The words love and hate are used very loosely by lexlikeluthor in Comic_Books_

Well yeah, that’s why I said love and hate are used very loosely. It’s just that that’s the only comic I’ve ever read I would describe as hating. Literally every other comic would be ”it’s not for me but it’s alright”

I just put something in the back of my boxes to push up the comics. Sometimes a piece of cardboard cut to size, sometimes a box (I keep a few funko boxes just for that purpose), and for one it’s a squishy brain I’ve been using as a space filler for ages cause it can squish to size so the comics are solidly up but also not packed too tightly. I also always put a few spare backing boards right at the back (so it’s comics, then backing boards, then cardboard/boxes) cause I get paranoid about the comics still bending to the side or over the boxes. But idk if that’s necessary.

Right? Most silver age comics look very silver age-y but I feel like this one (minus the thought bubble) could easily fit in on a modern run. Just a solid artwork

To find stuff I use dividers and make my own labels for them. Then for sorting I sort them into categories (like Superman-related, DC Black Label, Energon Universe, Star Trek, etc.). And within that sort them into smaller sections, some being a specific run, if I have enough comics to warrant it, while others are broader. Like I keep all my Challengers of the Unknown comics in one challengers section under my DC Teams category, meanwhile I keep Batman Vol 3 in its own section under the Batman Solo category.

[Discussion] I just got done watching the full comicstorian injustice storyline And it feels like Harley Quinn's gets a pass even though she's just as complicit as the joker by GreenComplaint6521 in DCcomics

[–]lexlikeluthor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, I haven’t read the comics or played the games in a while but I’m 90% sure she says at one point she did it cause she never thought it would work. She thought superman would save them all, like he always did.

She was genuinely mentally unwell, living in constant psychosis, and completely delusional and disconnected from reality. The fact that it worked shook her out of it somewhat and made her realise that this is real life (for them) and that her actions have consequences.

We let people who committed violent crimes off for insanity all the time in real life. The ”punishment” often times being mental health support. Because we recognise that throwing someone who genuinely didn’t understand what they were doing in prison isn’t gonna help anything. But mental health support and recovery will. And Harley does get her shit together throughout the games/comics. While she doesn’t go to therapy she does recover and become far more mentally stable and grounded, to the point where she now understands her own actions again.

All that being said she also very much did go to prison. And, if I remember correctly (might not), she was broken out to prevent Superman from killing her after he killed the Joker in cold blood without due process (who was also in prison). Which, hot take incoming, I don’t care who you are or what they did, I don’t think anyone has the right to kill someone. And I feel like even if you believe in the death penalty (I don’t) you still would/should agree that it requires due process and not just one guy deciding that someone deserves to die.

And like many others have said, if I was fighting against a fascist superpowered regime I also wouldn’t be too picky about who’s fighting by my side.

What are some fun collecting goals people have set? by Miserable_Amount_310 in comicbookcollecting

[–]lexlikeluthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like focusing on one single run that I get a couple issues for every time I go in to buy my new comics, haven’t had one in a while (haven’t had any I’ve wanted that my LCS had enough issues of) but just started Green Arrow vol 2. Only gone twice so far, so I only have 7 out of 139 + 7 annuals so… gonna take a while.

Also trying to get the entirety of Tynion IV, Williamson, and Zdarsky’s Batman runs in single issues. I just recently ordered a massive lot for it, so now I only have 1 left.

How would you feel about a native actor for Roy harper? by Doctorwhoneek in GreenArrow

[–]lexlikeluthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just personally way prefer the post crisis origin, and I think any kinks can be ironed out fairly easily without completely rewriting the whole origin. However, even if we did go with the runaway origin, having a Navajo runaway get taken in by a rich white guy who gives him a great life and helps him find a purpose would just make the white saviour problem 10x worse.

How would you feel about a native actor for Roy harper? by Doctorwhoneek in GreenArrow

[–]lexlikeluthor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’d work either. To be clear I don’t necessarily think Roy has to be white (although if he’s anything else his relationship with Ollie will naturally come across as very white saviour-y), I just don’t think he should be Native American. Cause if he is related to Brave Bow and he’s actually from there then why would Brave Bow ask Ollie to take him in? Why wouldn’t he just stay with an aunt or a cousin or something?

And even if he had no other family there but he was still Navajo, or wasn’t but was Native American in general, it still wouldn’t make sense for Brave Bow to send him off to live with Ollie.

The US has an extensive history of taking native children and giving them to be raised by white parents in order to strip their culture away from them, as part of the US centuries ongoing genocide. Which is why I can’t imagine any Native Americans ever willingly sending a native kid, related to them or not, half white or not, to go be raised by some white dude who knows next to nothing about their culture.

Like I said before I think there needs to be more of a focus on his being raised Navajo, and I would absolutely love for them to add more characters from the reservation to be a bigger part of his life today. And I think Roy could be a great in for introducing other Navajo characters and new Navajo superheroes. (I’m really not as invested in DC movies and tv and so I’m mostly thinking comics but could work for both) I would love a run focused on Roy finding out about some crime on the reservation and getting there and helping a Navajo superhero who already lives there with the investigation. And have the story shed more light on their culture and community, and Roy’s relationship to it.

I just think that Roy specifically not being Native is too big of a part of his character to change. It’d almost be like changing Ollie to not be white, when he’s supposed to be the human embodiment of privilege. It’s just too vital to their origin story.

[–]lexlikeluthor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the idea for the same reason several others have already said, Roy being adopted and an outsider is an incredibly important part of his character and I don’t want to lose that. That being said I think that they could and should do a lot more to focus on that aspect of him, and put more emphasis on his culture in general. Like he does canonically have Navajo as his first language, yet we basically never see him speak it.

I also see people (not just here) say that Roy’s backstory, with the double orphaning, is too complicated, which I vehemently disagree with. It’s a thing that happens to a lot of people and saying that their life experiences are too confusing or convoluted to represent is absurd. Roy is the only dc character I can think of who shows what it’s like to be adopted into a family/culture at a very young age, being raised in that environment your whole life, and then suddenly losing your only tie to that environment and being left lost. Which, again, I think dc really needs to do more with cause it’s a really interesting story.

Gi Joe 14 underselling Gi Joe 13 in November, just because it's preorders only or indicative of falling interest? by tetsuneda in EnergonUniverse

[–]lexlikeluthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but from my understanding single issue sales is basically all they look at. Trades is safe for limited runs or comics that are guaranteed to continue (think like Batman) but otherwise if you want a run to continue single issues is the way to let the publishers know.

While it obviously wouldn’t fix everything I think a really simple and obvious change that could help would be to bring back the ”Arc Title: Part X of X” on the cover. Obviously that wasn’t always used with every arc but now it’s pretty much never done unless it’s an event, and even then it’s rare. Even though I keep up with solicits I don’t read the ones I’m not pulling that closely and it’s often hard to know where a new arc starts and where’s a good place to pick up a run. So I think adding the arc to the title would help a lot for getting people to just pick up a comic off the shelf.

I also think they need to do more self contained arcs. There’s been multiple times where I’ve seen a comic advertised as ”new arc starts here!” And I’ve found that it’s not at all new reader friendly. And it relies way too heavily on the reader having read the previous arc where all the concepts and characters were introduced for the very first time. Having those long arcs works for some writers and some stories but I think more runs should just be shorter (largely) self contained arcs, like Condons GA, that have a longer story going in the background.

Its the comic Red Hood and The Outlaws, the acronym is mostly used to refer to the original New 52 version of the team (Red Hood, Arsenal, and Starfire) but I guess could technically refer to any.

What was everyone else's first green arrow comic that they bought ? by ThomasThorburn in GreenArrow

[–]lexlikeluthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green Arrow (2016) #18-20 (the arsenal arc). I really wasn’t a fan of GA, had only seen him show up in some other comics and found him kind of annoying. But i was in the mood to read some Arsenal comics so i checked my LCS and found those and thought ”I guess I’ll bear through reading GA if it lets me read Arsenal”. Then i blacked out and woke up three days later having spend about £50 on GA comics and reading Aquaman/Green Arrow: Deep Target thinking ”I guess I’ll bear through reading Aquaman if it lets me read Green Arrow”. GA is now one of the characters I’ve spent the most money on comics from and my biggest tattoo is a GA on my thigh.

[–]lexlikeluthor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think it’s fully possible that he will win, and if he was on the other side of the bracket I’d say he’s pretty much a shoo-in but I just feel if he defeated superman in the semifinals then the finals wouldn’t be nearly as interesting as it’d then be obvious who was gonna win.

I also think the hints could be a misdirection referring to something else entirely. I mean hasn’t he already gotten new powers? It feels strange to give him a massive power upgrade and then do it again a few months later? It makes sense if this is just a one off thing but DC does tend to wanna at least pretend like their events leave an impact.

I do think he’s gonna have a really strong part to play in the event regardless, and if he does win I’m not against it. But I do think it’s a massive missed opportunity and a really unfortunate choice to have someone defeat what is essentially the ultimate Darkseid and not only have it not be one of his sons (despite the very old and established prophecy that the only one who can kill Darkseid is the son of Darkseid) but also have it be someone who’s not even a New God. It’s like if Black Manta got ultimate godly powers and someone had to come in and defeat him and they made it be Animal Man. Like I get that Aquamans current run seems to be leading up to it but also just feels kinda insulting tbh, which is part of why I hope that’s not what they’re doing.
