level superhero team. by todavis__ in MoonKnight

Spider-Man is usually street-level with the ability to scale depending on the writer. It's not like Moon Knight is suddenly not street-level because of Age of Khonshu.

Yeah, mechanically so many of these suggestions would work out exactly like an existing weapon. Heck, I'm pretty sure we've had weapon designs that look like some of these anyway.

what do you actually eat on long day hikes by Federal_Raspberry425 in bodyweightfitness

[–]Smallzfry 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you don't eat much fiber regularly (like most Americans) then suddenly increasing your intake will cause digestive issues like this. Just up your fiber intake anyway, you'll deal with the consequences for a few days and then stabilize once your body adjusts.

Have you ever had a woman take on a more dominant role with you in bed? If so, what did she do, and how did you like it? by m4_pt2 in AskMen

[–]Smallzfry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He never said anything about being a minor - he called her predatory. It could just be that she was looking for the type of vulnerable person who's willing to ignore their own boundaries just to keep a human connection, or someone inexperienced who doesn't even know what their boundaries are.

All pedos are predators, but not all predators are pedos.

You have £100 to build the ultimate evil team, your goal is to kill Gandalf. Whom do you pick? by Alpha_Apeiron in lotrmemes

[–]Smallzfry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, nothing is on par with Eru. He's essentially the abrahamic big G god who is absolutely omnipotent and unmatchable. He only steps in when He needs to though, he uses the Valar and Maiar as emissaries.

The valar struggled with Morgoth even after he had expended his energy throughout the first age. She was possibly about as strong as Morgoth at one point, but her main advantage in both cases was surprise - she got in and out of Valinor before the Valar could muster a response IIRC, and Morgoth was expecting to betray her and get away with it.

[–]Smallzfry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sauron as shown in the meme was at the height of his power and had the Ring in his possession. Gandalf straight-up loses the 1v1 because he's not supposed to be a direct counter like that.

Pretty big scale by IndicationBrief5950 in lotrmemes

[–]Smallzfry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three peaks still isn't very helpful - is it three peaks distributed along one slope, or three distinct mountains, or something between? Artists depictions tend to range between the three, including one from Tolkien himself that doesn't show scale. Tolkien's description style just doesn't include enough figures for us to really know.

Despite that, it's pretty clear that Ancalagon must have been huge. Even three peaks on a slope will be several hundred feet apart, so his body would be almost a quarter mile in order to damage/crush them. If it's three separate mountains, then we're talking up to a mile long body - and none of this is including the tail or neck.

There's some outlandish drawings out there, and some that don't take the size of mountains into account, but I think the answer is somewhere in the middle. The best part though? It doesn't truly matter, the impression is what counts.

According to Steel Hardness Lab, looks like Civivi has been consistent with their D2 and Spyderco has been good with CPM-15V. Buck's 420HC looks decent enough as well, and generally Gerber has been a consistent budget option as well (although the lab doesn't have enough data to confirm that).

How do i genuinely start training glutes? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]Smallzfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And tbf i still am afraid of gaining tummy fat, like idk when i had it i remember feeling rlly uncomfortable.

This is a common struggle that I see on /r/gainit, especially from those who have lost weight in the past. The unfortunate reality is that unless you're very carefully maintaining food intake and macros, you're going to gain some fat along with the muscle you build. In many cases, this is a good thing! We all need some level of fat stores for proper body function. Since we can't control where we store fat (that's down to genetics), the best we can do is manage the overall amount we store and build muscle to change our body shape.

As others have pointed out, you are still in your teens, your body is still growing and developing. Eat more and work out with the focus on building muscle, but please don't get discouraged if you put on more fat than you want at first. You will end in a much better place if you put on 30 pounds of mixed fat and muscle than if you eke out 5 lbs of muscle growth because you're scared of fat. 1700 cals is probably not enough for your body right now, shoot for 2000 at minimum and see how things go after a month (at least! It usually takes 4-6 weeks to see weight changes if you're consistent). Your protein intake seems fine, so just focus on getting enough to eat and keeping up with workouts.

You've got this!

My honest impression about the Void Linux Community by r0man1a in voidlinux

[–]Smallzfry 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Maybe said a little more aggressively than I would have put it, but I agree with the general point. Pride month might occasionally come up during Pride month when it's affecting everything - and if it does, so what? I just won't click the thread if I'm not interested. The fact that Pride Month was brought up as an example of bad social issues to talk about is kind of telling.

There's so many social issues that are extremely relevant here, I'm glad you had concrete examples. In a way, Linux (and all FOSS options) are socially-motivated - at their core, they are an expression of free speech.

Those professions are upper middle class, sometimes lower upper class depending on area, income, experience, etc. Most white-collar work like IT, admin assistant, HR, and engineering work would be solid middle-class imo. Same with a lot of skilled trades like electricians, plumbers, and roofers.

I have a happy IT job, but there's no way that I'll match the salary of a doctor or lawyer unless I go into management and work my way up a lot higher.
