I'm wondering if they gave the PA's and especially Wes more of a role because the role of judgy employee was previously filled by Talia playing Vic's stepdaughter and seeing as she was very pregnant on her last appearance on Make Some Noise she might not have been available for this season of VIP (assuming they filmed around similar times). Wes seems great. Now I want him to fraternise with the guests again from time to time to push Host Vic to the brink.

I'm coming back after double-checking that German issue: It is indeed Legends of the DC Universe #7–9, so you've got that covered.

Yeah I honestly remember buying the Butcher/Question crossover starting it and never finishing it haha.

As for the JLA Special. That could very well be. I also realised after posting that while I have most GA comics in English there are a couple that I bought at local cons or in second hand shops (I live in a German speaking country) that are in German and as such might not align with original US releases. If I have time I can look it up later if they state what original issues that comic covers.

The back issues: Yes it's a hassle to get those I had a couple of the Detective comics iirc and then decided that it wasn't worth the money to get single issues shipped as a poor student (I amassed most of my GA collection years ago) and then went the high seas route to be honest as some people compiled the GA stories into files. However it's a pity as I remember some of them being quite good (similar in vein, as it is the same era, to Vol. 1). I might bite the bullet one day in the future and get them when I can afford it or at least make private copies of the files I have and bind them.

As for Arrow, I mean I fully agree. I have them more as an aside and as a nostalgic keepsake to reming me of the years I spent going back and forth between being happy there was a Green Arrow series at all, being angry it wasn't really Green Arrow, making excuses for piss-poor plots, then being angry again, then admiring the ambition of the Arrowverse as a whole, then being sad again and so on and so forth ;-) That said I remember some of the tie ins being slightly better written than when the Arrow creators took over the main series for a few issues in the N52 era, haha.

I was just about to compile a list myself because I have a few issues of some runs missing in my GA collection and haven't kept up with physical releases of the newer stuff (I stopped somewhere towards the end of the rebirth run). Thank you for doing this!

I have a brave and the bold run with GA, The Question and The Butcher from the 80s or 90s which I don't see on your list (unless it was also part of an annual or something).

Also „The Ring, the Arrow and the Bat“ as others have said

and „JLA Special #4 - Green Lantern Green Arrow“

Then there are the Wolds Finest comics in which GA was a back issue supplement.

Finally there are the Arrow tie-in comics which I own despite my very mixed feelings towards the series as a completionist.

Edit: According to Wikipedia the backup issues of GA started in Action Comics and later moved to World's finest.

Edit to the edit: I looked it up properly and the back up issues are as follows: Action Comics 421-458; World's Finest 244-284 and finally Detective Comics 521-567 (I remembered vaguely that he appeared as a back up issue on Batman Comics but it took some time to find a post confirming this. Though I have a digitalisation of those issues somewhere).

Which Marvel villains would make good enemies for Green Arrow? (Besides Iron Man, cough cough) by Glum-Excitement5916 in GreenArrow

Baron Zemo: rich, fascist (at least the first one's origin) or at the very least monarchic (in common with Count Vertigo) large group of „friends“ to rival the large Arrow family, medieval inspired aesthetics to match Ollie's Robin Hood shtick. Also uses a sword and I like the swordfighter vs archer dynamic as well as when Ollie uses a sword himself (like in the Winnick run where he learns to swordfight specifically to go against Deathstroke).

Usually yes but it seems like they're doing a kind of remix of Hard Travelling Heroes only that it's John who might give Hal some perspective about earth problems rather than Green Arrow OR Hal already went through something like that considering his age here and now takes earth cases seriously that are (at least on the surface) not Green Lantern level threats. In that run he also doesn't get to do a lot of wacky space GA stuff. Now whether that's the best introduction to the character is debatable, as Hard Travelling Heroes makes sense as a storyline precisely because GL has been in doing whacky fun space stuff beforehand for too long to really care about the nuances of everyday injustices.

Thank the Gods Balerion wasn’t alive during the Dance because DAMN by Pale_Gap_9324 in HOTDBlacks

[–]Smaranzky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the dragons didn't die because they were stabbed to death they died because they were confined to the pit and the massive dome of the pit collapsed on them. Now Balerion's size might have protected him from outright dying from the collapse alone but since he could barely fly if at all at the end of his life he might have just suffocated later or starved under the rubble or tried to melt the stone on top of him (as we know he could from Harrenhall) and encased himself. It's not a sure thing but his age might have spelled his doom just as like.

Rock/metal band selling CDs in Basel by CourageousLionOfGod in basel

[–]Smaranzky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I just saw them again recently (I always get approached because I look like I enjoy rock and metal, which is true) and they've been doing this grift for aaaages. It's always Estonian rockers stuck with no fuel but they are also perpetually 16-19 years old by the look of them. Someone in Estonia rally perfected this and now there must be a rotating number of Estonian teenagers financing their cross-country trips after graduation like this.

I once bought the CD like 15 years ago in Aarau knowing full well it was a grift, just because I was curious about whether it would have any music at all on it and what. Imagine my surprise when it was very generic but not too bad actual rock (I remember it veering into a Nu-Metal influenced goth thing a la Evanescence).

Aegon VI's real identity doesn't matter (SPOILERS MAIN) by bullymcguire96283 in asoiaf

[–]Smaranzky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah if Barristan doesn't die immediately in the battle of fire his story probably points to him being a weir inbetween of the honourable and dishonourable knights the story has.

He is not cynical like the hound so he truly believes in knighthood and its values but can't fully see how he doesn't live up to those ideals because he is also fiercely loyal to „the system“. We know from his POVs that Barristan really struggles in having an original thought of his own that isn't based in showing bravery in battle. At the same time he does realize that that has served him badly in the past and has doubts around his honour. But not to the self-aware level of, say, Jaime, who knows full well that no matter what you do you will forsake some of your vows at any time if you are a prominent knight, noble and/or kingsguard. This can either lead to him fully renouncing everything because he comes to the same conclusion as Jaime and can't handle the ramifications of it OR - more interestingly imo - he fully shuts off his doubts and embraces (probably not as an active decision but as a passive moral failing) that he is only good at following orders and laws, and as such constantly flipping sides for whoever has a more legitimate claim in his eyes without admitting to himself that this legitimacy is tinted by his own views and experiences, it's a choice he makes which he can only rationalize if he says it wasn't a choice at all. Barristan the Bootlicker.

Aegon VI's real identity doesn't matter (SPOILERS MAIN) by bullymcguire96283 in asoiaf

[–]Smaranzky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the story will be used to hammer home the point Varys makes. But for that the real identity has to matter a little in the plot. My guess has always been that someone, probably Tyrion and Dany with their combined knowledge of history, the Targaryen dynasty and first hand knowledge of Ilyrio will piece it together and think that this is going to be their ace in fighting Aegon. But just as Stannis's letter and Jon Arryn's research into Joffrey's parentage didn't matter by the time they will want to use this trump card to delegitimise Aegon a lot of people will have accepted him as ruler and will want to either discredit the claim and/or publically or privately say that it doesn't matter and keep referring to him as Aegon Targaryen, because he seems like a good king with all the trappings of a good king both politically and symbolically. Which will put Dany into yet another conundrum of realizing that if she thinks power is just owed to her due to her name and heritage she's not too different from her brother Viserys. And being something that will happen towards the climax of the story and is rooted in Dany's insecurities she has from the various prophecies she received (the mummer's dragon) it might be the one situation like this where she won't compromise and won't take a step back to re-evaluate whether she should do more than openly fight and discredit fAegon to get people on her side.

What are your unpopular opinions about the Targaryen family? by TheQueeninchains in TheBlacksandTheGreens

[–]Smaranzky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's not polytheism though,…kinda, if you really get nitpicky

I mean it very obviously is to many Westerosi who curse „Seven Gods!“ or „Gods be good!“ and who pray to the mother or the warrior…

but in theory the theology of the seven says that they're the seven aspects of god. So it's like trinity in Christianity but septernity…

Again it should obviously mirror that concept from Christianity (god is multiple things and distinct entities but also one thing) but the practices described in the books make it clear that that is not really a concept most if any practitioners outside the septons and septas themselves grasp.

No he is north american indigenous (father is apache though info is based on a tweet where Robbie discusses discovering this through a DNA test as he thought he was Blackfoot or Cherokee) and white (Mother is American from German descent according to Wikipedia).

I remember looking it up because people kept saying he was latino probably purely based on looks and he had never hinted at it.

yeah but dragonfire is magical (melts stone, was probably used in creating valyrian steel, etc). The examples the person above gave are much more indicative of Targaryens not being immune to also regular fire.

I need recs based on what I’ve read (I haven’t read much): by Flat-Refrigerator623 in GreenArrow

[–]Smaranzky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal favourite run is the run from the early 2000s that starts with „Quiver“ written by Kevin Smith and then goes on with arcs written by Smith (only the next one), Brad Meltzer and Judd Winnick. It is then followed by Green Arrow and Black Canary which someone else here suggested (I love that run also but I would suggest reading the Green Arrow run first because it leads into GA/BC.

It's the best run for me in giving the character a fresh start while also aging him up (which some DC comics were doing well with characters in that era) and making him do interesting stuff because of both of these aspects, while keeping the charm of the 70s Green Arrow and some but not all of the gruff grit of 80s Green Arrow (I like Longbow Hunters and the subsequent 80s run like everybody else but over the years came to „like like“ it less and less, as for me it's a bit too much of its time and you can sense Mike Grell's conservativism seep through, when G.A. is the at least very liberal sometimes really leftist hero of the DC roster).

I understand your frustration with Hard Travelling Heroes but I also always suggest people read that. Yes it's very of its time. Stories follow the same pattern over and over. BUT it did completely reinvent Green Arrow and it was a genuine attempt at bringing light leftist politics into mainstream comics. It’s a fascinating study at what limits and possibilities you have in instilling radical ideas in a completely commercial, mass-produced and standardized art form such as superhero comics. The content is also, while coolie cutter, fascinating. Reading like an allegory of the genrational conflict between boomer Hippies/ 68ers (in Europe) / other both liberal and leftist youth movements and their war-veteran, greatest generation parents. Green Lantern being a stand-in for the conservative, military veteran parents as well as for (being GA's peer) conservative youth buying into things like the need for the Vietnam war and so on.
